C loudy with a hint of drizzle early.  5 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SW at 2 to 3kts and the sea surface stayed smooth most of the morning.  The air temp was 59.9º and the posted water temp is 61.0º, but according to Dallas Raines, there's an upwelling that dropping the inshore temps.  We're calling it 58º and not a degree more.  Low tide at 10:55am +0.3' and high tide follows at 5:48pm +4.9'.  It's a SSW swell out of 209º at 2.6' and it was 3' and a little lined up.  Water quality looks suspect and there's some lingering red tide... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Turnaround Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W hen Donnie says "Go", you go!  Smooth to start out and then some texture, but the big news is that Doc is back and was ripping.  Looks like he and the Professor will be the same age for a few months here... S o it's 9 miles visibility under cloudy overcast skies.  Winds were onshore 1 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth to lightly textured.  The air was 58.3º and the water says 60.8º but the consensus was more like 58º.  Anytime it wants to warm up!  Low tide at 10:03am +0.0' and high tide follows at 5:10pm +4.4'.  It's a WSW swell out of 255º at 3.0' and that's what we'll call it, with some hip high zippers making for some tight rights. I f you've never had breakfast at the Castle on PCH in Manhattan, then we can't help you.  These folks (#1) gathered to celebrate Sancho's special day and to pretend they'd never been here before.  At one point Ed called it "Trader Joe's", which immediately m...

T-Bar Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he Professor is looking a bit bewildered this morning after he discovered this patch of snow in the parking lot next to Brother's.  No the lifts weren't running and his skis are in Idaho.  Maybe there will be a change in the weather now that it's got that out of it's system... C loudy this morning and 5 miles visibility.  The wind was up, blowing 4 to 6kts and the sea was sporting a fair amount of texture.  The air was 58.8º and the water claims to be 59.0º, but we're not sure about that.  Low tide was at 8:12am -0.5' and high tide fills in the blanks at 3:38pm +3.5'.  It's a west swell out of 261º at 2.6' and it was a morning sick 2', green and mushy. I n a week we'll be in gay Paree, searching for the tidal bore of the river Seine.  We're not sure if it's been surfed, but we'll check it out ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Nicola Tesla Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co… Thank you, we're back... What is it about electricity?  Ours went out and we've been computerless for three days.  But it only went out in certain spots, one of them running the Wi-Fi, internet and computer.  Not to mention the sprinkler system, the heater and the tunes.  Good news, the fridge and the garage door are still running.  The electrician says it looks like a short, but we're thinking it could be a long… As in the electrons are looking for another path but it's too long to make all the aforementioned stuff work… Nicola would be proud… The ocean looks like chocolate or actually more like Yoo-Hoo™ chocolate drink.  Red tide.  10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Wind were out of the NW by 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was ruggedly textured.  The air was 53.6º and the water was 57.2º despite the 64º reading on the Lifeguard board.  High tide was at 9:16am +3.6' and low tide will be at 2:08pm +...

Lost Boys & Co... F ound these cool sweatshirts (#1) at Spyder on the Plaza.  They show all of the cool South Bay surf spots and wave magnets.  We managed to get these cool women to show off the threads... H eavy overcast and not quite 7 miles visibility.  Winds were onshore by 2 to 4kts and the surface was generously textured.  The air was 58.5º and the water is 58.5º.  Overcast, windy and chilly, this isn't sounding great is it?  Low tide is at 11:46am +0.6' and high tide follows late at 6:44pm +4.3'.  It's a SSW swell out of 212º at 2.3' and that's about how big it was with a few fatter outsides. F or those of you who knew Brian Sullivan his funeral will be held at St. Lawrence Church at 1pm on Saturday.  Still can't quite believe he's gone... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

El Rayo X Vision Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I t's common knowledge that shapers have extraordinary vision.  But did you know that many of them have strict exercise regimens that allow them to refine their visual acuity!  Yes!  We happened to stumble upon our sobrino José (#1) in the midst of his ocular gymnastics.  We now understand that you have to trade eyes with the chocolate and old fashioned every 15 seconds to get the maximum effect.  Eyes like an eagle that boy!  And did you know that Barahona means eagle?  Look it up... O vercast again this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.5º and the water is 59.0º.  Low tide was late at 10:01am +0.2' and high tide will be at 5:44pm +3.8'.  It's a SSW swell out of 202º at 2.6' and it was a prim 2' and great for a paddle... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Cada Macaco No Seu Galho Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... " C ada Macaco No Seu Galho ," means "Every Monkey On Its Own Branch."  Apropos of nothing, it basically means everyone should mind their own business.  Maybe it's easier in Portuguese, but we're sure it's not... C older than #%*$ this morning even though the temperature read 58.0º and the water was 59.4º.  A slight mist early and then a heavy overcast.  Winds were out of the SW by 3 to 6kts and the sea surface was textured.  Low tide was at 8:54am -0.1' and high tide is this afternoon at 4:51pm +3.5'.  It's a SSW swell out of 210º at 3.3' and it was a knocked down 2' to 3' and gray.  The kids made it look good, but not good enough to follow them in... T hey're dredging the harbor and this crane (#1) is taking the sand and depositing it on a barge that goes who-knows-where.  Soon there won't be an island on the west side of the harbor.  It was always a great place to grind your SUP to a halt... ✠ ...

The De-calcification Of The Pineal Gland Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I t's hard to get past Descartes believing that the pineal gland had mystical purposes.  Even though it was finally identified as a neuroendocrine organ, that seems to really mean the same thing, right?  René did believe it was the seat of the soul, but how do you get all that soul into a gland that size?  Lots of questions, but it remains, keep up the blood flow and make sure you regularly de-calcify that puppy... W hen Morgan says, "Surf right in front of the 10th St. tower!" you'd better be prepared to do that.  It was overcast and 5 miles visibility with side shore winds from the south at 3 to 5kts.  The surface was lightly textured.  The air temp was 60.0º and the water was 57.6º at go-out.  The good news is that it's creeping to 60º-61º during mid-day.  Let's see if we can string a few sunny days together.  Low tide was at 5:04am -1.4' and high tide follows at 11:36am +3.7'.  It's a 3.0' SW swell out of 220º a...

Expanded Reality Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e'll play our own version of spin the globe today.  We did a little island hopping and this little gem is about an half an hour from another another one of our favorite rocks.  Not often considered a surf destination we found a few spots that looked good and we were kicking ourselves for not bringing boards! P artly cloudy this morning with ten miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore at 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 54.3º and the water is 57.0º.  It actually seemed warmer today, we're either getting inured to the cold, which is HIGHLY unlikely, or it's really trying.  High tide is at 10:41am +4.0' and low tide will be at 3:35pm +1.5'.  It's a SSW swell out of 192º at 3.6' and it translated to 3' to 4' and a little soft on the inside, but fun and not as cold as it's been. G ot your guesses in?  This is a shot of the south end of Molokai and there are actually a couple of spots that ...

Seahunt Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Here we are at CVS, no wait… This is Nicaragua and this is our hero Brendan Simmons with the beer receipt from his latest trip to the bodega.  You can tell his colleagues are impressed and quite frankly so are we…. Those hot offshores do work up quite a thirst! Meanwhile here we are in the South Bay trying to figure out how to dry our morning newspaper after it got dowsed by the sprinklers.  A first world problem, sorry…. Sunny and bright though still a bit of chill in the air at 55.0, with the ocean as uncooperative as ever at 56.3.  High tide is at 9:43am +4.3' and low tide stretches out at 3:00pm +1.1'.  It's a SSW swell out of 202 degrees at 3.9' and the surf is a bit textured and 3' to 4'. Maybe mañana if we can shake this cold…  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

We Missed Cinco de Drinko Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e missed all the fun Surf & Culture Report headings this month since "May the Fourth Be With You" and "Cinco de Drinko" fell on the weekend.  We're telling you this so you can appreciate how hard we're working here...  Also you can't imagine how many words we misspell every morning.  If it weren't for spell check we'd look like failing third graders... H azy sun this morning, but the offshores are strong and consistent 5 to 7kts.  The air temperature is 56.0º and the water isn't much better at 56.8º, driven down by those wind yesterday.  High tide at 8:53am +4.5' and low tide will be at 2:25pm +0.7'.  It's a west swell out of 265º at 3.9'.  So it's 3' to 5' and pretty good. Sometimes On Saturday Film Review Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Surf was 2' to 3' under overcast skies yesterday and if you were patient there were a few good ones coming through.  In the afternoon we headed down to Dana Point / Doheny for the Dana Point Film Festival.  It runs May 2-5 and you can look them up at danapointfilm.com. We got a chance to see Anna Wilder Burns and Jordyn Romero's new film "Beyond Normal" at it's California debut.   It's the story of Becca Speak, pro-surfer who thrice suffered traumatic brain injuries.  She had a couple of serious concussions culminating with hitting the bottom of the wave pool at Waco, Texas.  She lost the ability to speak and absolutely couldn't surf.  The film chronicles her road to recovery and in essence what it means to be "normal." A great short film, it's masterfully shot and edited and reveals to the viewer just how fragile our lives and surfing careers can be.  It's got one more showing at Dana Point and we'll let you...

Things Are Closer Than They Appear Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W hen you're ready for your burrito nothing like a mere-shmere screen is going to get in your way.  But honestly staring at Yoshi while he's making your "Soul Surfer with pinto and bacon" isn't going to make it go faster.  Of course unless you look up and see the puppy looking so forlorn... that works as long as you're not Kristi Noem... T hen of course the surf this morning was a bit smaller than yesterday.  It was 7 miles visibility under overcast skies with a lively south wind blowing out of 180º.  A bit of texture on the surface.  The air was 57.3º and felt like 48º, according to our mayor (like he should know), and the water at the buoy is 59.4º which would be wonderful if it were true.  Still feels like 58.  Low tide is at 11:50am -0.2'.  A west swell out of 272º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3'. O f course we have our favorite director Anna Burns showing two of her films at the Dana Point Film Festival.  On Friday she...

Lost Boys & Co... O nly a few scattered clouds this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the air was 58.5º and the water was 58.8º.  Low tide was at 10:58am -0.2'.  It's a west swell out of 281º at 3.9' and it kinda surprised folks running 3' to 5' and solid outsides. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
