Thoughtful Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W atch out who you hang out with in high school because you might find yourself skiing with them like 50 years later.  Yeah, it's Tim, Frank and Brian up at Brundage causing problems wherever they go.  To their credit they did help those folks who ran off the road, but everyone else would say something like, "Oh you guys again…" B eautiful morning in the South Bay, with good visibility under a hazy sun.  Winds are out of the west by 1 to 2kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air is 59.6 º and the water is 59.9 º.  With a little sun we might see it hit 60 again.  High tide early at 4:34am +5.3' and low tide follows at 12:27pm -0.8'.  There's a west swell out of 261 º at 3.0'and it's 3' to 4' and could be a fine day to exercise your chops. O ur sympathies to Clarke who lost his sister this week.  He needs a hug!   "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Wrecking Crew Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...   S o, we'd had a good day skidding around the slopes and we were feeling pretty saucy when we came around this corner and saw this car that had launched itself over the edge of the road and was trying to bend to gravity and roll the recast of the ay down the embankment.  We spun around and leaped out offering our assistance.  Now Herkimer, shown here (#1) standing in the doorway was dead set on going down with the ship.  The Professor suggested he get out of the vehicle and he responded by saying "Says who?!"  The Professor said, "Okay jump in the car and get on with your own bad self!" Along with Herkimer was his girlfriend Bambi, two dogs and their ward, 4 year old Louis.  Shortly the fire department showed up and we took our leave, but we left them pretty disoriented and a bit wacked.   Turns out Herky had passed out, gone across the road and blew over the edge.  Better have that checked Herk… M eanwhile at home it was ha...

Impossible Major Appliances Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I s an air conditioner considered a major appliance? L ooked like an excellent day in the South Bay this morning.  Lola on the other hand was getting off the mountain (#1)after shusbooming down the mountain and  keeping up wid  da boys.  Low was 54.5 and it was about 57 at checkout.  The water was 58.6 and let's hope a little sunshine brings it back up to the 60.0 mark.  Low tide was at 8:17am +0.62' and high tide was at 2:39pm +2.46' which is a mere bump.  It's a west swell out of 275 at 2.3'.  Ankle biters my dear Watson… Snow mañana, so we'll be keeping track of the weather and let you know how the rest of the world winters! Tomorrow Land Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... O nce again we have ventured the frozen or semi-frozen north to do some sliding around on the snow.  But the surf still calls and here's what we gleaned from our mostly reliable sources on the ground. S even miles visibility under cloudy skies with some evidence of rain.  Winds are onshore, scheduled to get fierce during the day, 7 to 10th at checkout.  The air temp was 48.0 and the water is 60.4.  High tide was at 9:55am +5.2' and low tide follows at 4:19pm -0.2'.  It's a west swell out of 272 at 5.6' and that translates to 6 to 8' and trying to find organization among the chaos… B ack to curling before it disappears for four years. Big & Wild Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y esterday...  Yesterday might have been the best day we've ever seen at the Avenues.  Not the biggest, mind you, but absolutely the best consistent shape we've ever seen.  It immediately brought to mind Puerto Escondido and the tubing shorebreak that it's famous for.  (#1.) Was Second Pole Burnout and there were probably 15 guys out.  Despite the horrid water quality there were just some folks who couldn't let it go... T hat was  yesterday.   Today, after a night of winds sometimes reaching almost 50mph, the ocean is stormy and wild.  The good news is that it's chewing up the beach at a rapid rate, scalloping the berm (#2) and you could almost see some of the sand bars it was creating.  Despite the wind the air temperature was 51.0 º  and the water is 60.8 º .  High tide was at 9:16am +5.7' and low tide will be at 3:53pm -0.6'.  It's a 11.2' west swell out of 274 º  and who knows how big some of...

Rain On A Sunny Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I f you were quick you might have seen this rainbow during a break in the rain yesterday. T en miles visibility this morning and despite the clouds, the air is crystal clear.  Winds are light offshore, west at 98 º .  The air temperature is 49.0 º  and the water is 61.2 º .  High tide is at 8:41am +5.9' and low tide will be at 3:28pm -0.8' (there have been some spectacular minus tides this last month.  Consider a beach walk when it's not raining.)  It's a SW swell out of 222 º  at 5.6' and it's a chunky 5' to 7' and full of all kinds of interesting detritus.  Spin the wheel and take your chances. T he Professor (#2) taking a chance on the #2 Corona Door. T his (#3) is what happens when you brain storm an idea and it's as good as the design that made it to the shirt.  Okay, it was  inside  the shirt.  We still want to make one of these. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Another Rainy Day & Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... N o, we weren't going to get out of the bus to check out the surf.  We could see it perfectly fine from here (#1). R ain, heavy at times, cutting down visibility to less than a mile at times.  Winds were blowing from all points depending on your location 7 to 17kts.  The sea surface is white capped.  The air temperature was 54.0 º  and the water is still 61.7 º , despite the wind and rain.  High tide was at 8:06am +5.9' and low tide will be at 3:03pm -0.9'.  It's mainly a WSW swell out of 247 º  at 4.3' building throughout the day.  Currently the waves are in the 4' to 7' range and wild and bumpy. L ast week we had a number of minus tides in the afternoon.  Took this pic of a flock of Royal Terns (#2).   In California, more common in winter than in summer. Some southward migration occurs, as the species reaches Ecuador and Argentina in winter.   They seem to be attracted to the low tides.  We...
