Big & Wild Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y esterday...  Yesterday might have been the best day we've ever seen at the Avenues.  Not the biggest, mind you, but absolutely the best consistent shape we've ever seen.  It immediately brought to mind Puerto Escondido and the tubing shorebreak that it's famous for.  (#1.) Was Second Pole Burnout and there were probably 15 guys out.  Despite the horrid water quality there were just some folks who couldn't let it go... T hat was  yesterday.   Today, after a night of winds sometimes reaching almost 50mph, the ocean is stormy and wild.  The good news is that it's chewing up the beach at a rapid rate, scalloping the berm (#2) and you could almost see some of the sand bars it was creating.  Despite the wind the air temperature was 51.0 º  and the water is 60.8 º .  High tide was at 9:16am +5.7' and low tide will be at 3:53pm -0.6'.  It's a 11.2' west swell out of 274 º  and who knows how big some of...

Rain On A Sunny Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I f you were quick you might have seen this rainbow during a break in the rain yesterday. T en miles visibility this morning and despite the clouds, the air is crystal clear.  Winds are light offshore, west at 98 º .  The air temperature is 49.0 º  and the water is 61.2 º .  High tide is at 8:41am +5.9' and low tide will be at 3:28pm -0.8' (there have been some spectacular minus tides this last month.  Consider a beach walk when it's not raining.)  It's a SW swell out of 222 º  at 5.6' and it's a chunky 5' to 7' and full of all kinds of interesting detritus.  Spin the wheel and take your chances. T he Professor (#2) taking a chance on the #2 Corona Door. T his (#3) is what happens when you brain storm an idea and it's as good as the design that made it to the shirt.  Okay, it was  inside  the shirt.  We still want to make one of these. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Another Rainy Day & Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... N o, we weren't going to get out of the bus to check out the surf.  We could see it perfectly fine from here (#1). R ain, heavy at times, cutting down visibility to less than a mile at times.  Winds were blowing from all points depending on your location 7 to 17kts.  The sea surface is white capped.  The air temperature was 54.0 º  and the water is still 61.7 º , despite the wind and rain.  High tide was at 8:06am +5.9' and low tide will be at 3:03pm -0.9'.  It's mainly a WSW swell out of 247 º  at 4.3' building throughout the day.  Currently the waves are in the 4' to 7' range and wild and bumpy. L ast week we had a number of minus tides in the afternoon.  Took this pic of a flock of Royal Terns (#2).   In California, more common in winter than in summer. Some southward migration occurs, as the species reaches Ecuador and Argentina in winter.   They seem to be attracted to the low tides.  We...

Modern Love Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y eah well, it's Friday the 13th and we thought we'd look into the future and see what Valentine's Day might look like in 2053 (#1).  He said, "I was attracted by her Gucci helmet."  Who knew that would still be a thing! M eanwhile back on the beach, it was sunny and clear and the winds were blowing offshore.  The air was a chilly 50.0 º  but the water is STILL 62.1 º!  High tide was at 6:19am +5.2' and low tide followed at 1:44pm -0.5'.  On a west swell out of 259 º at 3.6' it was 4' to 5' in the surf and by all accounts Doc "Big Drop" Scale was the standout.  Here (#2 photo, courtesy MoMo Pier Action Photography ) he narrowly misses eviscerating the young Stutzman as he tucks into the tube.  And the tube wasn't even the best part!  On a late takeoff, he leapt into the elevator drop and made a turn that would have made Dewey proud.  Yowzah! S o Capitan Donaldo is saying get your surfing in before the big win...

Thurlow Spurr & The Spurrlows Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W hen we were in high school early in the Pleistocene Era the administration thought we needed uplifting examples of culture.  Likewise if these examples were thinly disguised religious groups, better yet.  Thurlow Spurr was a musical minister, who also represented various industrial corporations.  He represented Chrysler and toured the country flogging Darts, Furys, Imperials and yes, the Barracuda.  At least we got out of class for an hour and it inspired us to buy Fords and Chevy's... C hilly this morning at 48.3 º  with clear skies.  Winds were variable offshore at 3 to 7kts, with rolling smooth seas.  The ocean temp is holding at 62.1 º .  High tide was at 5:33am +4.9' and low tide follows at 1:16pm -0.2'.  It's a WSW swell out of 254 º  at 4.3' and it was 4' to 5' with some bigger outsides... S ome great waves by Chris, Christian, Brendan and Hans in rather trying conditions for longboarders.  Doc made a ...

Little Man Who Wasn't There Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... "L ast night I saw upon the stair, a little man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today,  my God I wish he'd go away! I f you look closely at photo #1, you'll see the buoy in the left upper third.  We had watched a catchable wave break within a few feet of the buoy, took out our camera-phone and as long as we had our phone out it didn't break that far out - until we put our phone away... C loudy with 7 miles visibility, but no rain after last nights showers.  Winds out of the WSW at 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was churning.  The air was 55,0 º  and the water is still, a remarkable 62.1 º .  One low tide at 12:41pm +0.2'.  The buoy is reading a 8.2' WSW swell out of 253 º .  It's breaking 8' to 10' with some waves sucking out below sand bar level and the odd spitter reeling down the beach. D own the street you could see Topaz and Sapphire (#2) a bit better organized than Hermosa.  Interesting to note how far the ...

Trtistiloquent Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... C loudy out there this morning as we gaze down the beach at Sapphire and Topaz , in that order (#1).  Maybe 10 miles visibility and the winds were offshore by 1 to 3kts.  The sea surface was sporting some texture.  The air temperature at checkout was 58.9 º  and the water is 62.4 º .  One low tide today at 11:53am +0.4'.  It's a west swell out of 270 º  at 4.6' and it's 5' to 7' in the water and showing some wild rips north and south of the pier. W hen most people get an idea, they have a light bulb.  A-aron gets an entire sun (#2)!   ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
