That’s What He Said Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... When spoken properly Scottish is unintelligible to the American English ear.  A good example would be the Robert Buns quote, “Facts are chiels that winna ding, And daurna be disputed.”  So we liked this quote because it mentioned “dings”, but other than that we have no good idea what it means.  But we’ll let you parse out, “That snod’s faith gone, but the steeple aye thirsts frae the hairt o the toon.” We’re looking at 14 miles visibility under hazy skies.  It was 63.0 at checkout and the high is going t be right around 71.5.  The water is 69.6 degrees at the buoy.  Low tide was at 6:00am -0.4’ and high tide follows at 12:45pm +3.6’.  Winds are light out of the west and the sea surface is smooth.  It’s a south swell out of 187 degrees at 2.6’ and it’s almost that on the beach.  The local harbor in Portree is a colorful collection of shops and ...

We’re Not Going To Buy A Kilt Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... One of the things we’ve been following since we hit the road has been the World Cup.  To say people here take it seriously would be an understatement of epic proportions.  We’ve managed to see games in a number of pubs and no matter who is playing everyone has their favorite team.  Unfortunately Scotland got eliminated and Ireland didn’t make it in, so everyone is picking their next fave.  We, of course, are rooting for Portugal, so we’re holding on! As we crossed over to the Isle of Skye, the wind stopped and the firth got mirror smooth (#1).  It only lasted a few minutes and then the wind came up along with the rain.  On the changing tide there are supposed to be rapids and a standing wave near this spot under a bridge.  In Hermosa this morning the tide is low at 5:28am -0.6’ and high tide will be at 12:15pm +3.5’.  Winds are light out of the west and the sea surfac...

Bonnie Banks Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a trio of ducks carving some perfect V’s from the pier at Loch Lomond (#1).  All we knew about Loch Lomond was the “Bonnie Banks” ditty.  Turns out it’s the largest inland stretch of water in Great Britain.  It has 22 islands and the main city of Luss is the jumping off point for the highlands. M eanwhile in the South Bay we have 12 miles visibility under mostly cloudy skies.  The low today is 61.5 and the high will be 69.5.  It’s a minus tide early at 4:57am -0.6’ and high tide will be at 11:46am 3.4’.  It’s a south swell out of 191 deg at 3.6’ and the surf is 2’ to 3’ and the wind should hold off for most of the morning… T ook a turn through part of the Scottish rainforest (#2).  An amazing diversity of mosses, ferns and lichens fed by high rainfall and relatively mild temperatures year round.  Also known as a Celtic rainforest, it is relativ...

Row, Row, Row Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Reporting from the Scottish Lowlands, we find ourselves on Edinburgh Bay, watching the fog roll in from the top of the Royal Mile.  The weather has been absolutely balmy with temps reaching almost 80 degrees!  The folks here are going nuts, while it feels like home to us.  Glad we brought shorts!   Our friend and contributor Soraya Simi just released her documentary called Row of Life.  Here’s the synopsis:   Row of Life” follows renowned ocean rower, Marine Corps veteran, 3x Paralympian, and 14x Guinness World Record holder Angela Madsen. In 2020, Angela attempted to row solo and unassisted across the Pacific Ocean, from Los Angeles to Hawaii. What unfolds is a harrowing story of her determination, resilience, and immense courage to pursue the unknown, and the unyielding support of Angela’s wife, Deb, who, separate...

From Maine To California Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y es!  From Maine to California there is unfettered jubilation at the announcement of the engagement of our own Anna Burns and Chris Miller.  Was there a question of what her answer would be?  Not if you consider they’re both goofy foots, have curly hair and were D-1 athletes.  No news yet on when the wedding will take place although it is pretty certain it will be on the right coast and there will be considerable trekking to the nuptials.  We will keep you abreast of the details… Meanwhile, we can’t get our current font to get off BOLD, so just imagine we’re yelling so you can hear us 5,000 miles away.  It’s a 2.6’ SSW swell out of 204 deg true at 17 second intervals.  The temperature at the buoy is 63.3F and it seems like things are taking their good time to wam up.  Winds are currently calming and high tide will be at 5:46am 3.0’ and low tide will be at 10:57am 1.7’. Lost Boys & Co... W indy and cool here on the west coast of Ireland.  The tide was low, considering there was a 4’ difference in the tide, the flats were extensive stretching for miles.  It looked like you could walk out a couple of hundred yards and still touch.  The Professor (#1) was checking out this shop in Dingle, but later between Dingle and the Cliffs of Moher we found another shop and the thickest rubber we found so far (#2).  The salesgirl told us they used to carry full 7’s, but hey were too cumbersome and people complained!  The water here is considered warm this year and it’s 57!  That’s winter for us!  Buoy temp today was 63.3.  Hermosa has a SSW swell out of 194deg at 3’ and it was just about that… W e’ll try and send some shots of the beach and the cliffs tomorrow! Lost Boys & Co... D isappointed that the motion videos were too large to send. But you might get the sense of things by this photo of Cathy with this Harris Hawk.  It was amazing to watch them in flight and we got to be “falconers” for a brief moment! L ow was 62.2, but supposed to get to 70 mid-day.  Hazy with 5 miles visibility and pretty humid.  The water is 64.8 at the buoy and reading 66 on the beach.  It’s still a swell from the SW 218deg at 4.9’ and it’s still a bit oblique for Hermosa… O n to Tralee and the Dingle peninsula and a look at the Irish Sea! The Court Of King Caractacus Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e caught Randy (#1) taking a break in front of the factory.  What you have to realize is that the pants he's wearing have about an inch of resin built up in some places.  He has to get new pants periodically because he ends up not being able to bend his legs to get up or sit down!  These are almost ready to be retired... V isibility was right around 15 miles on this beautiful sunny day.  Winds were calm and picked up through the morning.  By the time we got out it was a tad choppy.  The air temperature at checkout was 63.8 º  and the water is 66.7 º .  High tide was early at 6:08am +3.3' and low tide will be at 11:26am +1.4'.  There's a strong SSW swell out of 199 º  at 3.9' and it was 3' to 4'.  O ne of the special things about coaching is that when you get a student who is really interested in shaping and the process of making a ...
