A Tomatina Wednesday Surf & Culture Report
Lost Boys & Co...
An unbelievable day, even by Sruf Familia standards! In photo #1 we have Sancho fortifying himself for the Tomatina. If one cerveza was good, two had to be better. Look, it was a long walk and you needed to stay hydrated. At 12 o’clock sharp the festivities began as six dump trucks cam down the Camino about a block apart throwing thousands of tomatoes into, onto and through the crowd. It looked like the start of the Super Bowl 10k with nowhere to run and tomatoes flying everywhere. By the time the second truck came through the street was wall to wall tomatoes and the air was thick with tomato mist. At truck #3 the road was ankle deep in tomato sauce and the playing field became a bit uneven since you couldn’t see the curbs. We held our positions…
Hermosa is in for a hot one today! Should be a skosh over 80 in the air and 76.5 in the water. 12 miles visibility and winds are out of the west, 1 to 3kts. High tide was at 9:49am +4.2’ and low tide will be at 2:52pm 2.0’. It’s mostly a south swell out of 176deg at 3.9’ and it’s turning the corner enough to give us some corners if you’re wiling to look…
Meanwhile, in Bunol, it’s gotten deeper and more frantic. The Professor backed into a corner (#2) was practicing his red ball slider. He had his hand back to catch an errant nightshade so he could send it back at twice the pace, but it slipped out and he got dunked with a half a gallon of gazpacho. Everyone was basically unrecognizable at this point so you just aimed at the most open target. If you fell, you were soup. Then at exactly 1pm they shot off a cannon and everyone dropped their ammo. People in the apartments above were spraying the combatants with hoses so by the time we made it to the top of the plaza we looked like #3. We had to catch a train so we did our best surfer street change and galloped to the station. It was hilarious… More later…
