Didn't See It Coming Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o our fave photog Kevin Gilligan was on the scene on Sunday for this year's "Spooky Surf."  With years of chasing down action sports he was right on the scene to chronicle Doc Scale auguring into this unsuspecting citizen (#1) south of the pier.  Of course south of the pier is a "no fault" surfing zone.  Now, to the unpracticed eye it appears that Doc took off right into this guy, but what you can't see is that NO ONE SHOULD TAKE OFF WHEN DOC IS PADDLING!  His intense concentration, Olympic paddling style and lack of peripheral vision should deter even the most enthusiastic surfer from taking off within 50'.  This guy felt Doc's wrath!  For more action go to "Photos KAG"! A fter fun surf all weekend things died down today.  A beautiful morning with 20+ miles visibility under cloudless skies.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smoothly brushed.  The air was a chillin' 48.8º and the water dro...

Lost Boys & Co... Y esterday's "Kickoff Classic" was held in some pretty miserable conditions, certainly not unheard of in the contest realm.  Small, windy and inconsistent the Women's Shortboard Division did a great job of making it look almost good.  Redondo had a great showing placing 2 women in the finals.  10ths of a point separated many of the contestants.  Here's how they fared: Round 1: 1st: Karis Bruno 1st: Keani Honda-Snow 2nd: Abby Bosse 3rd: Ryan Jurgens 3rd: Umi Morimoto Quarterfinals: 2nd: Karis Bruno 2nd: Keani Honda-Snow 3rd: Ryan Jurgens 3rd: Abby Bosse Semifinals: 1st: Karis Bruno 3rd: Keani Honda-Snow E xpecting the worst, we gathered at the water's edge this morning only to be greeted by small, but imminently surfable waves.  (#1.)  Winds were offshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Mostly sunny skies and 10+ miles visibility.  The air wa...

At Long Last Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A fter a long drought of Hermosa breaking on the sand and doing nothing but clobbering the shorebreak, it looks like a couple of the sandbars have retreated to the outside and are ready to provide some waves that aren't catastrophes waiting to happen.  The RUHS team had a great session (#1) in preparation for tomorrow's "Kickoff Classic".  It's one of the biggest contests on the coast with a couple of hundred participants.  Thursday's heats will feature the women, so if you want to catch some excellent girl's surfing, come down to Hermosa.  The contest starts at 6:30 and goes until about 8:30am. C loudy this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were 3 to 5kts offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.1º and the water is 65.7º.  High tide was at 7:40am +5.4' and low tide was at 1:34pm +1.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 195º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' with some well shaped zippers reeli...

Now We Can Get Ready For Halloween Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O kay, at last we're ready to start considering Halloween.  Never you mind that stuff started appearing in the stores right after Labor Day, or that the costume closets have been vibrating for a month.  Nope, now it's time to start carving some pumpkins, breaking out the Dracula teeth and cape and waxing-up for "Spooky Surf."  We saw this ride (#1) in Kapolei a week ago in Hawaii.  There were skeletons on the front fenders as well... T alk about spooky surf!  This morning at 5:30am it was drizzling, verging on rain, with the wind blowing out of the west by 16kts.  By 7am it was blowing offshore, the bumps were calming down and Sapphire had 30 people out.  The air temperature was 61.2º and the water is 65.7º, driven down a notch by the winds.  High tide was at 6:50am +4.4' and low tide was at 11:48am +2.8' setting us up for some minus tides at the end of the week.  A west swell out of 265º at 5.2' and it was 4' to 5' with...

Frightful Texture Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... 1.)  A s much texture as you could possibly want this morning as the Redondo Team ran heats and braved the double-ups on the inside.  Despite the deteriorating conditions the team got some good waves and made it look almost rideable!  Cloudy though and 2 miles visibility.  Winds were onshore and increased throughout the day.  At checkout the air was 63.5º and the water is 66.9º.  Basically one tide today at 12:42pm +5.3'.  It's a windblown WSW swell out of 245º at 4.9' and it was 4' to 6' early and then backed off through the tide...  Check it mañana! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Widening Gyre Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... 1.)  H ere we have the surge threatening to engulf the bikepath at "Burnout."  Flowing back up the outfall the high tide was cresting all along the shore from the Pier to Torrance Beach.  This, in our humble opinion, is a good thing.  Looks like tons of sand being washed out to sea to replenish the diminishing sandbars that have plagued us all summer (summer?) long.  Let's see what happens! F oggies, dense this morning with sometimes less than 100yds visibility.  Winds were light on, from 12 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 64.4º and the water is 67.6º.  An early low tide at 4:50am +2.8', leading into the reported high tide at 11:46am +5.6'.  It's a WSW swell out of 250º at 3.6' and there were some 4' to 6' thrashers pounding Hermosa, while other spots flooded out on the tide.  Should be interesting mañana... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
