Ham Sandwich Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... "Sometimes he's up there on the nose for so long you can just imagine he could eat a ham sandwich and just keep riding all day."   Bruce Brown talking about Lance Carson at Malibu, while we're talking about Christian Stutzcanhang at Tlayuda Point...  Yep, there were some good ones!  And everyone seemed to have a moment, including Doc, who managed to discuss wave etiquette in Swedish, Spanish, Danish, Israeli, French and English. Here in the South Bay we had cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the south from the start at 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was a bit textured.  The air temp was 58º and the water refusing to hit 60 stalled at 59.7º.  Low tide was at 5:53am +1.1' and high tide follows at 11:36am +3.2'.  It's a SSW swell out of 200º true at 2.3' and it was 2' and weak... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

The Lost Island Of Santosha Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o, we ran across this rare view from the jetty (#1) of the Santosha drag strip.  By the way do you know the difference between a groin and a jetty?  A groin is a medium sized structure built perpendicular to the shoreline.  They are not built to create any kind of harbor and are typically used to effect wave energy patterns and sand movement.  The rocks at Topaz are a groin, not a jetty.  A jetty is usually longer and narrower than a groin and is typically built on both sides of a rivermouth or inlet.  Seal Beach is a good example of jetties. T here's 10 miles visibility under lightly clouded skies.  Winds were zephyr like at 1kt and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 48.3º and the water is 59.4º.  High tide was at 10:53am +3.8' and low tide is at 4:46pm +1.1'.  We have a SW swell out of 224º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' as the tide took it's toll early. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Pro...

Seems Like We Just Left Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Yes!  We're back and ready to jacket up and put our warmer sandals on.  Mexico was sporting warm water (82º), warm air (85º) and hot food (woo-woo on the Ed Scale).  Speaking of Doc, he was up until late waiting for Rita and killing all of the Insectivores he brought back from the trip.  He was doing the "killa-cucaracha" and the Montezuma cha-cha simultaneously.  For all intents and purposes a good time was had by all and we snapped this little burner (#1) at Puerto on our way out... Looking through some rain washed hazy sun with 10 miles visibility.  Winds are slight onshore at 1 to 2kts and the sea surface has a slight tack.  The air was 52.0º and the water is 59.5º and can be 60º any time it wants.  High tide was at 10:19am +4.4' and low tide will be at 4:30pm +0.8'.  It's a scaled down SW swell out of 222º at 2.6' and it was 1' to 3' and some rideable little peaks if you could predict where they were going to break....

Unleashed Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he wave of the day went to Steve O'Brien.  Actually it wasn't exactly the wave but the kickout.  He was zooming on this zipper of a right (#1 not the actual wave, but an actor) and got to the corner and sent his board straight into the stratosphere.  It went up at Mach 2.5, but came back twice as fast at a little over Mach 5.5.  It sounded like he had broken something when the leash whacked his board.  He was just lucky it didn't hit him!  Got everyone's attention though...   M ostly cloudy morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth, except for some rip tide action off Donny's Reef.  The air temp was 55.5º and the water is 58.6º.  Low tide was at 9:47am +0.6' and high tide follows at 4:41pm +2.7' for a pretty damned low high tide... A t a touching ceremony this afternoon, we gathered to celebrate the life of Jim Sliff, Morgan's father.  A musician, a cra...

Theotokos Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Nothing like having Capitan Donaldo sending great images of his trip to Mexico (#1).  Wait until he wakes up one morning and all of his compatriots are standing there wishing him a good day as they march to the surf... Meanwhile, here it's 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air wasn't warm at 52.3º and the water wasn't that hot either at 58.5º.  Low tide at 8:02am +0.8' and high tide follows at 2:01pm +2.9'.  It's a SW swell out of 230º at 2.3' and it was 3'+ with some corners that didn't reveal themselves until you were on your way.  Was it a wall or could you make it?  What is Vegas saying? No class mañana or Monday, for the holiday, so let's see how many of the kids sleep in... ✠        "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Happy Valentine's Day Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... What better way is there to share a Happy Valentine's Day than to enjoy an adult beverage with your Valentine, even though all you gave her was a napkin with a hand drawn heart on it...  Okay, it came with the drink...  But it was hand drawn...   A little warmer this morning at 56.3º with the water hitting a 58.8º on the Fahrenheit scale.  15 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were out of the east by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Low tide was at 6:37am +0.8' and high tide fills in at 12:27pm +3.7'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 2.3' and it was 2' to 4' on the outside and mailing some of those new sandbars.  Still a little wally, but depending on the tide there can be a corner or two... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
