R.I.P. Rip Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Jeff "Rip" Oneal.  He figured prominently in some of the first trips to Saladitas and the Ranch.  It was at the Ranch where he got his nickname by jumping into the rip and getting sucked along the beach.  Not a real problem except that he was in such a hurry to get in, that his leash was still wrapped around the tail of his board and he wasn't able to paddle out of the current.  Esky jumped in and towed his ass to safety.  He was a talented dentist and had a number of practices over the years.  He famously rode motorcycles and probably had as many close calls and accidents as Danger Boy, erasing numerous tattoos courtesy of road rash.  He courageously fought the demons of substance abuse and had been clean and sober for the last three years.  He died of an hereditary heart ailment in South Carolina.  He's pictured here (#1) second from left at Restaurant Daysi at the Ranch.  With him (L to R) are Jim Egnatuk, (Rip,) the Professor, T.J. and Joe Murphy.

Partly cloudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 64.0º and the water is 69.8º and maybe we're just a tad worried that it might not get to 70 again this season.  Low tide was at 5:07am +0.0' and high tide will be at 11:25am +6.0'.  It's a SSW swell out of 210º at 3.9' and it was a fun 3' to 4'.
