  Lost Boys & Co... A ccording to Ladyspaine, Thomas the cat (#1) likes everything about surfing, except the water... B right and clear this morning and almost warm in some spots, with 51º on the beach and 61.0 in the water.  20+ miles visibility.  No wind and a glassy sea surface.  High tide was early at 5:43am +5.9' and low tide follows at 12:48pm -0.1.  Low tides in the pm for the rest of the year.  A WSW swell out of 243º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' and poor to fair with some almost corners at the higher tide... O n the "Paine's Fire Protection" lifestyle team we have Boomfwappa and the Professor (#2) modeling their new team jackets.  Very nice and a thank you to Paine's Fire and Charlie Paine! O ne last parting Santa shot (#1) as Santa Eddy heads for the pier and a quick trip back to the North Pole to start working on all the good stuff for next year!  (photo credit:  Ray Vidal, Easy Reader)  He has to start working on the "Hotdogger Contest as well , if he wants to have another good year... C ontinued chilly this morning with an almost cloudless sky and 10 miles visibility.  No wind and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 46.9 and the water is still in the 60's at 61.0.  High tide was at 5:01am +5.4' and low tide follows at 12:01pm +0.7', setting up for minus pm tides for the next week.  We have a WSW swell out of 241º at 2.6' and that translated into 2' to 3' waves, that were better than they have been for the last week or so...  It's been better earlier, so if you're ready to brave the chill you might score a couple before the tide drains the sink... T he traditional Christmas morning surf featuring Suzi on this chilly little peeler (#1).  She's on the "Mondrian Model."  The best part was that she didn't lose her hat all morning... A bit hazy but still 15 miles visibility and not much in the way of clouds.  Winds were offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 48.8 and the water is 60.8.  Low tide was at 11:08am +1.5' and high tide will be at 4:42pm +3.3'.  We have a WSW swell out of 243º at 3.0' and it was a walled 2' to 3' and not very appealing.  We appear to need something that's going to dredge the bottom around and create some sandbars... S urfer always have a bit of a different take on things.  In this case it's the ugly Christmas sweater #1 modeled by surfer, photographer, world traveler Brendan Simmons.  This one isn't as ugly as it is terrifying.  Nothing quite as ominous as a hammerhead wearing a Santa hat... A little hat goes a long way...  Here we have LoLa (#1) doing her Slash impersonation as she awaits her red and green yogurt on the Friday before Christmas.  Just in case you wondered, it took us a lot of pleading to get her to fluff-up her hair and don the hat and shades...   Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have (#1) Morganeezer Scrooge checking out the surf this morning...  Wait... I f you felt a perturbation in the force this morning around 8:28am that's because that was the moment of the Winter Solstice.  So if you needed any further convincing, it's officially winter... 20+ miles visibility on this uber clear morning in the So. Bay.  Wind blew like crazy last night with gusts up to 30kts.  It's currently from the north at 5kts and there's some residual bump.  The air was a downright cold 41.9 and the ocean withstood the blast and is still in the 61.5 range.  High tide is at 9:59am +5.4' and low tide follows at 5:24pm -0.1'.  We have an oblique NNE swell from 13º at 4.6' and it's a bumped 2' and almost looks rideable... P artly cloudy this morning and besides being small, it was just wrong.  10 miles visibility.  Winds were fluky out of the NE by 3.3kts and the sea surface had a slight bump.  The air was a brisk 47.8 and the water is down another degree to 61.5.  High tide was at 9:27am +5.7' and low tide was at 4:48pm -0.3'.  We have a SW swell out of 235º at 2' and it was 2' and not much push this morning.  However, the surf has continued to build and as we speak the buoy is registering a 6.2' swell out of the west.  Unfortunately, the wind has also picked up and it's currently 7 to 12 kts and by midnight it's forecast to be 20 to 30kts.  In the wee hours of the morning it's supposed to turn from west to north.  We'll just have to see if things calm down enough to be rideable...  Check'um out... #2 is our resident hellman, Hugo Vau, charging down a good sized left in ...

A cool winter sun in a hazy sky.  10 miles visibility.  Winds are light offshore by 2.3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp at checkout was 48.3 and the water is 62.2.  A high tide at 7:04am +5.9' and low tide will follow at 2:05pm -0.2'.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 3.6' and it's slabby 3' to 5' waves at most of the beach breaks.  When the tide drops there are some possibilities if you look in the right places... B rent Broza is having a pop-up (#1) show at the old "Just Longboards."  Brent has some stellar images and this is a perfect time to get something for someone special for the holidays or just to satisfy your need to have a Broza original! C loudless skies and 20 miles visibility.  Winds continue to be offshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 50.6 and the water is holding at 62.4.  High tide was at 6:02am +5.6' and low tide is at 12:51pm +0.5'.  We have a WSW swell out of 252º at 3.9' and it was 3' to 5' with some block long walls that were unmakeable for the most part... (#2) Is a good example of when "one-size-fits-all" doesn't.  Now you have to discount the Professor's lid because he's got the hat under the helmet.  LoLa, obviously got the "big-girl" helmet and it almost looks like it's on backwards.  Sarah, somehow scored the only helmet that fit.  Probably ...

T he funny thing about photos #1 & #2 is that the birds we took photos of were OUT of the cages.  The toucan was sitting on the outside of the cage waiting for the birds inside to get fed.  They always slop a bit of food around and the feral birds drop by and get an extra helping.  The scarlet macaws were doing the same thing in #2.  Neither the toucan or the macaws are native to Roatan, but they were across the 37 mile strait that separates mainland Honduras and the islands.  No one is sure if they started out as pets or flew over, but they've flourished here and it's always fun when you spot them in the trees... 20 miles visibility and cloudless skies this morning.  Winds were offshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was glassy.  Actually, that's about it for the good news.  The air temperature was 50.1 and the water is holding at 62.4.  High tide was at 5:25am +5.4' and low tide will be at 12:03pm +1.0'....

  Lost Boys & Co... B ruce Brown has passed away.  There's something ironic about the man who brought us the "Endless Summer" passing away in the middle of winter...  It must have been in 1965 that my brother and I went to Pier Avenue Junior High School auditorium and watched Bruce himself narrate a 16mm copy of his film.  I don't even know if there was a poster yet.  If there was, we would have grabbed as many as we could from the telephone poles around town.  We had seen other Bruce Brown films like "Slippery When Wet" and "Barefoot Adventure", but "Endless Summer" was something else entirely.  It didn't just show surfing, but the notion of travel and discovery, not to mention the idea we all had about following summer around the globe.  I'll never forget the time we walked into Jacobs Surfboards and Jim Campbell saw Robert August behind the counter.  He was so flummoxed by coming face-to-face with this surf star from the ...

R oatan is not only famous for it's underwater life, but it's got some pretty cool terrestrial fauna as well.  #1 features LoLa and "Flash" the sloth.  It seems like everyone who looks at this photo says, "How cute!"  Sorry, he bares more than a passing resemblance to a branch of my mother's family that also recently came down from the trees...  No one thought they were cute...
