Lost Boys & Co... S o we see the surf dropping a bit in the next 24 hours (#1), but the pattern is set and the North Pacific is showing some intense storm activity!  In Hermosa this morning (#2) we had some axes falling on the brave and foolhardy.  Partly cloudy skies and 15miles visibility.  The air was 52.2º and the water was 59.7º.  Low tide was at 11:17am +1.5' and high tide filled in at 4:51pm +4.0', getting ready for the tide flip tomorrow.  We have a WSW swell out of 253º at 3.9' and it was 4' to 6' with some hollow but mainly unmakeable waves.  An exception to all that was Mr. Cristiano Von Stutzcanhang, shown here (#3) coming out of 57/58 and hanging deep on this circular grinder.  We're not saying he made this wave, but he got a lot farther than you would reasonably imagine...  He's been getting some great rides over the last week! C heck out the "StormSurf Forecast" (#1) and we're looking at a major swell event starting this evening and really rocking over the next two days.  This morning Tarsan, Doc ? and the Professor searched pretty much in vain for some corners somewhere.  (#2) This shot of Hermosa looks almost like there are some possibilities, but we can assure you that looks can be deceiving...  Actually, Flinch and Jae Rae went out and got properly educated.  When they came in Flinch noted that only expert surfers should attempt the waves today and that he wished there had been some out there to show him the way...  If you had discovered Hermosa today, you might have called it "Bank Vaults".  You could get in, but you couldn't get out...  Bobby Warchola also read us the riot act for not heading up to Ventura or Rincon or Santa Barbara.  He wanted to know why we decided to stick around the "armpit of the surfing world" and put up with Hermosa...

O ver the weekend, Saturday to be exact, we had some thumping surf!  As Bobby Wachola said, "It looks like a lot of trouble out there."  It was well over-head and pushing a lot of water in, out and digging some much needed holes.  There were two broken boards before 7:30!  We took this short clip of one of the cleaner waves of the sets... https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vZxbfhGUOb5cKL0M1ESx-IeY7-xAMBaO/view?usp=drivesdk Looking from the beach (#2) you get a better idea of just how fast things were moving.  You would've needed jets to beat this walled comber... C loudy skies and less than 10 miles visibility.  The air dipped down to 48.5º and the water was down a degree to 60.3º.  Clouds, cold wind and the water all conspired to make it a chilly go out.  Low tide wasn't that low at 8:41am +3.0' and high tide was at 1:52pm +4.3'.  We had a WSW swell out of 249º at a reported 2.6', but it was stronger and bigger than that,...

A t low tide (#1) looking along the finger reef that runs from the beach out to Rat Point.  Especially checking out  that rock that resides just below the surface at medium tide, it's always interesting seeing what's down there... C lear skies again today and 10 to 20 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 48.8º and the water is 61.3º, making for a pretty chilly morning.  High tide was at 10:28am +5.5' and low tide was at 6:19pm -0.1'.  We have a west swell out of 267º at 3.0', but it was 3' to 8'.  There would be a lull with some smaller waves and then there would be a set of outsides that would re-arrange your okolé.  There were abundant opportunities to be in the wrong place or in the right place for a block long eight-footer...  As hard as we looked, we couldn't make it look better... (#2.) Looks like a good day fishing...  W hen your inflatable swan has a hole in it...

Y es, Christmas on the Left Coast is always always a bit brighter.  Maybe it's the proximity to Hollywood, or the moon or the lights that makes it glow with it's own charm.  Tom Welch sent us this great shot of the lit-up Manhattan Pier (#1) with the setting moon in the background... B acking off from yesterday's thumpers the day started out smoky with 12 miles visibility and yellow skies due to another round of fires.  Winds were offshore from 3 to 6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 52.0º and the water is 61.9º High tide was at 9:49am +5.8' and low tide follows after dark at 5:28pm -0.2'.  We have a west swell out of 263º at 2.6' and it was 3' to 4' with some nicely shaped outsides.  Some of the best shaped waves we've had lately...  Forecasts say it's supposed to start building tomorrow, so let's check it out and see if we agree... A lrighty then, taking a look at our "StormSurf" forecast (#1) it looks like we're heading for some big surf over the next week!  Our first bump looks to be Friday and Saturday (4th & 5th) and then almost double that on the 9th and 10th.  Thanks to Joey Lombardo for turning us on to the StormSurf.com website.  It's one of those models that allows you to look at several factors and calculate how the swell might manifest itself in your area.  Let's see how that goes... A nother clear day with nary a cloud in sight.  Winds were out of the north by 4.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was chilly at 48.8º and the water is still 61.9º.  High tide is at 9:14am +6.0' and low tide will be at 4:44pm -0.3'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 3.3' and it was almost twice that big on the outsides at the pier.  There were some thumpers.  As we checked from Torrance to El Porto, Hermosa definitely had the biggest w...

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we go!  A lot of people bring down shovels to play in the sand.  But Doc ? (#1) has taken to eschewing the use of hardware and has jumped right in to using his ears..  And it appears he's done quite a fine job of it!  Actually, he was coming in and a rogue wave threw him into the washing machine and he got spit out of the spin cycle.  He emerged looking like a wobbly crumb doughnut, with many significant orifices filled with sand... C loudless skies with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the north by 2 to 3 kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 50.5º and the water is 61.5º.  High tide was at 8:43am +6.1' and low tide was at 4:05pm -0.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 3.3' and the surf was a high tide bounced 3' to 4' with occasional larger outsides.  The lefts were the stars of the show and all that training at Saladitas helped...
