Higher Ground Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... We are impressed that the tsunami warning system worked so magnificently!  It showed that in case of a disaster of any magnitude that NOAA and the NDBC (National Data Buoy. Center) are capable of alerting us in adequate time to prepare.  We can leave Idaho now… When we're out of pocket we rely on many of your texts to let us know how things are unfolding at home.  Like this note from Laurie Armer:  "Lanakila paddled yesterday afternoon. We could feel the swirling currents under the and on the surface. Even in the harbor. So different than normal!"  So much better than our note to Doc Scale:  "Any eddies Eddie?"  We'd also like to thank Kevin, Jodi and Anupa for giving us some sites with empirical data to evaluate.  Good stuff to have in our data cache… Partly cloudy in the South Bay this morning with 12 miles visibility.  Winds are onshore 3 to 5kts and the surface is lightly textured.  The air temp is 67.3 º and th...

Preferred Pronoun Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Hey Coke finally caught up to us and delivered the preferred pronoun of the Lost Boys / Sruf Familia.  (#1.).  You pick yours, we've picked ours.  And make no mistake, we love you just the same, maybe more… Partly cloudy and 10 mile visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were out of the west by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air was 63.8 and the water was 65.1 getting warmer throughout the day.  Low tide was at 6:24am +0.1' and high tide will be at 12:58pm +4.5'.  It's a typical SSW swell out of 201 at 2.6' and it was 1' to 2' and trying… Early wind on the lake, calming through the morning and glassing off in the evening… "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Tattoo You Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... So Julia is famous for her unique birthday gifts.  This year she gave the Professor stick-on tattoos of him in his salad days skating the backside of PV before they put in the houses on the Tramonto development.  Got to find out how she got those made.  The possibilities are endless! 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds out of the south by 7kts and the sea surface is sporting some heavy texture.  The air temp is 63.3 and the water isn't much better at 65.7.  We're not going to even discuss the wind chill.  High tide is at 11:16am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 4:46pm -1.2'.  It's a west swell out of 261degrees at 4.6' and it's a ragged 2' to 3' on the beach. The Easy Reader just ran a feature on Shellback Hats.  Should we counter with Brother's Burritos caps? "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

On The Road Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Here we are in Eagle Idaho, home of the Eagle High Mustangs.  Wait… why aren't they the  Eagle High "EAGLES?"  We asked that question of one of the locals and they said that when Eagle High was established there was already a team from the league (Capital High) that had the Eagles as a mascot.  Okay, so go Mustangs! Out front it's 11 miles visibility under mostly blue skies.  Winds are brisk out of the south at 7kts and the sea surface is sporting some texture.  The air is 65.0 and the water is 66.2 disappointing degrees.  High tide is at 10:41am +4.2' and low tide is at 3:22pm +2.1'.  It's a SSW swell out of 198 at 3.3' it's oblique enough to only be 1' to 2' and peaked up from the wind… #1.  Proper equipment option for today's surf… Makes it easy to do 360's… "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Whereas, Whereas, Whereas, Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he accolades continue as Jah Morgan accepts a commendation from the city fathers (#1).  Here, councilman Saemanns, who started the presentation at 180lbs, continued to grow larger as he held forth, until he reached an almost pre-explosive size.  A shy and reluctant Jah accepted the recognition with signature humility... P artly cloudy this morning with the sun making a valiant effort to pop through the clouds.  11 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air temperature was 65.5 º  and the water is 67.6 º .  High tide will be at 10:06am +4.0' and low tide will be at 2:33pm +2.3'.  It's a SW swell out of 216 º  at 2.6' and it is 1' to 2' with smaller lulls... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Adventurous Trial Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... R ead in "The Surfer's Journal", "...which retells the Homeric tale in a series of collages where it's heroes are constructed of black paper cutouts, irrevocably reimagining the aesthetic of the narrative, while asserting the universality of the human quest for self-realization through adventurous trial." ...And we merely thought we were going to go surfing (#1 The Professor, Jah, Jetski and Rasta Pete in the background.) O vercast today (why should it be any different than yesterday?) 7 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore, 1 to 3kts and the sea was more textured that it should have been.  The air temperature was 64.3 º  and the water is 67.6 º .  High tide was at 9:27am +3.8' and low tide will be at 1:40pm +2.9'.  There's a south swell (which should tell you something right there) out of 199 º  at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' and poor. W ith an abundance of caution the lifeguards closed the beach from the Re...

Jah Morgan Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S he did it!  Jah Morgan surfed every day for ten (10, count 'em) years straight.  Through rain, heat, earthquakes, civil unrest, dark of night, too many injuries to name and just plain fatigue she paddled on.  She's our hero, a bona fide legend and a superstar.  Next time you wonder about whether or not you should paddle out, remember Morgan would be suiting up and not asking questions... O vercast with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 65.5 º and the water is posted sat 68.2 º , but it was more like 66 º .  High tide was at 8:42am +3.5' and low tide will be at 12:33pm +2.6'.  It a SSW swell out of 201 º  at 2.6' and it was an almost 1' and crowded... W hat ever will she do tomorrow? ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Woolly Thursday / Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T his (#1) is a photo from 1947 showing these divers in long wool underwear to stave off the cold.  There were no rubber suits readily available then so these abalone divers used the next best thing.  This is at Pebble Beach near Monterey and the water is typically in the low 50's and high 40's.  This probably kept the number of abs they caught to a minimum.  The divers were (L) J.G. Carlisle and (R) Neil Weston.  The photo was taken by Cole Weston and if the Weston name sounds familiar it's because their father Edward was a noted photographer.   S till in the small range this morning, but the sunny skies were a plus.  The onshore flow was light at 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth. The air was 62.8 º  and the water is 67.3 º .  Low tide was at 9:09am +1.7' and high tide follows at 4:16pm +5.5'.  It's a south swell out of 199 º  at 3.6' and it was 2' to almost 3' with some double ups and maybe even ...

Red Car Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T here's a spot outside of about 14th St. that they call "Cable Cars."  It only breaks when it's huge and then it might almost qualify as a tow-in spot.  So to begin with it should be called "Red Cars" because that's what they sank there to create an artificial reef.  The Pacific Electric Railroad was going the way of the dinosaurs and they had all of these Red Cars gathering dust.  They sank a bunch of these, in what could be considered a relative underwater desert, then monitored the reef to see if it attracted fish.  Well it did and it inspired J.G. and his crew to consider larger more stable reefs.  It wasn't long before worms ate away most of the wood, but for years the steel wheels looked like pick-up-sticks on the bottom. W e could have used a reef this morning, or more accurately a swell. It was partly cloudy and visibility was 10 miles.  Winds were out of the south 1 to 3kts freshening to 15kts by noon.  Lots of bump...

Monday / Tuesday Mash Up Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Talking to 'Nupes the other day inspired LoLa to dig into some of her father, John G. (Jack) Carlisle's papers.  He was a prolific research marine biologist and authored and contributed to innumerable papers, articles and peer reviewed studies.  We thought we'd run a couple of photos to see what some of the early scientists and environmentalists (that term didn't even exist at the time) were up to (or down to).  We thought we'd start out with a photo (#1) from the late forties that show him (L) and his dive partner, Chuck Turner (R) resting after a dive at what looks like Paradise Cove.  A couple of things about this photo caught our eye.  The scuba gear is bare bones.  No wetsuits, buoyancy compensators, dive watches or depth gauges.  Not even sure if they had proper regulators!  Jack's scuba certification was #6 in the state!  He used to get upset when Jacques Cousteau would all but take credit for inventing scuba! Lost Boys & Co... N o Burnsy does not really have a big mustache.  She's using one of those blonde ends to be one of the guys.  Looks good though... T he big news in the water this morning was the drop in temperature.  It was 63.0 º  in the air and a chilly 64.6 º  in the water.  Rogue current?  Up-welling?  We have no idea, but it felt like a 4/3 might be a sane option.  To top it off the wind was blowing a stiff 3 to 6kts adding a bit of wind chill to the proceedings.  High tide was late at 11:31am +3.8' and low tide follows at 3:48pm +2.3'.  It's a WSW swell out of 250 º  at 3.0' and it was a solid 3' to 4'.  Jah Morgan and Doc put on quite a show, grabbing some nice outside wedges.  H eading to the South Bay Dozen at Torrance Beach in the morning.  Some Olympic caliber athletes showing off their skills.  Goes all morning and into the afternoon! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Technicolor Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o here (#1) we have a frame grab from a 1970 8mm film of Tim Larking shredding Topaz St.  We were testing our first garage shaped shortboards and Tim's tended to be more spear-like than most.  Later folks would be riding surprisingly similar shapes to surf Pipeline.  The Professor leaned toward shorter fatter vehicles, but face it, when you're 20 anything works! C lear skies and 15 miles visibility..  Winds were moderate out of the south ruffling things a bit.  The air temp was 59.0 º at checkout and the water is 63.7 º .  High tide was at 11:00am +3.7' and low tide follows at 3:08pm +2.5'.  Buoy #46221 showed a WSW swell out of 252 º  at 3.0' and it was 3' to 3.5' and a bit ragged.     R eminding you that Saturday is the South Bay Dozen (#2) dodecathon featuring dory racing, run, swim, paddle and surf ski competitions.  They still need volunteers to assist, so If you're free on Saturday come on down to...
