Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have Eli Mosian working a small bump on the inside.  He actually caught some pretty big bombers during this session, but every time we got our camera ready it would go flat. O vercast with 5 miles visibility, winds out of the north by 0 to 2kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air was 52.2º and the water is a chilly 57.4º.  High tide was at 8:35am +6.4' and low tide will be at 4:05pm -1.1'.  It's a west swell out of 260º at 4.9' and it's breaking 4' to 6'+ and there are some walls with the occasional corner.  B e careful tonight and have a Happy New Year's Eve.  We're going to hide and bring in the new year with New York! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Cloudy this morning with less than 4 miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 2 to 5kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air was 51.0 at checkout and the water is 58.1.  High tide was at 6:23am +5.5' and low tide follows at 1:50pm -0.2'.  It's a west swell out of 260degrees at 4.6', but it's pounding at 5' to 6' and looks a bit chilly and not so welcoming. We've often been asked if we have a muse.  Contrary to popular belief she is rather shy, but smart and always has a brilliant response to our most vexing editorial dead ends!  She's a great surfer, race car driver, brain surgeon, acrobat… we could go on.  She relented and let us take a pic, even though her hair was a mess (We thought it looked great.). We call her "Barbina", but you might know her simply as Barbie. (#1) Things are clearing up!  And we're cleaning up!  Winds are out of the south by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air was 54 and the water is 58.1.  High tide is at 5:51am +5.2' and low tide follows at 1:20pm +0.3'.  So it's West swell out of 263 degrees at 6.9' and it's overhead at most spots, but a manageable 3' to 4' at Sapphire.  Barbina says if she were in California she said she'd hit Rat. Lost Boys & Co...   5 Miles visibility under cloudy skies.  No rain in the forecast, but there is a large front looming out there with intent to loom!  Winds are on shore 3 to 5kts and the sea surface is a bit ruffled.  The air is 54.0 and the water is 57.4.  High tide was early at 4:45am +4.6' and low tide will be at 11:59am +1.4'.  It's a WSW swell out of 257 degrees at an impressive 7.2'.  If pictures of the Breakwall are any indication it's big and bigger. W e found the perfect gift for Birdie! If you're in Idaho, it's raining.  If you're in Hermosa Beach, it's overcast and looks like it could rain.  It's 56.0 in the air and 57.9 in the water.  Low tide is at 11:00am +1.9' and high tide will be at 4:02pm +2.8' which is a pretty low high tide.  Winds are light offshore 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is rolling.  It's a west swell out of 272 degrees at 7.2' And it looks bigger to us, but let's say it's walled and looking at 10' faces. Lots of face there, more than enough to pull in and wait for Christmas… If you're haven't had the opportunity to checkout Anupa's latest paper on "Marine Protected Areas" then do it!  Go to "frontiersin.org" and check it out.  Even if you"re not a scientist it's really accessible and well worth the read to all of us who spend a considerable amount of time in the brine and are concerned about the environment.  Congratulations on her scholar...

O kay, Jodi Flicker called it this morning - it's going to be a White Christmas!  Up here in Idaho we ran into this version of a white Christmas (#1).  These are Silver Dollar plants or "Moonwort."  They crowd the creek banks and look like flurries of snow.  We waiting for the real deal, maybe we'll get lucky! F oggy in the South Bay with limited visibility.  Winds out of the east by 2 to 3kts.  Can't see the sea surface.  Air is 52.0 and the water is 59.0.  Low tide was at 6:28am +2.8' and high tide will be at 11:54am +4.4'.  If you could see it, it's a west swell out of 273degrees at 2.3' and who knows how big it really is. W ho's YOUR secret Santa?  They should be there in photo #1.  Now if you've been good, this image shouldn't bring up any apprehension.  But if you've been less than good or mischievous, well there might be some trepidation...  The young man at the bottom right was only trying to figure out who was the real deal... H ere (#1) we have the ever popular Christiano Von Stutzcanhang, not hanging ten, but hanging back for a little tube time.  Yesterday he probably caught 25 waves and made it out of 5.  But he made them look really good! A bit more smaller today, as Rabbit might say.  But beautiful, for the benefit of the Chamber of Commerce and all of us sun worshipers.  20 miles visibility and offshore winds 1 to 5kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air was 47.2º and the water is 57.7º.  High tide is at 9:36am +6.7' and low tide will be at 5:07pm -1.1'.  It's a west swell out of 274º at 3.0' and it was 3' to 4' and looking smaller but just a good shape as it's been all week. One of those mornings when you really feel like you're on a planet!  Of course maybe you feel like that all the time, but this morning we had the moon setting over the Hermosa Pier (#1) and the sun rising in the east just like Uncle Bob said it would.  Of course Christmas is rolling inexorably toward that special morning and we're just wondering if the stockings were hung with care or just thrown on the mantle... But the surf!  There was a present.  The day was beautiful with manicured offshore winds and smooth conditions.  The air was 45.9º when we came barreling down the highway and the water was 57.6º  High tide was at 8:53am +6.8' and low tide will be at 4:23pm -1.4'.  It was a west swell out of 272º at 4.3' and it was 4' to head high and some well shaped wedges spitting down the beach. W hatever you think about Friday the Thirteenth, Charlie Lentz thought it was an unlucky day.  He was probably one of the three standout surfers in the water this morning behind Rylan Gracie who go a double tube and came out and Hunter Sleeis who got shacked for a good fifty feet.  Charlie was ripping it up and when the whistle blew to get out he went for one more, paddled late, went over the falls and landed on his board.  Two for the price of one.  Even worse, he's got a Boardriders Contest tomorrow and that was his only whip.  We're pretty sure someone will give him a loaner... S ome of the biggest waves we've had this year, probably 5' to 7' with some bigger outsides.  Offshore winds at 1 to 3kts helped keep them up and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 47.0º and the water is 57.6º.  It broke through high tide at 6:48am +6.9' and will probably get lined up at 2:09pm for a -1.3' low tide.  It's a west swel...

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have Brin from Ohio living the dream and driving the SRUF FAMILIA bus.  We told him to keep it under a hundred and he said he would, but you know how kids are these days... M eanwhile we had 10 miles visibility and skies that started out sunny and got run over by a cloudy front that passed through.  Winds were variable starting out offshore and quickly changing to a buffeting blow.  The air temp was 43.3º, enough to stiffen your Jello™ and the water was 57.4º.  Five of the swimmer ladies went out and only two wore wetsuits.  They will all live to be over a hundred.  High tide was at 6:08am +6.6' and low tide follows at 1:21pm -0.7'.  It's a WSW swell out of 255º at 3.9' and it was 3' to 5' in the surfline, but pretty cronky... L ast weekend we got a chance to listen to the founders of the "Coral Gardeners"  Started by Titouan Bernicot (#1) as a teenager who saw his local Tahitian Reef being decimated by climate change.  He started picking out healthy corals that he imagined were resistant to warmer water and propagating them.  His project quickly gained notoriety and was embraced by the scientific community.  They soon realized this was a worldwide problem.  He noted that "Coral reefs are the most biodiverse and valuable ecosystem on our planet, yet they are one of the most impacted by climate change and human pressures, in peril of going extinct by 2050."  They are revolutionizing ocean conservation and creating a global movement to save the reefs.  To learn more about this movement go to: coralgardeners.org and check out their great website.  It would also be a great excuse to go to Tahiti and check out their work... Lost Boys & Co... T his will most likely be the next vehicle after the bus (#1)... C lear skies with smoke from the Franklin Fire occluding the horizon.  Winds were out of the north by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air was 46.0º and the National Weather Service said "It feels like 39!"  Why isn't that 39??  The ocean was 58.8º and felt exactly like 58.  High tide was early at 4:53am +5.5' and low tide will be at 11:39am +0.9'.  It's a SW swell out of 216º at 2.6' and it was a lined up 2' to 3'. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

T ake a look at the attachment for the announcement of the benefit for Greg Browning.  Greg was one of the best surfers to come out of the South Bay (Think Alex Gray level.)  He's been stricken with MS and all the proceeds from the event will go to him and his family.  If you haven't seen the VEFA Gallery yet, this would also be a good time to catch the "Art of Surf" Exhibit. C aught in the orbit of Brother's Burritos (#1).  The only thing we could think of that they have in common is that they're waiting to see what Boris will do next.  That includes Boris!   7 miles visibility under cloudy skies and onshore winds at 3 to 5kts.  The sea surface has a bit of windy tack to it.  The air was 52.5º and the water is 58.8º.  High tide was at 10:42am +5.6' and low tide follows at 6:39pm -0.2'.  It's a SW swell out of 223º at 3.0' and it was fatter than that at 3' to 5' and closing out on most of the bigger swells... C ontest mañana at Hermosa! T here was a magnitude 7.0 earthquake of of the coast in northern California as we were writing the report.  Tsunami warnings up from the Oregon border to just below San Francisco.  There have also been a number of significant aftershocks!  The closest city is Petrolia, CA near Cape Mendocino.  Expecting some waves around 12:10pm in the north....

F or all you train spotters out there, we thought we'd throw in this painting/graffito (#1) by Risk Rock who's currently displayed at the VEFA art gallery.  We showed this to Clarke and he said, "Yeah, I know that guy's stuff!"  He's seen it on the trains coming in and out of the port.  Lots more surf related art.  The show goes on until January 6th.  Gallery is opened Wednesday through Sunday from 12 to 8pm. H ere (#1) we have a professional lurker with a professional loomer.  On assignment in the far north, the Professor lurks behind the good doctor Scale who is in the midst of looming.  They were unable to fill us in on the details of their gambit, abundantly cautious about where such information might lead them and who may or may not be implicated.  Everyone is a suspect...
