Memory Lane Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... B efore Saladitas and the Ranch blew up, say 1999, 2000 you could be there with your crew and two other guys in the water.  This is the Ranch and the only thing there was "Restaurant Daysi" and it wasn't always open.  When it was, they had the best "red rice" on the planet.  There's Maria and Daysi with Joe Murphy standing and seated Jim "The Coach" lately "The Deacon" Egnatuk, Jeff "Rip" Neal, The Professor and Tyrone James Maggio.  Mona Neal, did a painting of this pic, but this looks like the original photo.   T hen, there's here and now and it's windy out of the WSW by 5 to 7kts and the sea surface is a little beyond textured, but not choppy.  Partly cloudy at checkout with 10 miles visibility.  It was 61.3 º  and the water at the buoy was 64.2 º .  Hermosa Lifeguards had it posted as 70 º  on the HQ.  Low tide at 7:54am +0.1' and high tide at 2:53pm +4.3'.  It's a SSW swell out of 2...

Fashionably Fast Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou'll immediately recognize this modified Huffy Radiobike as the co-star of "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."  It  gets stolen and Pee Wee endeavors to get it back.  Articulated front shocks, vented everything, fins to the front and fins to the rear.  It had metal panniers and a killer generator.  There's a LOT going on but for our money the propeller on the front says it all.  Okay maybe the spiral wheel hubs juice it up... M eanwhile, now it's blowing but at go-out it was offshore at 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  Overcast and 11 miles visibility.  The air was 65.5 º and the water is 66.7 º , but felt warmer than that.  Low tide was at 5:50am -1.4' and high tide follows at 12:33pm +4.0'.  A SSW swell out of 195 º  at 3.0', it was low-tide crashy and kinda fun hopeless... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Ladies, Gentlemen & Children Of All Ages Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere are a couple of late forties Strand Cruisers.  #1 top featured a radio, but before transistors, it had tubes that were located in the lower crossbar along with the tuner.  KNX came in like a champ and KFWB & KRLA kept you in sync with the latest tunes!  The bulge just behind the seat was the battery.  It was like a camping battery so it needed it's own compartment.  The pedals were aerodynamically designed and the lug nuts had shielded covers.    O vercast this morning but the sun is trying hard to break through the gloom.  13 miles visibility and the winds were offshore 1 - 3kts.  The air at checkout was 63.7 º  and the water could be a bit warmer at 66.9 º .  Low tide was early at 5:04am -1.6' and high tide follows at 11:47am +3.9'.  It's a SW swell out of 230 º  at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' but a bit crashy. #1 bottom is subtle and well designed.  Clock on the crossbar so you can see...

Jump In The Air Come Down In Slow Motion Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o (#1 top) was one of our faves.  It featured a steam-bent oak frame and traditional metal hardware.  We immediately imagined, "Could you do that with bamboo?"  There's only one way to find out! O vercast this morning with 13 miles visibility.  Sun was trying to break through.  Winds were variable and actually stopped for about 20 minutes from the nominal 1 to 3kts.  A bit of surface texture.  The air was 63.5 º  and the water is 66.9 º .  High tide was at 11:00am +3.9' and low tide will be at 3:21pm +2.3'.  The really high tide today is this evening at 9:41pm a +6.9' floater.  Last night we actually thought you could paddle from Sapphire to Topaz OVER the rocks.  Haven't done that in a while!  It's a west swell out of 263 º  at 3.0' and it was 3' with some nice soft balls coming through.  It was Jah, Ronnie, Doc and the Professor doing the dance... T his (#1 bottom) bike was a an adventu...

Through Rain, Snow, Sleet & Ice Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A couple of interesting bikes. (#1a)  The one on the top has a hammock for a seat and radiating webbing on the back wheel to keep your skirts from getting caught.  It also had a kick-ass generator that would light half of Cincinnati.  Articulated mechanical brakes were the precursor to the cable brakes we now use... O vercast this morning with 14 miles visibility.  Winds were variable starting straight offshore, then from the south and then straight on.  All the while at 3 to 5kts.  The sea surface was a bit tacked.  The air was 63.0 º  but felt chillier with the wind and the water is 67.3 º .  High tide is at 10:13am +3.8' and low tide will be at 2:30pm +2.2'.  It's a SSW swell out of 194 º  at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' and longboard friendly.  A welcome change from the crashers of late. (#1b) T he bike on the bottom is made for ice racing.  Those 3" rear spikes look like they could perforate the ice...

Move It Along Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... In 1956 if you came pedaling down the street in this number (#1) your friends would swallow their gum, throw themselves on the ground and turn green with envy (or from swallowing that baseball sized wad of gum.)  Dual headlights, a sculpted frame and a design that makes it look like it's moving when it's standing still.  We found this beauty (and this weeks velocipedes) at the Cincinnati Art Museum, which in our opinion is an amazing gem in the middle of the country.   Mostly clear this morning with a few clouds bouncing around the firmament.  10 miles visibility.  Winds were strong offshore 4 to 8kts and the sea surface was smooth with a little offshore tack.  The air temperature was 58.6 º and the water is 67.5 º .  High tide was at 9:21am +3.6' and low tide will be at 1:30pm +2.2'.  It's a WSW swell out of 257 º  at 3.9' and it was a steady 4' with some fatter outsides.  Was not looking deluxe.  Crashy ...

A Juneteenth Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Communications weren't so hot in 1865 so it took a minute for the news to get to Texas-that the slaves were now free.  Being Texas, they immediately made it a holiday. We approve… A bit of overcast to greet the morning.  Wind is offshore by 3kts and the sea surface is smooth.  Low tide is at 10:21am +1.0' and high tide follows at 5:10pm +5.0'.  The air is 64.7 and the water is 66.4.  We have a SSW swell it of 204  deg. At 3.0' and it's 2' t 3' and a bit walled and wonky… Here we have the Ohio river (#1) which you can plainly see has no surf.  This is exactly why Horace Greeley said "Go west young man!"  It is not recorded but we believe he also said, "Don't stop until you get to Hermosa Beach!"  Fine gentleman that Horace…   "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Kentucky Whiskey Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Note:  Read today's report in your best Foghorn Leghorn southern drawl. Here we are in Kentucky at the Woodford Reserve Whiskey Distillery sipping some of their small batch brown in front of the fire.  We had collectively been on the wagon for who knows how long and decided once we left the confines of the Golden State, I said GOLDEN State, that we would imbibe in the nectar of this special region.  Well, it was smooth, tasty, expensive and settled us right into the oeuvre of the countryside… Nuff, said, said NUFF said… Meanwhile at home it's offshore and sunny.  Blowing 5kts out of the east and it's 65.5 in the air and it's jumped all the way to 66.7 in the water.  Low tide is at 9:33am +0.6' and high tide will be at 4:28pm +4.9'.  It's a west swell out of 263 at 3.9' and it looks to be 2' to 3' and delightful.  Patience and a clever attitude will help you today in the surf and out! "When the surf breaks, we'll fix...

Kentucky Fried Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Here we are in Kentucky at the John G. Carlisle school named after LoLa's greatX3 grandfather.  He was a state senator, congressman, senator, speaker of the house and finally secretary of the treasury!  Quite a few things carry his name and it's fun visiting the old home grounds. South Bay is waking up to a late spring morning with light to no winds out of the east.  10 miles visibility and a bit humid.  62 in the air and 65.5 in the water.  Looking to hit around 76 mid-day.  It's a 4.3' swell out of the west (263).  Looking 2' to 3' and a little wally, but could be helped if the tide does something, anything…. You can noseride…. Water could be warmer… "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Wednesday Wilson, Thursday, Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T o say this week has been a tad hectic is an understatement of some proportion.  But we should behind with our sincere condolences at the passing of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson (#1).  We feel doubly bad because for years we carried on about surf music before the Beach Boys.  Yes, the Surfaris, Dick Dale, the Ventures, the Challengers and the Sentinels (and many others) will always be faves in our collection.  BUT, it's hard to argue that the Wilson's really added something to the soundtrack of our lives.  So maybe now Brian can really learn to surf and work on hot rods and have fun, fun, fun...    O vercast this morning, with less than 5 miles visibility.  But to our delight and surprise the sun came peeking out and ratcheted up the temps in short order.  The air was 65.0 º  and the water was 64.4 º .  Winds were out of the SSW 3 to 6kts and the sea surface was textured.  Low tide was early at 5:50am -0...
