Queen Of The Night Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... L ooks like this (#1) was taken from a Dutch still-life.  Actually this is a "Queen of the Night" plant that only opens it's blossoms at night.  It's on the patio at our Mar de Fuego estate and was a gift from the ever popular Dane DeLuca.  Despite messing with our bed time we made the effort to capture the bloom at it's fullest.  Why does it open at night?  Because it's pollinated by bats and moths!  We sent a message to the Batman to open the cave...  You might have seen it in the sky... W hoa!  Three summer days in a row!  Hazy though and only 5 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were calm, but the sea surface still had a bit of roll to it.  The air was 63.9 º  and the water was a delightful 71.2 º .  High tide was at 9:39am +4.5' and low tide follows at 2:38pm +2.0'.  Still that SSW swell out of 195 º  at 3.0',but it was a little fatter than that and we'll call it 3' to 4' and could h...

Another Trip Around The Sun Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... D oesn't it rankle you a bit when somebody says, "Well, he's seventy-six years young!" especially when you've gone to all that trouble to preserve yourself  and try to look decent at your age.  Or even our titular "Another trip around the sun!"  Let's keep it simple, "Happy Birthday Doc!"  At 76 nobody is going to be "young."  And actually Doc is more fit than any other 76 year old we've seen.  We had a rather lengthy discussion this morning and what we can say is that he has a lot of wisdom to share.  Take advantage of his experience show him your spine or that wonky knee...  (#1) Well wishers... H azy sun this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm but the sea surface was a bit bumped.  The air temperature was 63.7 º  and the water is 70.0 º and you are 98.6 º .  High tide is at 9:10am +4.2' and low tide will be at 1:51pm +2.3'.  We still have that SSW swell out of 209 º  at 3.3' ...

Just This Once Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... L et's not go crazy yet, but it's beginning to almost look like summer.  It started out moist, almost drizzling with 4 miles visibility.  No wind and calm seas.  The air temperature was 63.8 º  and the water is trying at 69.4 º .  High tide was more like medium at 8:40am +3.9' and low tide is at 12:58pm +2.7'.  Still a SSW swell out of 202 º  at 2.6' and it was a fun but slightly walled 2' to 3'. O kay, so we're not quite sure how to say this, but it's true.  The Professor participated in a commercial for Corona  Beer, highlighting elderly folks who still fling themselves into the water.  There was certainly more flinging than drinking.  Anyway, we thought you might be amused so here it is (#1.)  Cheers!  ✠   "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Even More Than Malibu Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... M alibu has the "Pit" but Sapphire has the "Wall."  Unbelievably, Pool Man Mark was absent so there's Danny Hough, the Professor and Eric Helfenstein.  Thanks to Billy Mac for the photo, he should have had a seat as well.  If the Helfenstein name sounds familiar, you might remember Don "Crankshaft" Helfenstein, Eric's cousin.  He once asked why we called him "Crankshaft?" "Is it because I'm cranky?"  We said, "Well, you're a real gear-head... and yeah, you're cranky." P artly cloudy this morning with the sun breaking through and warming things up a bit.  10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 66.9 º and the water is 69.6 º.  High tide was at 8:03am +3.6' and low tide was at 11:43am +3.0'.  Still that SSW swell out of 203 º  at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' and pretty fun with the offshores and the sun peeking out....

Cops On Vice Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Talk about cops on vice!  They were down in force this morning in Hermosa looking for a possible kidnapping/trafficking/slavery victim.  Where did all this go down?  They were checking out Baja Sharkeys to see if anyone remembered anything.  Who has ever remembered anything after a night at Sharkeys?  Consensus was that she wasn't Shanghaied, but left without telling her friends.  Simplest answer is usually the best… Overcast with 7 miles visibility.  Winds were wild offshore then shifted from the south stirring up some wil's surface chop.  The air was 66 º and the water was 67.8 º and that's being generous.  Low tide was at 7:29am +1.9' and high tide follows at 2:28pm +5.5'.  It was a SSW swell out of 205 º at 4.3' and it was 2' to 3' and wild and smashing. We put our best man on the Shanghai caper.  Yeah, that's Detective Miller out of the King Harbor station.  No relation to Barney Miller… Chill glasses...

Cold On Ice Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e left the top of this screen grab that says "Restaurants".  But the red area isn't a peoples restaurant, it's where your gonna find a lot of sharks having breakfast, lunch and dinner.  We're okay with the fact that Lunada By is included in this area, because we're not going to surf there.  As long as they don't sneak around to the Cove it's alright.  No shirts, no shoes, no fins... D amn, it's been cold all this week.  5 miles visibility and it was overcast AND hazy.  Winds were out of the south 3 to 7kts and outside of the wind line of the Topaz jetty the surface was heavily textured.  Sapphire was pretty calm despite the wind.  The air was a relentlessly cool 64.0 º  and the reported water temp is 70.2 º, but honestly it didn't feel that warm.  No sun chills everything.  Low tide is at 6:53am +1.3' and high tide is at 1:34pm +5.5'.  It's a SSW swell out of 205 º  at 3.9' and it was 3' to 4' and...

White On Rice Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#'s 1 & 2) we've shaken the family tree and out fell a couple of ancestors who were obviously related to our mustachioed colleagues.  Whether or not you believe in evolution the resemblance is still striking... O vercast skies and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were switching around early and by 8am it was turning onshore.  2 to 6kts and it went from smooth to roughed up.  The air was 65.3 º  and the water is 70.5 º , but the wind chill cooled it down to shivers.  Low tide was at 6:20am +0.6' and high tide will be at 12:51pm +5.3'.  It's a SSW swell out of 199 º  and it was a tubular 3.9'.  Jacked to more like 4' but still cracking.  Speaking of cracking, Steve O'Brien got smacked on the side of the head and needed a little first aid.  Welcome to Hermosa!     ✠   "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Spots On Dice Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he kids think that a lot of old surf names are funny.  They're favorite is Bunker Spreckles.  Cousin Charlie hung with him in Hollywood.  But, we have a few of our own monikers.  L to R:  Gumby, Doc, Professor, Jetski & Don Congrejo...  Take that Bunker... O vercast and the wind out of the SE at 5 to 9kts made it chilly.  Sea surface was tacked up.  The air temperature was 62.9 º  and the water has made the jump to 70.3 º .  Low tide was at 5:50am +0.0' and high tide rises to it's peak at 12:15pm +5.1'.  It's a thumping SSW swell out of 200 º  at 4.6' and other than the righteous right Doc nailed it was a critical 4' to 5' and not made for happy longboarders.  We went home and stuck our slim Barahona Bullet into the bus... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... C elebrating an other trip around the sun for Morgan the magnificent (in pink tiara.)   Limited seating was met with some conflicts at the entrance and unfortunately many were turned away.  Okay, maybe next year... 10 miles visibility under hazy skies.  Winds were light onshore 0 to 3kts and the sea surface was relatively calm.  The air was 61.9 º  and the water is 69.8 º  trying desperately to get to 70.  Low tide was at 5:20am -0.4' and high tide will be at 11:41am +4.9'.  It's a SSW swell out of 208 º  at 3.6' and it was 3' to 4' in the surfline.  Crashy at first, but more fun than it looked...   ✠                                          "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Fish Fry Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e often leave our woven mat out by our bus to dry out during the day.  This fuchsia blossom (#1) landed right in the middle of the mat and it just seemed to be so pleased with itself we had to record it.  Okay so that's a bit anthropomorphic but so are we... A tad windy this a.m. as we were met with onshores in the 3 to 5kt range, enough to rough things up on the surface.  Visibility was 9miles under hazy skies.  The air temp was 63.9 º  and the water was 68.4 º  and with a slight bit of rubber felt pretty good.  High tide was at 9:26am +4.0' and low tide followed not that low at 2:06pm +2.1'.  It was a south swell out of 190 º  or 190th St. if you were in Hermosa. 4.3' and it was a solid 3' to 4' and so consistent that Christian had to help Anupa get her 11'2" paddleboard out of the surfline so they could in their 2 miles to the 90210 house.  Doc and the Professor decided to brave the short period swells and sur...

Hot Dogger Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere's (#1) man's best friend leaning into this little right and getting ready to hang a paw or two.  Judging by the looks on some of their faces we're not sure some of the doggers are into it, but the owners swear they come back for more... H azy sun with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore and then stopped completely.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature at checkout was 65.0 º  and the water is trying at 68.5 º.  High tide was at 8:46am +3.6' and low tide will be at 12:45pm +2.7'.  It's a SSW swell out of 195 º  at 3.0' and the surf was an adorable 2' to 3' and full of J.G.'s by the time we exited the water... 2 pm at Sapphire today for a dip with Suzi and LoLa...  Promises to be "refreshing." ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Exactly Where Is "Aubrieland" Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y es, we're back from the wilds of Idaho and actually the not-so-wilds as well.  Turns out all of the Californians who have moved there have brought cars, trucks, maniacal driving, bad manners and mega-mansions to the formerly rural Boise environs.  Unfortunately for Boise, but we're kinda glad those folks left.  We did manage to get up to Lake Payette and get some mountain time in and a bit of boating with Capt. Steve... A beautiful simmer's morning with 11 miles visibility under clear skies.  Winds wee light offshore 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 63.9 º  and the water is 67.8 º warming a bit through the morning.  High tide is at 8:39am +3.4' and low tide is at 11:56am +2.9'.  We have a SSW swell out of 201 º  at 3.0' and it was 3' to 4' starting out with really nice shape, getting a bit wonky... S o, we all know where "Donnyland" and "Annaland" are, but let's hope you haven't f...

Well if you believe the cams this morning it's going t be a pretty good day for surf no matter where you decide to dip in.  But here are the stats: 8 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies. Winds are offshore by 2 to 5kts and the sea surface is smooth. The air is 64.0 º. The water is 67.5 º. We went to Brundage Mountain for a concert (#1.) and had to reorient ourselves to this vista without snow.  We were remarking on all the spots where we had fallen in front of all of the folks on the balconies… Back in town tomorrow morning… ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

New Foam Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Nothing quite like getting a new board.  Just ask Jodi and she can tell you!  Early reports said it was an 8' Easy, but upon further inspection it's definitely an 8' Jodi.  Now we'll have to see if the surf gods treat her like the rest of us and render the surf flat for the next week or two… Partly cloudy with 12 miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 2 to 4th and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp s 63.0 º and the water is 67.8 º, effectively making a mockery of global warming.  Low tide was at 7:00am +2.3' and high tide follows at 2:50pm +4.6'.  We have a SSW swell it of 211 º at 2.3' and it's 2' to almost 3' at most spots. We'll be heading back on Monday and plan to be in the water on Tuesday!  Maybe Jodi's board will be ready?  Do they make 9'6" Jodi's? ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
