Lost Boys & Co... M arch came in like a lion and is now leaving like a turkey or maybe a manatee.  Not quite sure... Lost Boys & Co... O ne of the pleasures of giving folks surfing lessons is being part of that initial stoke that they show when they get those first waves.  Boris Vishnevsky, has lived in Hermosa Beach for 12 years and finally decided it was time to try surfing.  That in itself is a bit strange since he was a competitive swimmer in his prep days and a lot of those guys gravitate toward surfing pretty early.  We decided he should get the full experience, so we started by checking it out... H azy sun this morning and about 12 miles visibility.  Winds were calm to 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 66.3˚ and the water was 62.2˚.  Low tide was late at 11:22am +0.4' and high tide will follow at 6:28pm +3.5'.  We have a 3' SW swell that's not quite hitting us square at 220˚ and it's 2' to 3' and wally-crashy...  Supposed to be a NW combo on the way for tomorrow, so it will be here on Sunday... N o report yesterday because the %$#@-ing cable was out.  Finally got the thing fixed and now everything is right with the world...  Just like at Brother's with Iv... wait that's not Ivan at the front!  That's OSCAR!  And who's at the grill?  Damn, it's Ivan!  Yoshi must be calling for reinforcements!  Anything could happen now... M eanwhile on the sand we have 20+ miles visibility and clear skies.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 64.3˚ ramping up to a pretty warm day and the water was 63.3˚.  Low tide was at 9:57am +0.4' and low tide will follow at 5:03pm +3.2'. We have a SW swell out of 225˚ at 3.0' and it's 3' with some fatter ones on the outside.  A beautiful day in and out of the water! W e always like to scoop the real blogs with cool art and products and this is no exception!  What we have here is both,  a one-of-a-kind sculptural piece that has been adapted to charge your cell phone(s.)  Executed by Steve "Birdie" Burdette and adapted by Ronnie Garcia, it suggests Jackson Pollack's flair for the random and thrilling use of color.  NOT cast, it is built from a tar paper substrate a drop at a time!  This process can take months and when the proper thickness is achieved Garcia uses his skilled eye to isolate each individual piece.  He must consider color, clarity, shape and size.  Obviously, each piece is unique.  They will be available for a limited time only at Brother's Burritos, 24 11th St. Hermosa Beach, CA.  ($375 and they will ship anywhere.) T hanks to all of the folks who responded with condolences to our announcement of Ken Norris' passing.  We include a little montage of some of the pics that Ken had prominently displayed in his home.  He often told us how much he liked the photo of Gen and him in the Tiki Bar and often mused that he could have been in the islands and no one would have known the difference!  In answer to a few questions, he spent his working career as a rep for Rolls-Royce jet engines.  Until a couple of years ago the airlines regularly called him to certify planes they were pulling out of mothballs.  He made it a practice of test flying everything he certified (something many reps won't do!)  He and Gen met in a walking class at Torrance Beach after his wife had passed.  They had no children and he was looking for some healthy activity.  They were together for fifteen years!  In the last few years he had suffered from advanced Chronic-Ob...

I t is with profound sadness that we must convey the passing of Ken Norris, long-time companion of Grandma Genevieve, Saturday evening March 21st.    E ighty-nine years old, Ken was born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII.  He worked for AVRO Aviation in Canada and did mapping and high altitude and cold weather testing on early jets.  His stories were the kind of thing that legends are made of and he often was at his post in the Tiki Bar reminding us of the kind of men that went before us. A true Lost Boy, he introduced the crew to the wisdom of the properly constructed rum & Coke® and remained a devotee until the very end.  He drove until the day before he passed and struck fear into the hearts of pedestrians, the constabulary and other drivers. T here will be a proper ceremony in about a month and we'll let you know when that will be taking place.  Until then, hoist a glass with ...

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a little high-tide, vernal equinox, more than half-way through the school year impromptu dance.  We feature Kris Hall, Emma Waldinger and Hali Honea... H azy sun this morning, giving way to a perfectly temperate day.  12 miles visibility, despite the marine humidity.  Winds were offshore by 3.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp at checkout was 58.5˚ and the water was 63.0˚.  High tide was at 9:09am +5.9' and it will drop about a foot an hour until low tide at 3:32pm -0.9'.  We have a nice strong SSW swell out of 206˚ at 3.3' and the surf is 3' to 4', with some nice strong sets.  If you had the magic ticket this morning, like Ché, you got some long roping lefts.  If you didn't have the magic ticket (like the rest of us,) you got to watch and hope you learned something...
