Thanksgiving Eve Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Here we have Laurie Armor (#1) at Baja Hermosa Malibu building up some real speed to make this excellent corner.  So often we dis Hermosa as being walled up and impossible, but when it's on there can be some really great waves.  This session about  week ago demonstrated how good it can get... After all that buildup it's foggy this morning with barely a quarter mile visibility.  Hard to tell if it's drizzling or raining or just foggy.  Winds are light out of the NW by 3kts and the sea surface is obscured.  The air is 60.0º and the water is 59.9º.  High tie is at 6:29am +5.5' and low tide will be at 1:23pm +0.5'.  We have a south swell out of 188º at 2.3' and it's 2' when you can see it... CHECK IT OUT! Today, Wednesday the 27th we'll be having our own private showing at the VEFA Art Gallery for the "Art Of Surf" exhibit.  Suzi will be our guide and docent and fill us in on all of the particulars.  Tour starts a...

Lost Boys & Co... "Mr. Style" himself, here (#1) we have Brendan Simmons at Hermosa Malibu in perfect trim.  Look at those hands, matador like, preparing to execute a perfect Veronica.  Another half step and he will achieve maximum velocity and leave the minions on the beach cheering and jumping up and down.  Huzzah! Overcast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Light winds out of the south by 2 to 3kts with a calm sea surface.  The air and water are both 59.0º.High tide was at 6:08am +5.3' and low tide will be at 12:50pm +1.0'.  It's a west swell out of 260º at 2.6' and it's 2' to 3' with a few sliders coming through when you least expect. CHECK IT OUT! Tomorrow, Wednesday the 27th we'll be having our own private showing at the VEFA Art Gallery for the "Art Of Surf" exhibit.  Suzi will be our guide and docent and fill us in on all of the particulars.  Tour starts at 1pm and will probably last about an hour.  Tell your surf bud...

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, here it comes...  You've either been loving it or dreading it.  The Christmas/Holiday season!  In Hermosa, they've already started to grow the Christmas tree (#1) at the entrance to the pier.  We asked if budgetary cuts had diminished the size of the tree, but they said "No, it takes a minute for it to grow!"  What there won't be is a berm!  We have it on good authority that they won't be building a berm for this year's winter season.  Apparently it hasn't proven particula rly useful in the past , but we can only imagine that there are dozens of disappointed kids who are now putting their sand sliding gear away.  Hey, maybe it'll snow and you can slide down Pier Ave!! O vercast this morning and about 7 miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 4kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 54.0º and the water is 58.3º.  High tide was at 5:46am +5.0' and low tide will be at 12:13pm +1.6'....

Lost Boys & Co... W hen the waves are small you have to make yourself r-e-a-l-l-y tiny to fit in just right and get the max amount of trim.  (#1) Here we have the ever popular Burnsy getting small and making the most of this inside grinder.  She persisted, making it all the way to the sand and stepping off to victory. M eanwhile winds were out of the south this morning, before they turned offshore for about an hour.  They bumped the surface and didn't help the shape any.  They dropped the water temp from 59.2º to 57.9º and it didn't help that the air was a balmy 45.5º.  Low tide was at 8:57am +3.2' and high tide will follow at 2:03pm +4.3'.  It's a SW swell out of 230º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4' and required a bit of patience to make it work... T he VEFA Art Gallery will be open Saturday the 23rd for an artist talk and meet and greet!  The artist is Jud Hogan and his photography features low angle, freeze motion techniques of oceanscapes.  It...

Lost Boys & Co... W e had some standouts in the South Bay Scholastic Surfing Association's "Kickoff Classic."  Especially the Familia's own Milly Hostman (#1) who got 1st place in the Women's Longboard Division.  Coach Avery sent this out: "After seven days of competition over nine weeks, we had the finals of the Kick-Off Classic in challenging, waist-to-chest-high waves.  We had an amazing contest, with many athletes reaching the event's finals.  Below are the highlights: Congrats to freshman Milly Horstman for winning the Women's Longboard Division! In Men's shortboard, Dylan Morrisroe lost in a heartbreaker with 30 seconds left to secure 2 nd  place out of 160 athletes.  Devon Russell had an amazing contest taking 4 th  overall. In Men's Longboard, Coco Buffagni had his best contest as a Sea Hawk finishing 3 rd  overall, and Dylan Morrisroe finished in 6th.   In Women's Sh...

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have Ginny, the "Queen of All that's Chocolate"(#1), blasting her way to the pier at a great rate of speed.  She even got a bit of a cover-up at the end there and managed to miss the swimmer by a fin.  She also missed the pier, but it wasn't for lack of trying... M eanwhile, despite what the buoy was telling us the surf was rather wild this morning.  Skies were clear and the sea surface was lightly buffeted by a 1 to 3kt offshore breeze.  The air was chilly at 45.0º and the water didn't feel that much warmer at 59.7º.  Winter's coming early.  Low tide was early at 5:16am +3.2' and high tide is at 11:30am +5.4'.  It's a 2.0' swell out of the west at 270º and it blew up to a solid 4' with some edgy walls that weren't exactly friendly. T he finals of the South Bay Scholastic Surf League's "Kickoff Classic" will be tomorrow starting at 6:30 at 26th St. in Manhattan.  Always a great contest to wat...

Head Dip Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S ince we're out of the water until at least January, we decided we'd borrow Brendan's camera and snap a few standout maneuvers!  With this crew it was easy to do.  Let's start out with Brendan and this sexy head-dip to victory (#1).  Had all of the swimmers hopping up and down and cheering!  Thanks for the opportunity Brendan! 15 miles visibility under hazy fall skies.  Winds were light offshore 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth to the touch.  The air was a chilly 48.0º and Anto (the poet-lifeguard) read the temps in front of the crew and it was 59.0º.  High tide at 10:34am +6.1' and low tide will be at 6:25pm -0.5'.  It's a west swell out of 268º at 3.0' and it was a fun 3' to 4' with, Christiano, Brendan, Burnsy, Capt. Donaldo, Laurie, Ginny and a late Doc bringing up the rear! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Monopoly Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... This weekend saw some tides over the 7' mark which is pretty high for the South Bay (#1).  Today tides back off with a +6.6' tide at 9:489am and a low of -0.9' at 5:26pm.  Get your clam diggers on and see what's out there...  Visibility is pretty much unlimited and skies are clear.  Winds are offshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface is smooth.  It was a chilly 47.9º at checkout and 60.3º in the water.  We have a west swell out of 264º at 2.6' and since it's right in our wheelhouse, it was 3' to 4' and pretty fun by all accounts... Our hero Christiano Von Stutzcanhang, made it all the way to the semis in the Pismo Beach "Surfing for Hope" WSL sanctioned event.  He got first in all of his heats until the waves stopped cooperating in the semi final.  One of the commentators admitted that Christiano is one of the most feared surfers on the tour.  Everyone breathes a sigh of relief if they don't have to surf against him....

Floating Feather Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Blowin' like crazy this morning! 10 to 15kts out of the west gusting to near 20.  Victory at sea whitecaps.  Lots of moisture in the air, cutting visibility down to 15 miles.  The air was a wind aided 48.3º this morning and the sea temp is 671.0º.  Wind will probably drive it down a bit.  High tide is really high at 7:49am +7.1' and low tide follows really low at 2:53pm -1.3'.  Could be a interesting walk on the beach later... We grabbed this from Coach's e-mail: In challenging, Hermosa Beach walls (Wednesday,) (Photo #1) we had another successful contest with many Redondo surfers advancing to the next round.  We are hoping to wrap up the contest next week.  Below are the standouts: Women's Shortboard Round 2: 2 nd  Place: Abby Bosse Women's Longboard Semifinals: 2 nd  Place: Soryn Preston Milly Horstman Men's Longboard Round 2: 1 st  Place: Dyla...

Urchint Care Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... B ack in the late 90's or whenever the Lost Boys headed down to Saladitas early on, we surfed Santa Margarita Bay outside of the Eden Resort.  Actually a few years ago Christian, Max and the Professor surfed it.  It's a left that breaks right on the jagged outcropping on the way to Majahua.  The rocks there are loaded with urchins.  Even if you brushed against them you got stuck.  So Rip was surfing close to the rocks and lost it on a bottom turn.  He hit the rocks with his ass and got pin-cushioned with some of those sharp brittle purple spikes and by the evening he was writhing in pain.  He had his medical kit and with a pair of cotton pliers the Professor, nee doctor Paine, began removing the spines.  SeaWolf held the torch and GoGo helped keep up everyone's spirits with a play by play accounting.  Here (#1) we have Rip's very white ass under the knife... C ool this morning at 49.3º and the water is holding at 60.3º....

Lost Boys & Co... H onestly, stitches would have been fine!  But there was a sale...  Let this be a warning to you, surf for 60 years and your neck pays the price (#1).  Hope this isn't too gross...  The fade haircut is boss though... C lear skies and 20 miles visibility.  Winds offshore 3 to 5kts and a smooth sea surface.  Air was 55.6º and the water is 60.3º.  High tide at 6:41am +6.4' and low tide at 1:21pm -0.2'.  A week of some minus tides coming up (or down as it were.)  A west swell out of 260º at 3.6' and it was a solid 3' to almost 4'. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... We're back!  Bent but not broken… Another beautiful Southern California day.  20miles visibility and wind out of the northwest at 10 to 15kts.  The sea surface is predictably jumbled with some attendant chop.  The air was 54.9 at checkout and the water is 60.6.  High tide is at 6:09am +5.8' and low tide is at 12:34pm +0.6'.  It's a WSW swell out of 259degrees at 3.9' and it's a complicated 3' to 4'.  Maybe better mañana if the wind lays off!  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

An Old World Order Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... L adies and Gentlemen!  We're saying take a deep breath, relax and go surf a few.  Like Anupa here yesterday. (#1)  Been hectic for this campaign season and we all need a break.  Maybe our overloaded text messages will decrease by a significant number now. T he good news is that the internet has calmed down enough for us to get some photos downloaded and check on the local conditions.  15 miles visibility this morning under a few high clouds.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 52.3º and the water is 60.6º.  One tide today, a high at 10:41am +5.4'.  It's a WSW swell out of 255º at 2.6' and it jumped to 3' to 4' in the sur f line . T he next heats of the Kickoff Classic ran this morning with some good results for the Redondo Seahawks in the Men's Shortboard division!  Check out those who advanced: 1st:  Devon Russell, Dylan Morrisroe 2nd: Rylan Gracie, Soren...

Lost Boys & Co... Fabulous day for the internet to go batshit (auto correct was adamant that it should be "battleship") crazy.  At least you could argue that there is something newsworthy.  We are nauseously optimistic that this will all be settled soon...  Beautiful day here in LaLa land!  Sunny and warm it was 51.5º at checkout and the water is 59.9º dipping into the 50's for the first time since we almost had a summer.  Winds were steady offshore 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  High tide was at 9:58am +5.7' and low tide is at 6:03pm (in the dark!) +0.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 2.6' and it was 3' to 4' and a bit walled but still looked accommodating. The internet wouldn't let us download today's photos, which are actually pretty good.  Again more battleship crazy electronic noise.  So this (#1) is one from yesterday and a fine cutback by Christiano himself.   Vote or you can't complain!    ✠ ✠ ✠ "W...

All Of The Saints Friday Surf &Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A beautiful clear morning as we stare into the abyss.  There it is friends, the Abyss (#1) or the cesspool of the Pacific.  Two things that stood out for us:  1) How high the tide was this morning.  It's a 6'.0" tide at 9:10am but it looks even higher than that.  Cutting some nice scallops on the berm.  2) How far the outfall is from the surf line.  You might recall that last year the outfall was right on the surfline.  Now it's a good 40' from the water! Low tide is at 4:08pm +-0.0'.  This suggests to us that the Amphidromic Point was right about  1:02pm...  We were kinda hoping you'd ask about the Amphidromic Point mostly because we just learned about it from our tidal expert Anupa.  Here: "An amphidromic point, also called a tidal node, is a geographical location where there is little or no difference in sea height between high tide and low tide; it has zero tidal amplitude for one harmonic constit...
