Kelvin Floats A Big One Surf & Culture Report
Lost Boys & Co...
The groms were out at Hermosa this morning showing off their stuff (#1). There are some great prospects out there. They make the conditions look good and shoulder high! These kids go to Hermosa Valley Middle School and they're being shepherded by Yani Lange an outstanding waterman and enthusiastic coach. Yani is a great Redondo supporter and always encourages his charges to check out the Seahawks!
The waves were great for the kids and the conditions were great except for that rising tide. It was partly cloudy burning off early and the winds were light offshore. The sea surface was smooth. The air temperature was 60.0º and the water is holding at 72.9º. A Kelvin floated high tide (#2) was at 9:51am +6.8' and the low tide will be at 5:03pm -0.8'. It's a 3.0' swell out of 208º and it was like Photo #1, breaking pretty close to the sand.
The tide(s) raise some perplexing questions. We heard a number of the business owners complaining about the water, the city's response and their inability to get insurance. So, we're not sure who the lease holder(s) are but the specter of the rising ocean has been documented for some time. The rising sea level is a fact. So why do people build right on the edge and wonder why things like this happen? Did the city say that they shouldn't worry? Insurance companies don't typically take bad bets. Did they warn the people seeking insurance of the risks? Maybe you factor in the price of constant rebuilding (kinda like Malibu) and carry on...
We shot a short video down on the boardwalk and will try to send it in a separate e-mail!
