Lotta Thatch Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Here (#1) we have the Professor standing in the doorway of this rural structure in Shirakawa-go.  We were taken by the thickness of the thatch making up the roof.  In this building it was around 18" thick and had some emerald moss hanging from the edges.  We immediately though "Tiki Bar!"  Well, the good news is that it can last up to forty years.  The bad news is that it's pretty hard to find the quality and amount of thatch that we'd need for the project!

I'd like to personally thank all of the people who contributed to the Snap-Raise project to fund the surf team.  I usually try and send out a more personal note, but you know that once you get installed in a program and press the "send" button it broadcasts your requests everywhere.  That being said, I can tell you that it means a lot to the kids to get this kind of support.  Unlike football or basketball that have sizable budgets, surfing gets by on what we can raise.  Thanks for your past donations and however you choose to support the team this year.  You're beautiful!

The first 16 heats of the South Bay Scholastic Surf Kickoff took place yesterday and Redondo did pretty well.  There are 16 more heats in the shortboard division and then Girls Shortboard, Girls Longboard and Boys Longboard.  It's the biggest contest on the west coast (and maybe in the galaxy) and takes a couple of weeks to get through.  Standouts for the Redondo team were:

1st Place:

Dylan Morrisroe
Jackson Owens
Stone Erikson
Charlie Lentz
Kai Thomas (Highest heat total for Redondo 11.83)

2nd Place:
Liam James
Lucas Kislinger
Zach Shore
Owen Ryan
Nico Bobo

3rd Place:
Dylan Sunderman
Jackson Pascual

Another brilliant morning with 20+ miles visibility under clear skies.  Calm winds and smooth sea surface.  The air was a brisk 56.9º and the water is 65.7º.  High tide is scheduled for 10:00am +5.9' and low tide follows late at 5:14pm +0.2'.  It's a SW swell out of 230º at 3.0' and it was 1' to 2' with some crashy three footers on the sand.

It's relatively easy to make things look good from the outside, but we were impressed that behind the scenes things were likewise well considered.  (#2)  The supports in this farmhouse were typical of the structural integrity and attention to form following function that we saw in most of the structures we were in.  Even though it's a farmhouse, the rope work looks like an art installation.

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it"
The Professor!!
