El Furioso Friday Surf & Culture Report

Some craziness in the surf this morning.  We've pictured Sheamus Swift (#1) riding this foamy comber midway to the beach.  Winds were onshore and mercifully let up a bit during the morning starting out at 10 kts and calming to 5. The air was 54.3 and the water is 57.9 and might drop a bit with this wind.  High tide was at 9:08am +5.6' and came all the way over the bike path in some spots.  Low tide is a -0.5' at 3:24pm.  It's a straight west swell out of 260 at 6.2'.  It was 5' to 8' on the outside and really tested all of the competitors out there. 

Redondo beat a combined West/South Torrance squad in maxing 6 to 8 footers.  It was a challenge to just get out and there was at least one broken board in the fracas.  Some of the standouts were:

In Guanajuato you have to visit the "Mummy Museum." (#2)  The soil in Guanajuato is so rich in minerals that they mummify any animal remains buried there.  Even through the wooden coffins the bodies just desiccated and were preserved by the soil.  The reason they dug these folks up, was that in Mexico you used to RENT your plot.  If it wasn't paid, for whatever reason, they dug you up to make room for a paying customer.  You can imagine their surprise when the corpses were found to be basically mummified.  Some of the bodies were relatively recent, dying in the 40's and 50's and being exhumed in the 70's.  Since they weren't wrapped like Egyptian mummies, they were in the clothes they were buried in, making for some bizarre Betelgeuse-like results.  Not enough that you had clean underwear, then they put you on display.

W hen you"re on the road essential services are sometimes at a premium.  Take the case of Cat Simmons who had scheduled a skin cancer surgery only to have a surf trip come up and whisk him away.  But no worries!  Here at our "Mobile Auxiliary Surf Hospital" (M.A.S.H.) our anesthesiologist Dr. Souther and head surgeon Prof. Dr. Paine went right to work! (#1)  An outpatient procedure, he was back in the water for the afternoon session.  A biopsy revealed that instead of being cancerous the lesion was a bit of frijolé from breakfast.  Better safe than sorry, we say. 10 miles visibility under mostly clear skies this morning.  Winds were off by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface was brushed smooth.  The air was 45.0º and felt like 32, while the sea temp was 57.7º and felt just like that.  High tide was at 10:51am +4.9' and low tide follows at 5:47pm +-0.0'.  It's a west swell out of 262º at 2.6' and it was an amazing 3' to 5...

Teach A Fish To Fly Friday Surf & Culture Report

Wouldn't it be nice to have some surf to report about?  The simple answer is "yes."  But, and it's a big BUT, we're going to forge ahead and give you the particulars anyway.  5 miles visibility and pretty hazy conditions although it looks like the sun is trying to melt the haze.  Winds were offshore by 1 to 3kts. and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp was 64.5º and the water is 65.8º.  High tide is at 10:14am +5.6' and low tide follows at 4:55pm +0.6' (Maybe good for a walk on the hard sand.  Don't step on a bee.  Been lots of them on the shallow sand.)  SSW swell out of 206º at 2.3' and it was half of that on the beach.  Just to whet your appetite we've included this shot of the Professor in Nicaragua at "Soupbowls", or "Chicken Soup", or "Noodles".  They were all lefts... On A Wing & A Bone Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

H ere, (#1) we have our own naturalist, biologist and published author Anupa Asokan with what appears to be the first ingredient of a huge pot of turtle soup.  NO!  THAT'S NOT TRUE!!  What she's holding is a bucket of newly hatched turtles on their way to be released as the moon comes up over the water.  The local community is doing their best to restore the turtle population and sustain some of the endangered species. 5 miles visibility today with a light overcast and some smoke from the Hughes Fire north of Castiac.  It's really affecting the sunset tonight.  Winds were offshore most of the day, 1 to 3kts and the sea surface has been smooth.  The air was 46.0º and the water is 58.3º.  Basically one low tide today at 11:21am +1.2'.  There's a west swell out of 260º at 2.6' and it was a solid 2' and breaking in block long cylinders.
