Happy Kwanza Friday Surf & Culture Report

We were working at Cal State Dominguez Hills and  Maulana (Ron) Karenga was lecturing there.  He gave the background of Kwanza which came predominantly from the harvest festivals of Western Africa (where a significant number of slaves to this country came from.).  It goes from December 26 to January 1 and ends in a feast.  Every day in the seven day period they celebrate a Kwanza principle.  The principles are:  Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity and Faith.  They have a candelabra like a Menorah and the candles symbolize the seven principles.  If we all held those principles the world would no doubt be a better place, so let's today start by sharing our unity as a surf familia and embrace those other qualities as well…

And Christmas!  Hope you all had a great day and an opportunity to get together with family and friends to celebrate the holiday.  Thanks to Jah Morgan who started our Secret Santa event!  It's one of those things we look forward to throughout the year.  Like, we can't let this go!  (#1)

Ten miles visibility this morning under threatening skies.  Rain abounds.  Winds are out of the SSE at 9 to 12kts and the sea surface is rolling.  The air temp is 60.0 and the water is 62.6.  Low tide was at 7:26am +2.4' and high tide will follow at 12:53pm +3.9'.  It's a WSW swell out of 257deg true at 6.6' and it's 5' to 7' with Hermosa looking pretty wild.  Sapphire is probably the most organized, so catch it before it deteriorates!

W e talked about how much building is going on in China.  There are so many new bridges across the Yangtze that they haven't named them all yet!  There are between 50 and a hundred going up between Yichang and Chongqing alone.  In our first photo, the bridge and road are so new that the road crosses the bridge and then doesn't go anywhere!  We watched them welding the superstructure in #2 and to our amazement we watched a guy put on a belt with eyes on the hips and get hoisted up a couple of hundred feet to near the top of this tower.  No nets, no additional straps, no hat - just flying there with a portable welding rig, sparks flying.  We actually saw guys spot welding stuff without dark glasses!  There are some tough guys up there!  Dude, you like gotta have a hat... A beautiful morning, with a few big clouds bumping along and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started onshore from the crack and they were light at checkout...

Sometimes On Friday/Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... G reat group at Siblings Burrito Palace this morning! (#1)  Caroline joined us all the way from Atwater to catch a few gray ones. C loudy and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the south by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.0 º and the water was 61.5 º .  Low tide was at 8:26am -0.6' and high tide follows at 4:00pm +3.4'.  SSW swell out of 202 º at 2.6' and it was 3' and some sharp little gray grinders... S mall surf doesn't have to mean lousy surf.  Here (#2) we have Sheamus Swift showing what you can do when you put your mind to it.  Sheamus got first place in the longboard division against Mira Costa on Thursday! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Red Car Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

T here's a spot outside of about 14th St. that they call "Cable Cars."  It only breaks when it's huge and then it might almost qualify as a tow-in spot.  So to begin with it should be called "Red Cars" because that's what they sank there to create an artificial reef.  The Pacific Electric Railroad was going the way of the dinosaurs and they had all of these Red Cars gathering dust.  They sank a bunch of these, in what could be considered a relative underwater desert, then monitored the reef to see if it attracted fish.  Well it did and it inspired J.G. and his crew to consider larger more stable reefs.  It wasn't long before worms ate away most of the wood, but for years the steel wheels looked like pick-up-sticks on the bottom. W e could have used a reef this morning, or more accurately a swell. It was partly cloudy and visibility was 10 miles.  Winds were out of the south 1 to 3kts freshening to 15kts by noon.  Lots of bump...
