Munching in Munchkin Land Monday Surf & Culture Report

No, that's all wrong!  We'll be munching in Munich as we begin our tour of Southern Germany over the next few weeks.  The report will be sporadic, but we'll try to fill you in on the high points (some of which will be in the Alps.)  But first...

A beautiful clear morning with 15+ miles visibility and not a cloud in the sky.  Winds were light offshore 2 to 4kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air at checkout was 48.9º and the water is holding at 64.6º.  High tide was at 5:49am +5.9' and low tide will be at 12:43pm +0.1' setting up for some afternoon minus tides the rest of the week.  It's a pounding WSW swell pout of 2561º at 3.3', but it's bigger in the surfline with some outsides at 6'.  Take a look at this left that Jackson Owens snagged (#1).  You had to be patient but there were some zippers...

W e talked about how much building is going on in China.  There are so many new bridges across the Yangtze that they haven't named them all yet!  There are between 50 and a hundred going up between Yichang and Chongqing alone.  In our first photo, the bridge and road are so new that the road crosses the bridge and then doesn't go anywhere!  We watched them welding the superstructure in #2 and to our amazement we watched a guy put on a belt with eyes on the hips and get hoisted up a couple of hundred feet to near the top of this tower.  No nets, no additional straps, no hat - just flying there with a portable welding rig, sparks flying.  We actually saw guys spot welding stuff without dark glasses!  There are some tough guys up there!  Dude, you like gotta have a hat... A beautiful morning, with a few big clouds bumping along and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started onshore from the crack and they were light at checkout...

Sometimes On Friday/Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... G reat group at Siblings Burrito Palace this morning! (#1)  Caroline joined us all the way from Atwater to catch a few gray ones. C loudy and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the south by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.0 º and the water was 61.5 º .  Low tide was at 8:26am -0.6' and high tide follows at 4:00pm +3.4'.  SSW swell out of 202 º at 2.6' and it was 3' and some sharp little gray grinders... S mall surf doesn't have to mean lousy surf.  Here (#2) we have Sheamus Swift showing what you can do when you put your mind to it.  Sheamus got first place in the longboard division against Mira Costa on Thursday! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Red Car Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

T here's a spot outside of about 14th St. that they call "Cable Cars."  It only breaks when it's huge and then it might almost qualify as a tow-in spot.  So to begin with it should be called "Red Cars" because that's what they sank there to create an artificial reef.  The Pacific Electric Railroad was going the way of the dinosaurs and they had all of these Red Cars gathering dust.  They sank a bunch of these, in what could be considered a relative underwater desert, then monitored the reef to see if it attracted fish.  Well it did and it inspired J.G. and his crew to consider larger more stable reefs.  It wasn't long before worms ate away most of the wood, but for years the steel wheels looked like pick-up-sticks on the bottom. W e could have used a reef this morning, or more accurately a swell. It was partly cloudy and visibility was 10 miles.  Winds were out of the south 1 to 3kts freshening to 15kts by noon.  Lots of bump...
