Impossible Major Appliances Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I s an air conditioner considered a major appliance? L ooked like an excellent day in the South Bay this morning.  Lola on the other hand was getting off the mountain (#1)after shusbooming down the mountain and  keeping up wid  da boys.  Low was 54.5 and it was about 57 at checkout.  The water was 58.6 and let's hope a little sunshine brings it back up to the 60.0 mark.  Low tide was at 8:17am +0.62' and high tide was at 2:39pm +2.46' which is a mere bump.  It's a west swell out of 275 at 2.3'.  Ankle biters my dear Watson… Snow mañana, so we'll be keeping track of the weather and let you know how the rest of the world winters! Tomorrow Land Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... O nce again we have ventured the frozen or semi-frozen north to do some sliding around on the snow.  But the surf still calls and here's what we gleaned from our mostly reliable sources on the ground. S even miles visibility under cloudy skies with some evidence of rain.  Winds are onshore, scheduled to get fierce during the day, 7 to 10th at checkout.  The air temp was 48.0 and the water is 60.4.  High tide was at 9:55am +5.2' and low tide follows at 4:19pm -0.2'.  It's a west swell out of 272 at 5.6' and that translates to 6 to 8' and trying to find organization among the chaos… B ack to curling before it disappears for four years. Big & Wild Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Y esterday...  Yesterday might have been the best day we've ever seen at the Avenues.  Not the biggest, mind you, but absolutely the best consistent shape we've ever seen.  It immediately brought to mind Puerto Escondido and the tubing shorebreak that it's famous for.  (#1.) Was Second Pole Burnout and there were probably 15 guys out.  Despite the horrid water quality there were just some folks who couldn't let it go... T hat was  yesterday.   Today, after a night of winds sometimes reaching almost 50mph, the ocean is stormy and wild.  The good news is that it's chewing up the beach at a rapid rate, scalloping the berm (#2) and you could almost see some of the sand bars it was creating.  Despite the wind the air temperature was 51.0 º  and the water is 60.8 º .  High tide was at 9:16am +5.7' and low tide will be at 3:53pm -0.6'.  It's a 11.2' west swell out of 274 º  and who knows how big some of...

Rain On A Sunny Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I f you were quick you might have seen this rainbow during a break in the rain yesterday. T en miles visibility this morning and despite the clouds, the air is crystal clear.  Winds are light offshore, west at 98 º .  The air temperature is 49.0 º  and the water is 61.2 º .  High tide is at 8:41am +5.9' and low tide will be at 3:28pm -0.8' (there have been some spectacular minus tides this last month.  Consider a beach walk when it's not raining.)  It's a SW swell out of 222 º  at 5.6' and it's a chunky 5' to 7' and full of all kinds of interesting detritus.  Spin the wheel and take your chances. T he Professor (#2) taking a chance on the #2 Corona Door. T his (#3) is what happens when you brain storm an idea and it's as good as the design that made it to the shirt.  Okay, it was  inside  the shirt.  We still want to make one of these. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Another Rainy Day & Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... N o, we weren't going to get out of the bus to check out the surf.  We could see it perfectly fine from here (#1). R ain, heavy at times, cutting down visibility to less than a mile at times.  Winds were blowing from all points depending on your location 7 to 17kts.  The sea surface is white capped.  The air temperature was 54.0 º  and the water is still 61.7 º , despite the wind and rain.  High tide was at 8:06am +5.9' and low tide will be at 3:03pm -0.9'.  It's mainly a WSW swell out of 247 º  at 4.3' building throughout the day.  Currently the waves are in the 4' to 7' range and wild and bumpy. L ast week we had a number of minus tides in the afternoon.  Took this pic of a flock of Royal Terns (#2).   In California, more common in winter than in summer. Some southward migration occurs, as the species reaches Ecuador and Argentina in winter.   They seem to be attracted to the low tides.  We...

Modern Love Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y eah well, it's Friday the 13th and we thought we'd look into the future and see what Valentine's Day might look like in 2053 (#1).  He said, "I was attracted by her Gucci helmet."  Who knew that would still be a thing! M eanwhile back on the beach, it was sunny and clear and the winds were blowing offshore.  The air was a chilly 50.0 º  but the water is STILL 62.1 º!  High tide was at 6:19am +5.2' and low tide followed at 1:44pm -0.5'.  On a west swell out of 259 º at 3.6' it was 4' to 5' in the surf and by all accounts Doc "Big Drop" Scale was the standout.  Here (#2 photo, courtesy MoMo Pier Action Photography ) he narrowly misses eviscerating the young Stutzman as he tucks into the tube.  And the tube wasn't even the best part!  On a late takeoff, he leapt into the elevator drop and made a turn that would have made Dewey proud.  Yowzah! S o Capitan Donaldo is saying get your surfing in before the big win...

Thurlow Spurr & The Spurrlows Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W hen we were in high school early in the Pleistocene Era the administration thought we needed uplifting examples of culture.  Likewise if these examples were thinly disguised religious groups, better yet.  Thurlow Spurr was a musical minister, who also represented various industrial corporations.  He represented Chrysler and toured the country flogging Darts, Furys, Imperials and yes, the Barracuda.  At least we got out of class for an hour and it inspired us to buy Fords and Chevy's... C hilly this morning at 48.3 º  with clear skies.  Winds were variable offshore at 3 to 7kts, with rolling smooth seas.  The ocean temp is holding at 62.1 º .  High tide was at 5:33am +4.9' and low tide follows at 1:16pm -0.2'.  It's a WSW swell out of 254 º  at 4.3' and it was 4' to 5' with some bigger outsides... Little Man Who Wasn't There Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... "L ast night I saw upon the stair, a little man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today,  my God I wish he'd go away! I f you look closely at photo #1, you'll see the buoy in the left upper third.  We had watched a catchable wave break within a few feet of the buoy, took out our camera-phone and as long as we had our phone out it didn't break that far out - until we put our phone away... C loudy with 7 miles visibility, but no rain after last nights showers.  Winds out of the WSW at 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was churning.  The air was 55,0 º  and the water is still, a remarkable 62.1 º .  One low tide at 12:41pm +0.2'.  The buoy is reading a 8.2' WSW swell out of 253 º .  It's breaking 8' to 10' with some waves sucking out below sand bar level and the odd spitter reeling down the beach. D own the street you could see Topaz and Sapphire (#2) a bit better organized than Hermosa.  Interesting to note how far the ...

Trtistiloquent Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... C loudy out there this morning as we gaze down the beach at Sapphire and Topaz , in that order (#1).  Maybe 10 miles visibility and the winds were offshore by 1 to 3kts.  The sea surface was sporting some texture.  The air temperature at checkout was 58.9 º  and the water is 62.4 º .  One low tide today at 11:53am +0.4'.  It's a west swell out of 270 º  at 4.6' and it's 5' to 7' in the water and showing some wild rips north and south of the pier. W hen most people get an idea, they have a light bulb.  A-aron gets an entire sun (#2)!   ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Your Journey Is Unique Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... G lad you made it through the Superior Bowl and here's hoping you picked the right boxes despite rooting for the other team... S ome good sized surf on Saturday and one of several RUHS chargers to ride the Breakwall was (#1) Stone Erikson.  He got 5 or 6 and looked good.  Jackson Owens and Nico Bobo also made it out and grabbed some almost makeable corners... P artly cloudy skies with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore 2 to 6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 53.9 º  and the water is 62.2 º.  Got a report of 64 º  water temperature from the guards paddling around the buoy.  One low tide today at 10:56am +1.1'.  It's a west swell out of 272 º  at 4.9' and it was crashing 5' to 6' trying to dig some holes in those pool table flat sand bars...  Good luck...   A t "Not Shock Box" Paul Roustan (#2) held forth Saturday evening doing some classic body painting and exhibiti...

Psychedelic Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... F our words:  Head for the hill. Y eah, the beaches are getting smacked.  No sand bars to speak of and the surf is building.  At checkout this morning we had 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were offshore 2 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.   The air temp was 57.9 º  and the water is holding at 61.7 º .  Low tide was early at 6:04am +1.4' and it was an a.m. high tide at 11:44am +3.8'.  It's a building west swell out of 265 º  at 4.6' at checkout and this afternoon it's 5' to 6'. I n an effort to make things a bit more interesting we rendered this shot (#1) of the surf this morning in our best 1968 version of psychedelia.  The black band in the middle of the pic is a 6' high wall of water from the pier to the tower at 10th.  Far out man... ✠    "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

More Thumping Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y our looking at this wave (#1) and you're thinking, "Wow, it must be pretty good!"  Well, you'd be wrong.  Lauri Armer went out and she caught two waves.  The first one closed out on her and on the second one she managed to make it to the bottom and straighten out before it closed out.  But it was a beautiful morning with 10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Winds were strong offshore between 5 and 10kts and the sea surface was textured.  The air temp was 56.3 º  and the water is 61.7 º .  High tide hits at 11:00am +4.6' and low tide will be at 5:23pm +0.3'.  The west swell is ready to kick in and currently it's 2.6' out of 273 º  west and 4' to 5' on the sand.  Let's hope this swell chews up the sand bars a bit... ✠   "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... S o, if your name is Jane Mermaid Miho, Jodi Foster Flicker, A-Aron Millstein or Big Daddy Brodhead, your 2026 custom calendar will be at Brothers ma ñana around 9:15.  M oon over Hermosa this morning (#1).  (Do you know how much time we spent trying to create an enlarged moon and then paste it on this shot of the pier?  Waaay too much!)  You can see that the skies were clear, except for that layer of dingy air out there.  Winds were offshore 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 54.9º and the water is 61.7 º .  There has been much discussion about the water temperature this year, so we decided to check last year's stats.  Sure enough, last year at this time the water was 57.7 º  and got all the way down to 54.5 º  as we slipped into March.  So you know, we're quite happy with 61.7 º .  High tide was at 10:19am +5.4' and low tide will be at 4:55pm -0.3'.  Currently we have...

Too Many Bays Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have the beautiful Hanauma Bay.  Over the years they've had to limit the number of folks they let in every day to preserve some of the integrity of the environment and it's hoped to let some of the coral that had been trampled by visitors grow back.  We saw it 50 years ago when it was still relatively unspoiled.  About 20 years ago it was probably at it's low point with vast deserts of rock and sand and little coral.  Since then they have gone all out to bring back coral and create an environment for some of the largest variety of sea life that you might see anywhere in the islands. I n and out of the foggies this morning with variable visibility, at times a hundred yards.  Wind were out of the north 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was passingly smooth.  The air temperature was 53.3º and the water was 61.9º.  High tide was at 9:40am +6.1' and low tide will be at 4:26pm -0.9'.  It's a west swell pout of 261 º ...
