Big & Wild Wednesday Surf & Culture Report
Lost Boys & Co...
Yesterday... Yesterday might have been the best day we've ever seen at the Avenues. Not the biggest, mind you, but absolutely the best consistent shape we've ever seen. It immediately brought to mind Puerto Escondido and the tubing shorebreak that it's famous for. (#1.) Was Second Pole Burnout and there were probably 15 guys out. Despite the horrid water quality there were just some folks who couldn't let it go...
That was yesterday. Today, after a night of winds sometimes reaching almost 50mph, the ocean is stormy and wild. The good news is that it's chewing up the beach at a rapid rate, scalloping the berm (#2) and you could almost see some of the sand bars it was creating. Despite the wind the air temperature was 51.0º and the water is 60.8º. High tide was at 9:16am +5.7' and low tide will be at 3:53pm -0.6'. It's a 11.2' west swell out of 274º and who knows how big some of the outsiders have been. The spray and splash was definitely as high as the pier.
Considering how much sand was being eaten away, the ocean managed to deposit a huge amount of sand all the way to the Strand! Here (#3) we have a nice berm on the bike path causing people to actually get off their bikes in the walk zone! Amazing!
