When we were in high school early in the Pleistocene Era the administration thought we needed uplifting examples of culture.  Likewise if these examples were thinly disguised religious groups, better yet.  Thurlow Spurr was a musical minister, who also represented various industrial corporations.  He represented Chrysler and toured the country flogging Darts, Furys, Imperials and yes, the Barracuda.  At least we got out of class for an hour and it inspired us to buy Fords and Chevy's...

Chilly this morning at 48.3º with clear skies.  Winds were variable offshore at 3 to 7kts, with rolling smooth seas.  The ocean temp is holding at 62.1º.  High tide was at 5:33am +4.9' and low tide follows at 1:16pm -0.2'.  It's a WSW swell out of 254º at 4.3' and it was 4' to 5' with some bigger outsides...

Some great waves by Chris, Christian, Brendan and Hans in rather trying conditions for longboarders.  Doc made a valiant effort, while Capt. Donaldo and the Professor watched from the pier.  Some good exercise and leash tension testing!  (#1) Shows Hans on one of the better lefts that came through.  (#2)  Is Chris Miller doggie-dooring a cylindrical right.  We took these with our phone and blew them up beyond recognizable imagery.

Lost Boys & Co... W e talked about how much building is going on in China.  There are so many new bridges across the Yangtze that they haven't named them all yet!  There are between 50 and a hundred going up between Yichang and Chongqing alone.  In our first photo, the bridge and road are so new that the road crosses the bridge and then doesn't go anywhere!  We watched them welding the superstructure in #2 and to our amazement we watched a guy put on a belt with eyes on the hips and get hoisted up a couple of hundred feet to near the top of this tower.  No nets, no additional straps, no hat - just flying there with a portable welding rig, sparks flying.  We actually saw guys spot welding stuff without dark glasses!  There are some tough guys up there!  Dude, you like gotta have a hat... A beautiful morning, with a few big clouds bumping along and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started onshore from the crack and they were light at checkout...

Sometimes On Friday/Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... G reat group at Siblings Burrito Palace this morning! (#1)  Caroline joined us all the way from Atwater to catch a few gray ones. C loudy and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the south by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 58.0 º and the water was 61.5 º .  Low tide was at 8:26am -0.6' and high tide follows at 4:00pm +3.4'.  SSW swell out of 202 º at 2.6' and it was 3' and some sharp little gray grinders... S mall surf doesn't have to mean lousy surf.  Here (#2) we have Sheamus Swift showing what you can do when you put your mind to it.  Sheamus got first place in the longboard division against Mira Costa on Thursday! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Adventurous Trial Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

R ead in "The Surfer's Journal", "...which retells the Homeric tale in a series of collages where it's heroes are constructed of black paper cutouts, irrevocably reimagining the aesthetic of the narrative, while asserting the universality of the human quest for self-realization through adventurous trial." ...And we merely thought we were going to go surfing (#1 The Professor, Jah, Jetski and Rasta Pete in the background.) O vercast today (why should it be any different than yesterday?) 7 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore, 1 to 3kts and the sea was more textured that it should have been.  The air temperature was 64.3 º  and the water is 67.6 º .  High tide was at 9:27am +3.8' and low tide will be at 1:40pm +2.9'.  There's a south swell (which should tell you something right there) out of 199 º  at 2.3' and it was 1' to 2' and poor.
