Would you believe that this (#1) is a Land Shark?  We didn't think so...  Would you believe that this is a Great White Shark?  Okay, so you're not falling for that...  How about a Whale Shark from a 100 meters?  Even though we identified this creature as a Leopard Shark, it was quite obvious to our staff biologist, Ms. Asokan, that this is a Horn Shark (Heterodonus Francisci).  Ms. 'Nupes lead the expedition that found this specie and allowed Ms. Burnsy to capture the image.  Maybe if it had honked...

May gray is the order of the day.  5 miles visibility and hazy atmospheric conditions.  Winds were onshore roughing up the surface and it was 57.2º in the air and 62.6º in the water.  High tide was at 6:29am +3.9' and low tide will be at 12:33pm +0.7'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 3.0' and it's 2' to 2.5' on the sand.  Since our beach scene this morning was so uninspiring, we decide to add a bit of whimsy to the view (#2)...

Lost Boys & Co... W e talked about how much building is going on in China.  There are so many new bridges across the Yangtze that they haven't named them all yet!  There are between 50 and a hundred going up between Yichang and Chongqing alone.  In our first photo, the bridge and road are so new that the road crosses the bridge and then doesn't go anywhere!  We watched them welding the superstructure in #2 and to our amazement we watched a guy put on a belt with eyes on the hips and get hoisted up a couple of hundred feet to near the top of this tower.  No nets, no additional straps, no hat - just flying there with a portable welding rig, sparks flying.  We actually saw guys spot welding stuff without dark glasses!  There are some tough guys up there!  Dude, you like gotta have a hat... A beautiful morning, with a few big clouds bumping along and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started onshore from the crack and they were light at checkout...

The House Always Wins Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W hat has this man (#1) been smoking?  Or eating?  Well, that looks like a pozole mustache!  It is pozole season and the mustaches are in... V isibility was a cool 20 miles this morning under clear skies.  Winds were light offshore 1 to 5kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air was a below-brisk 49.9 º and the water is 62.4 º .  Low tide started off the morning at 5:37am +2.1' and high tide was at 11:25am +5.1'.  It's a west swell out of 264 º at 3.0' and it held all the way to the beach (#3) with some corners for the discrete.  Conditions meshed pretty well for some good sessions. panorama, pre-sunrise, (#2) from the lifeguard headquarters to the end of PV.  Some of these winter morning make for spectacular sunrises...  A  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Red Car Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T here's a spot outside of about 14th St. that they call "Cable Cars."  It only breaks when it's huge and then it might almost qualify as a tow-in spot.  So to begin with it should be called "Red Cars" because that's what they sank there to create an artificial reef.  The Pacific Electric Railroad was going the way of the dinosaurs and they had all of these Red Cars gathering dust.  They sank a bunch of these, in what could be considered a relative underwater desert, then monitored the reef to see if it attracted fish.  Well it did and it inspired J.G. and his crew to consider larger more stable reefs.  It wasn't long before worms ate away most of the wood, but for years the steel wheels looked like pick-up-sticks on the bottom. W e could have used a reef this morning, or more accurately a swell. It was partly cloudy and visibility was 10 miles.  Winds were out of the south 1 to 3kts freshening to 15kts by noon.  Lots of bump...
