“Hi, I’m a local ocean swimmer/surfer in Hermosa and Manhattan Beach reporting active shark fishing from the pier using heavy gear and bait. This has been increasing over the past two weeks, and I’m concerned about impacts to protected great white sharks and public safety—can a warden please follow up by showing up at the Hermosa pier?”
Keep this steady, not emotional when people share it. The goal isn’t to attack fishermen—it’s to create enough consistent reporting that enforcement pays attention.
Even though we're getting a bite tired talking about the recent shark catching, we thought it would be useful to post this script for reporting shark fishing from the pier in Hermosa. Thanks to Heather Kline, swimmer and ocean advocate for coming up with this direct and simple script.

Windy this morning with an onshore breeze 3 to 5kts gusting at times, chopping up the water (#1). Mostly clear skies with 10 to 15 miles visibility. The air temperature was 58.3º and the water was 62.3º at the buoy, with tons of "By The Wind Sailors" (Valella Valella) on the beach. Let's hope they really mean warmer water is coming. Also reports of a lot of jellyfish floating through Malibu and headed south. Been years since we had them in large numbers and they're no fun. High tide was at 7:01am +4.6' and low tide will be at 1:36pm +0.0'. We've got a SSW swell turning the corner at 202º at 3.9'. It was a bumpy 3' to 4'. If the wind turns tomorrow it might be pretty good!
Coming in hot we zoomed over the SoFi stadium (#2) on our way to touch down. The traffic at the airport was insane! It took us nearly as long to ride a taxi home as it did to fly from Boise to LAX. There's only one lane out of the parking/Uber/taxi areas and you could have walked to Sepulveda faster than grabbing a cab!
