Guess who's coming to breakfast?  We were all pleasantly surprised when Ivan Fernandez (#1) and Michelle rolled up to Brother's this morning!  He's been up in Poulsbo, Washington working in the grocery biz.  He was one of the original countermen at Brother's and had an absolutely astounding recollection of customers names and orders.  Good to see they're doing so well.  He'll be back in July for the Greek Festival, so if you want to say hi you have another chance...

Not sure what you expected but it was gray this morning with almost 10 miles visibility.  Winds were light and the sea surface was a bit roiled.  The air temperature was 63.0º and the water is 64.4º.  Low tide bottoms out at 9:56am +0.8' and high tide will be at 5:01pm +4.5'.  Swell is moving around to the south, 3.6' out of 178º.  Surf was 2' to 3' and crashy.  Most likely bigger manana but direction might be a bit oblique...

Classifying Boris as a disturbance off of Mexico this morning (#2), which of course is no surprise.  But who is Cristina?  We keep predicting that global warming will send a hurricane spinning into Southern California and Boris might just be the man to do it!

The VEFA Gallery in Torrance has a new show called "Altered Familiar."  One of the standout artists was Mait֨e C̭ote֙ who depicts teddy bears wearing all manner of surfaces.  Here (#3) she's shown with her "alligator" bear.  We always hate to ask artists this question, but she allowed that each piece takes her about 2500 hours!

Lost Boys & Co... W hat has this man (#1) been smoking?  Or eating?  Well, that looks like a pozole mustache!  It is pozole season and the mustaches are in... V isibility was a cool 20 miles this morning under clear skies.  Winds were light offshore 1 to 5kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air was a below-brisk 49.9 º and the water is 62.4 º .  Low tide started off the morning at 5:37am +2.1' and high tide was at 11:25am +5.1'.  It's a west swell out of 264 º at 3.0' and it held all the way to the beach (#3) with some corners for the discrete.  Conditions meshed pretty well for some good sessions. panorama, pre-sunrise, (#2) from the lifeguard headquarters to the end of PV.  Some of these winter morning make for spectacular sunrises...  A  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Red Car Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

T here's a spot outside of about 14th St. that they call "Cable Cars."  It only breaks when it's huge and then it might almost qualify as a tow-in spot.  So to begin with it should be called "Red Cars" because that's what they sank there to create an artificial reef.  The Pacific Electric Railroad was going the way of the dinosaurs and they had all of these Red Cars gathering dust.  They sank a bunch of these, in what could be considered a relative underwater desert, then monitored the reef to see if it attracted fish.  Well it did and it inspired J.G. and his crew to consider larger more stable reefs.  It wasn't long before worms ate away most of the wood, but for years the steel wheels looked like pick-up-sticks on the bottom. W e could have used a reef this morning, or more accurately a swell. It was partly cloudy and visibility was 10 miles.  Winds were out of the south 1 to 3kts freshening to 15kts by noon.  Lots of bump...

Pecking Order Thursday Surf & Culture Report

W hat we have here (above) is Doc drawing our attention to a hapless paddler who, first, jumped in by the tower and is now somewhere near 4th St.  He then proceeded to get caught in a rip, pushed into an outside set that tested his leash and his resolve. He managed to get back in to shore, but needed a few minutes to gather himself... J umbled conditions from the winds last night and they're predicted to blow again today and this evening.  Currently its anywhere from 6 to 20kts and the sea surface is chopped up.  The air was chilly this morning at 47.5 º  and the water is 62.4 º , but that might drop with these winds.  Low tide at 6:46am +2.1' and high tide follows at 112:17pm +4.2'.  It's a blustery west swell out of 268 º  at 6.6' and it looks like about 4' to 7' with the wind knocking down some of the peaks.  Swell looks strong though and if the winds change it could be good...
