Looks Like A Wicker Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... There are two kinds of people who look at this photo (#1).  The first look at the pic and say, "Hey, that's LoLa on a beautiful meadow in Colorado."  Then there's those who say, "Isn't that the mountain range they show on the cans of Coors? (On the silver cans they turn blue when chilled!)  Stop!  You're both right! Cloudy this morning turning into bright sun and then getting cloudy again and looking like there's a storm brewing.  Winds were onshore and the sea surface was textured.  The air temperature was 58.8º and the water is 62.8º.  High tide is at 7:44am +3.6' and low tide will at 1:00pm +1.4'.  Swell is out of the SSW (209º) at 2.6', but it's doing a fine job of missing us and it's flat to 1'... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

An Happy Birthday Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A nd it's a happy birthday to Chris "Sancho" Urchita, Chris "Toph" Miller and the Professor!  Makes you wonder what was going on in late September? C loudy and quite frankly looks like rain.  Winds are onshore by 3 to 6kts and the sea surface is textured.  The air temperature is 60.1°and the water is trying at 63.1°.  5:45am +3.5' is high tide and low tide will be at 11:56am +1.0'.  We wish we had a bigger SSW swell, but it's 2.6' out of 213° and it's passing us by, leaving us with 0' to 1' mush burgers... H ere (#1) we have Burnsy and the Professor introducing Anna and Morgan's film, "To Be Frank" at the Telluride Mountain Film Festival.  It goes into general distribution tomorrow and we'll be sending out a link for you to watch it.  You might be in it, so take a look! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Then The Wind Came Up Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have Christiano Von Stutzcanhang (#1) riding this little slider near Crescent City to the excitement of the locals and curious visitors... A little  different at home with 3 miles visibility under overcast skies and winds out of the west by 3 to 4kts.  The sea  surface sported a rather heavy texture and no one seemed eager to try it out.  The  air temperature was 58.9° and the water is 62.8°.  Low tide  at 7:51am +0.0' and high tide is at 3:51pm +3.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205°at 2.6' and it wasn't even that at 1' to 2' and poor but it was the wind that put it out... B ack on Monday with the report from Colorado and some news on how to stream Anna and Morgan's film!  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Tellurium Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I s this technology or what?  We'll beheading to the home of tellurium on Thursday for another showing of Anna and Morgan's film  "To Be Frank."  Our plan is  to make  those mountaineers jealous of the beach life.  Of course we tell them we're from Venice so they don't end up surfing the south side of the pier... O vercast this morning and drizzling to beat the ban.  Visibility was less than 2 miles and objects were moist to the touch and closer than they appear in the mirror.  If that wasn't enough  the wind was light onshore and the sea surface was sporting a bit of texture.  The air temperature was 61.0° and the water is 62.2° which actually feels pretty good.  Low tide was at 6:58am -0.3' and high tide will be at 2:25pm +3.2'.  It's a SSW swell out of 206° at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' Waikiki-style and there  was Tamara  and Steve on the north side and  the Professor here (#1) at Annaland standing tall and d

Got The May Gray, High Tide, Onshore Breeze Blues Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... 2 miles visibility under heavy overcast skies.  Winds were light onshore and the sea surface is smooth to lightly textured.  The air temp was 59.8° and the water is 62.8° fine spring degrees.  High tide was at 9:40am +4.0' and low tide follows at 2:43pm +1.4'.  We have a 4.9' SSW swell out of 196° that is just missing Hermosa.  You can see that Bob Thomas (#1) wasn't all that impressed with it trying to break.  Since we'll be at 26th St. mañana, we'll let you know how things looks there! A nd why will we be at 26th St.?  For the annual Redondo vs Mira Costa surf contest!  Get your sorry ass down there to witness some damned good prep surfing and some excellent coaching as well, we might add... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Wasting Away On Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... M ustaches were in profusion at the Donovan Frankenreiter show at the latest Beachfest.  Here (#1) we have a couple of gents who fit right in... M ore than just your average overcast.  We're calling this one cloudy and 5 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air temp was 57.3° and the water is 62.4° which  would be nice if the surf would cooperate.  High tide at 8:49am +4.1' and low tide will be at 2:10pm +1.0'.  It's a SSW swell out of 200° at 3.6' and the tide would have to have been quite a bit lower to make it break...  It  needed to  break before we  could fix it... It's A Trotsky Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ow did we get to Trotsky from Lev Davidovich Bronstein?  You start looking things up and who knows what y ou find!  Like he was assassinated by being hatcheted with an ice axe.  All the more unusual when you realize he was in Mexico at the time... P ut  away the ice axe, spring (May Gray) is coming to the South Bay.  It was overcast with 5 miles visibility  and onshore winds 1 to 3kts.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 59.0° and the water is 60.6°.  High tide is at 7:54am +4.3' and low tide will be at 1:36pm +0.6'.  We  have a 4.9' SSW swell out of 200° at 4.3' and it was 3' to 5', but once again a high tide that shut things down for the most part. T he Professor's sled (#1), the ever popular "Wiggly Bus."  Mr. Wiggly just got a new clutch cable and there's nothing like crawling under a vintage VW bus for a little grease bath.  Let's see... he's got his wetsuit, surfboard, towels, shower and h

Mystify Your Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... M r. Pepper (#1) went out with great expectations, but wasn't quite expecting the shorebreak to be so ferocious!  Two out of one, a little multiplication by division... O vercast (heavy) and 5 miles visibility.  Wind was light onshore, 1 to 3kts, and  the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 60.0° and the water is  61.0°.  High tide was at 7:03am +4.3' and low tide will be at 1:00pm +0.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 200° at 3.6' and it was 3' to 5' on the outside with a gnarly shorebreak (as referenced in photo #1.) ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Mint Green Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... 10 miles visibility under hazy skies.  Light winds and smooth water surface.  The air temp was 55.4° and the water is 59.2°.  Come on 60°!  Low tide was at  10:54am -0.4' and  high  tide fills in at 4:27pm 4.4'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198° at 3.9' and it was  3' to 4' and some good longboarding waves. W hat's  better than having a pickup truck?  Having a friend who has one!  This (#1) is Tarsan's mint green ride and we can't count the number of times he's bailed out needy Familia members.  It's lots!  He rescued it from the U.S. Forest Service and it"s having more fun at the beach than it had in the forest! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Coconut Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T hese  Coconut Taxis (#1)  in Havana are  great rides, but  our surfboards kept sliding off  the tops.  If you put your  board in the back window it stuck out about 5'.  We arm carried them on the outside dreading right turns... H azy morning with 7 miles visibility.   Winds light out of the SW with a light  texture on the water.   The  air was 52.7° and the water is 58.5°.  One low tide at 9:33am -0.5'.  It's a SSW swell out of 198° at 3.9' and it was 3' to 4' and created some unique opportunities. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

We Won Wednesday (For The Time Being) Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... So in the late hours of Tuesday, the Hermosa City Council voted to rescind the 8am parking edict and opt to maintain the current 10am parking enforcement time.  A half-hearted victory since the issue has to pass again before the council.  But we're a step ahead of where we were yesterday.  Now José can park his ride until 10 and we can enjoy brekky at a less than breakneck pace...  His ride sports all of the right stuff inside and the  board and paddle ride on top!  (#1)  We'll let  you know when the issue reaches the council again... Winds out of the west this morning, lumping things up just enough to discourage most of the crew.  Tide was a minus at 8:30 and the surf was 3' to 5' and kept things interesting for those amped enough to get in he water... Do You Have A Quarter For Parking Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T onight was the City of Hermosa Council Meeting to review their edict on parking.  Were the assembled Familia members enough to make a difference?  Time will tell...  the meter is ticking... C loudy this morning and 7 miles visibility.  Winds were light onshore  and the sea surface was lightly textured.  The air was 55.9° and the water is 59.9°.  Low tide 6:12am -0.9' and high tide is at2:19pm +3.1'.  It's a west swell out of 274° at 3.9' and it was 4' to 6'  with  some standout rides from Christian Spicy and Burnsy.  The rest of us kinda watched... T he Spicy Christian, Jah Sled featuring hot and  cold running Gatorade. Towels, bags and 38 bars of Barefoot Wax.  Only turned on to go uphill...    Legally parked, by the way... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

It's Not A Mess Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Mostly sunny skies this morning with 20+ miles visibility.  Winds  were light onshore 1  to 3kts and the sea surface was textured.  The air temperature was 55.6° and  the water is trying at 59.2°.  Low tide kicked things off at 6:12am -0.9' and  high tide is at 12:58pm +3.2'.  T°here's a 200° SSW swell at 3.3' and it was 3' top almost5' and pretty good for low tide Hermosa! Everyone has their preferred set-up for  their sled.  Seats  go down, like this, bucket lives over here, towels and  wax are stowed close at hand.  This is Aaron's kit.  You know how often the length of the board is determined by the space in the vehicle... Lost Boys & Co... Nothing like a  sunny Saturday in Spring to get things started!  Surf was wonky, but  always  worth the paddle out.  Sunday looked promising, but there are a lot of broken promises out there...
