Mun (Moon) Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a pic of Mun and the Professor sharing a laugh last Monday night.  Mun bought "Halibut Corner" from Anthony, who had bought "Louey Louie's" from Dave Lechworth.  She's calling it the "Corner Pub" but we think it ought to be "Moon's Pacific Rim Café."  The crew is down there most every Monday evening at 6:15pm sharp.  Ride your bike close and it's your kind of place if you're into Mexican/Vietnamese/Korean fusion grinds. The best Bi Bim Bap east of Seoul!  Next to Naja's on the International Boardwalk, Redondo Pier. W e can't remember when we've seen this many summer days end to end.  Not even during, well... summer!  Clear skies and over 20+ miles visibility.  Winds blew offshore all morning to 6kts and the sea surface was slightly nicked, but smooth all the same.  The air temperature was 53.6˚ and the water was 59.2˚.  High tide was at 6:49am +6.7' and low tide will be at

Lost Boys & Co... Y et another beautiful summer day here in the southland...  Maybe only one thing missing... Y ou guessed it!  A bit of surf for all those kids who want to try-out their new wetsuits, diver's watches and Go-Pros!  Of course visibility is just about max at 20 miles and the skies are clear except for a few high wispy things.  Winds were out of the south east by 2.2kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 57.2˚ and the water was 59.7˚.  Low tide is at 11:54am +0.7' and high tide will follow at 5:54pm +3.2'.  We have a west swell out of 264˚ at 2.3' and it's trying hard to be 1' to 2' and surfable - but not quite yet...  Maybe mañana?... Y es, Kincaid's is on for New Year's Eve.  4:30pm and we'll watch the sun go down on the old year.  Like last year they're asking for reservations, even in the bar, but we have none and might not get around to asking for them.  We're going to walk in and order drink

Lost Boys & Co... L oLa stands at the ready on the dock behind Ruby's.  In a matter of seconds she had hit the water and was off across the harbor.  The Professor was sorry he hadn't brought his surfboard - he could have surfed on her wake... A cloudless summer day here on the morning after Christmas!  20+ miles visibility with just a bit of egg-smog on the horizontal.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was glassy, in and out of the harbor.  The air temp was 56.7˚ and the water was 59.7˚ (later in the day it got up to 63.1˚ - the warmest we've ever recorded for this date!)  Low tide was at 11:01am +1.5' and high tide will follow at 4:33pm +3.0'.  We have a WSW swell out of 254˚ at 1.6' and it's less than half that at the beach - pretty much a lake... T hanks to José, Oscar, Birdie and Fred at Mangiagli's for the great job on LoLa's standup!  Like everything else they do it was a fabulous example of their art and finest craftsmanship!  ✠ "

Lost Boys & Co... A couple of art shots of the session this morning.  Props to Coach Duncan Avery for making it TWO sessions before noon!  He was suited up before 90% of the class and then went back out to round out the morning!  It was pretty darned good.  Rasta Pete, Jimmy Thomas, The Professor, JP and JJ (and many other initials) made it out later, when things warmed up a bit... Y eah it was chilly, but a brilliant morning with 20+ miles visibility under a cloudless sky.  Winds were offshore from the crack of dawn by 3.3kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was a chillacious 45.6˚ and the water was comparative toast at 59.2˚.  High tide was fat at 9:58am +5.4' and low tide will follow for another minus at 5:12pm -0.1'.  We have a WSW swell out of 254˚ at 5.6' and it was a very good 3' to 5' with some classic faces and stellar manes off the back of some of the outsiders.  Mañana might be worth the cold... Lost Boys & Co... A couple of the shots from the AFP article on the Kombis.  There's no truth to the rumor that the table skirt comes from LoLa's hula wardrobe...  Well, not the whole truth... M eanwhile the weather has finally come through and we have 5 miles visibility under cloudy, threatening, rainy skies.  Winds were variable-on all morning to 18kts and the sea surface was bumpy early to full chop at 10am.  The air temp was 55.3˚ and the water spiked back up to 60.1˚ before the rain.  High tide is at 9:25am +5.7' and low tide will follow at 4:39pm -0.3'.  We have a west swell out of 264˚ with some south thrown in there.  It's 3.6' at the buoy and 3' to 4' in the surf line.  Some fun ones before the wind came up...   T he Redondo High surf team showed up big time and bested Peninsula 111 to 59.  Some of the outstanding first place performances: Men's Shortboard:  Heat #1:  Kyle Beatty, Heat #2:  Trevor LaShure, Heat #7:  Hudson Ritchie, Heat

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, calm down...  We only let her back it up into the garage.  She doesn't get to drive it on the road yet.  See...  She's checking the mirror! Y ou can tell the weather is changing.  This morning we had cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were full on from the west at 3.9kts and then turned around from the east just as hard.  The sea surface was chopped, then glassy, then rippled with the offshore.  The air temperature was 58.8˚ and didn't get a whole lot warmer throughout the day, a full 10˚ lower than Tuesday.  The water was 59.7˚.  High tide was at 8:54am +5.9' and low tide will be at 4:07pm -0.5'.  We had a west swell out of 262˚ at 3.3' and the waves were 3' to 4' and poor to fair. S upposed to rain mañana and dampen our fun a bit.  Redondo has a scheduled contest against Peninsula at Hermosa, depending on the weather.  AND if you haven't been keeping track you have a week to go before Christmas!  Face it, you&

Lost Boys & Co... A ye comrade!  Here we have comrade Ivanov Vladimir Perestroika Fernandezov.  He has been in this country short distance.  He has been detained for "lurking with intent to loom."  What are they going to do?  Send him to Cuba?  Ha ha ha ha ha... Lost Boys & Co... T his is the kind of a hill you find in Hermosa Beach in the middle of December.  It's supposed to be covered with snow and there's supposed to be professional snowboarders and kids sliding down the hill.  But it didn't snow when they thought it would.  That is until the snow man showed up and showed us how it was done...  The snow came from Long Beach, not exactly known for it's perfectly groomed slopes, but one of the nations great ice producers... P artly cloudy this morning with almost 20 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was a warmish 63.8˚ and the water wasn't bad at 58.3˚.  High tide was at 7:52am +6.2' and low tide will be at 3:05pm -0.6'.  We have a west swell out of 274˚ at 2.6', but it's hitting square-on and breaking 3' to 5' at the better spots and nothing at the worst spots...  Hermosa was long walls and crashy outsides.  If you're lucky, you get t

Lost Boys & Co... T he article on the Kombis came out today and our AFP correspondent Leila (Layla) Macor sent us three flavors of the composition:  English, Spanish and French.  You can take your pick, although we sound really good in French... Like this... "Nous tous, les retraités, nous avons grandi avec (le Combi) et nous sommes très nostalgiques. Tout le monde en Californie a une histoire à raconter" sur cette camionnette, ajoute son ami Mark Mitchler. Lost Boys & Co... A fter three days with no Yahoo connection the internet wonks finally thawed the lines and let the information flow.  Couldn't call the help line - the volume of calls was outrageous.  They actually hung up on us 3 times, after waiting for tens of minutes!  Couldn't write them because not having mail WAS the problem.  Their websites were useless loops of FAQs and nonsense.  So we put our top man on the problem: Tio Ted.  Last we heard he was headed for a secret communications node east of Delano...   H azy sun and 18 miles visibility.  Meanwhile the freeze-ass cold continued and it was a comparably warm 52.2˚ while the water edged closer to the air at 57.2˚.  High tide was at 5:32am +5.8' and low tide will follow at 12:36pm +0.3'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250˚ at 1.6' and it's translating to a 1' and poor wave show.  Lots of antsy surfers out there... Y ou might recall that last week the Professor locked himself out of his bus.  He

H azy sun this morning, obviously not enough to warm the frigid earth below.  We had 39.4˚ when we peeked over the covers and 41.2˚ at checkout.  The water was 59.4˚ and even though it's finally dropped below 60, it's still 18˚ warmer than the air.  Winds are also chilly out of the NE by 3.4kts and the sea surface is smooth to glassy.  Low tide is at 9:08am +2.0' and high tide will be at 2:38pm +4.0'.  We have a west swell out of 260˚ at 2.3' and it's in the 1' to 2' range and not looking good enough to get cold...! Lost Boys & Co... W e're looking at this sign and kinda chuckling and then we thought, "What else might provide such myriad benefits?"  Meditation?  Massage?  Exercise?  Nope, don't think so... D espite the frosty conditions this morning (46.4˚ at checkout) the surf was beautiful.  15 miles visibility and a few clouds bumping around up there.  Water temp is 61.0˚, keeping above the magic 60 mark.  High tide is at 10:54am +6.0' and low tide will follow at 6:09pm -0.7'.  We have a west swell out of 262˚ at 3.0' and it's reeling off at 3' to 5' at most spots.  Hermosa Pier has been going off the last two days and if you had to pick to top ten days of the year, they would be on that list! ✠  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... S o, how do you know that the holidays are fast approaching?  Ok, maybe not fast, but you know what we mean.  One way is that the elves start decorating your wheels!  Yes, this is how you say Merry Christmas in German... B rilliant morning with the wind offshore by 4.3kts, clear skies, smooth seas and 20+ miles visibility.  The air was a chilly-willy 46.9˚ and the water was comparatively warm at 60.6˚.  (You may now exercise your option to wear booties)   High tide was at 10:02am +6.6' and low tide will follow at 5:17pm -1.1'.  We have a west swell out of 261˚ at 4.3' and with the wind and the tides we have some pretty picturesque waves in the 3' to 5' range making for some fun surf riding!  Go gett'em! O ur condolences go out to Donna Ball and all of her family on the passing of her father Joe Watts.  A real character by all accounts, he played softball into his eighties, was a real card -shark and could tell a good tale!  Good on ya'
