Lost Boys & Co... H ere's Jetski on this chest high growler getting ready to fling hisself through this little tube.  He's on the "Sublime" model upping his performance by degrees... B ig windy last night!  Even though it's calm this morning with no wind, the ocean surface still has a bit of residual bump.  Hazy sun and 10 miles visibility with some chilly air at 55.9º.  Water is down again to 57.0, with the wind bumping it down.  Just when you thought it was getting warmer...  Low tide was at 8:51am +0.5' and high tide will follow at 4:19pm +3.2'.  We have a healthy west wind-swell out of 269º at 7.2' and it's 6' to 8', but dropping pretty quickly.  Should be half that tomorrow... W e were talking about the travertine deposits and the flowing falls they create.  These three shots are from a spot near Roberto Barrios (that's a village, not a person.)  #1 is the main falls and it's cascade of lace-like water that's over 50

Lost Boys & Co... S o, we're nothing if we're not into sustainability.  We got this Monterrey Pine from Danger Boy and plan to raise it to adulthood, harvest it and make a surfboard from the planks.  Obviously, this is a long term project...  Because it was from Danger Boy we have taken to calling it the Douglas "Fir" Ball...  Your emphasis will determine whether that's "Douglas Fir" or "Fur Ball." P artly cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 55.7 and the water is up one to 58.5.  Low tide was at 7:44am +0.4' and high tide will be at 2:45pm +3.1'.  We have a 5.9' swell out of 266º west and it was chest to head high this morning...  Supposed to be a bit irregular in the morning so make sure you check it out... S peaking of logging, here's some interesting lumber in the jungle west of the ruins in Palenque.  Actually a tree wi

Cut Your Toe Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H onestly, surgery in Mexico isn't always this primitive...  When Morgan Sliff went out at the point in Cardon, Mexico to make good on day 279, she had no idea that she'd take a punishing wipeout, break her leash and then cut her toe on the reef on the way back in.  Would she have gone out anyway?  OF COURSE!  And besides, how primitive can it be if they're using a smart phone for a light?  Speaking of smart phones or cell service in general, you can call from Mexico or El Salvador and call anywhere in the U.S. with crystal clarity.  But if you live in the Hollywood Riviera the reception sucks!  And god forbid you should try to call P.V.... A fter all that wind yesterday, things calmed down quite a bit.  We had 10 miles visibility with a few high clouds and the wind switched around to the east by 6.3kts.  The sea surface was smooth with only a slight roll from yesterday.  The air was a chilly 49.9 and the water dropped a couple of degrees to 57.7.  Low

Lost Boys & Co... W ith all that wind, the surf was kicked up quite a bit.  #1 broke out about 50 yards  beyond the end of the jetty.  You could have ridden it either way, but from our perspective the right looked a little better... B lowin' like a son-of-a-gun all day long.  Starting at around 10kts this morning and hitting upwards of 30 this afternoon.  Hazy sun with less than 10 miles visibility.  The air temperature was 56.9 and the water was 59.5 despite the wind.  Low tide was at 6:04am +0.4' and high tide was at 12:27pm +3.4'.  We have a west swell out of 264º at 10.2' and it was 10' to 12' with some mackers on the outer sand bars.  It'll be interesting to see what it looks like in the morning as it calms down a bit...  We're actually imagining Wednesday might be the best... W hen the Spaniards discovered Palenque, they were looking for gold.  The funerary pieces were all jade, which were considered "creek rocks" to the Spanish.  For

Lost Boys & Co...   I n China where they were uncovering the terracotta warriors, they decided to stop because when the figures are brought to the surface, their polychrome finish oxidizes and they become the flat gray we've come to recognize.  It's a bit the same at Palenque.  They've become hesitant to uncover things too quickly since they run into the same issues of oxidation and decomposition.  All of the buildings were thought to have been covered in painted stucco, but the jungle and heat takes it's toll on everything but the basic stone... A nother summer-like morning in the So. Bay with only a few high clouds to mar the blue sky and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the south by 2.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 62.7 and the water was 61.3, getting up to almost 65 mid-day.  High tide was at 9:17am +4.4' and low tide will be at 3:06pm +0.8'.  We have a 3.0' swell out of 238º SW and it was a fun 3' to

A Rather Ticklish Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e're back in town after a day at the 'bu...  Jetski is shown here letting his desires take wing...  Hot and small the 'bu still held sway with some long lines and only a few folks in the water.  One wag was heard to comment that it was the most polite crowd he'd seen in ages...  We had to agree... A nother summer day, we have hazy sun with some high clouds and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 62.3 and the water was 61.5.  High tide was at 8:42am +4.5' and low tide will be at 2:41pm +0.6'.  We have a SSW swell out of 199º at 3.0' and that was about it with a high tide bounce for your take-off assistance... A t the museum in Palenque they took great pains to make sure each piece was exhibited to it's best advantage.  As an example, this perfectly lighted sculpted head was remarkable in it's beauty and simplicity. Lost Boys & Co... T here's an absolutely fabulous museum near the entrance to Palenque.  It houses some of the artifacts that wouldn't fair so well in the elements.  Many of these treasures are made of ceramic like this stele (#1) that features an exquisitely rendered portrait of a nobleman.  Erik Von Daniken suggested that these renderings were inspired by extraterrestrials who had a hand in building Palenque and that the elaborate headdresses are really space helmets...  Might be kind of a chore to get them into the saucer... C ool and clear this morning with 15 miles visibility. Winds started up early out of the NW by 2kts and freshened to 18kts by the afternoon.  The sea surface was smooth to light chop.  The air temp was 55.6 and the water is up a couple of degrees to 60.3.  Low tide was at 11:17am +0.1' and high tide will follow at 6:19pm +3.9'.  We have a building 4.9' swell out of the west 271º and it was 4' to 5' and should get a bit bigger over

Lost Boys & Co...   A personal favorite at Palenque is the "Temple of the Foliated Cross."  Another building with an almost intact roof comb, it's symmetry, beauty and sharp angled sides give it a rather imperial look.  Run these stairs a couple of times and you feel like you've gotten your workout in... A breezy bright morning with 15 miles visibility and only a few clouds.  Winds are onshore from 3 to 12kts and the sea surface is sporting a light chop at the moment.  The air temperature is 60.6 and the water is 59.5.  Low tide is at 8:38am -0.1' and high tide will be at 3:34pm +3.4'.  We have a 2.6' west swell out of 276º and it was just about that at most beaches this morning...  You just had to find a spot out of the wind... T he tower at the end of the colonnade might appear to be slightly askew.  As the archaeologists were uncovering this portion of the building, they kept trying to reconcile the angle of the tower until they realized that it wa

Lost Boys & Co... I t is with great sadness that we report the passing of Taras Poznik, surfer, boat captain and local legend.  They are currently suggesting that he was the victim of "shallow w ater blackout," which is caused by hyperventilating before diving.  He had a spectacularly troubled youth culminating with the 2000 conviction for spearing "Big Mama."   "Big Mama" was a  50-year-old halibut that had been on display in a tank at the Redondo Beach SEALab. Attorney Laurie Belger, who represented Poznik, told the Washington Post , "I've tried over 20 murder cases in my career, and nobody cared. But you steal this fish, and eat it? I tell you, it was as if he had barbecued Bambi. People want to put him in the gas chamber."  He turned his life around after that episode and although he looked tough on the outside, by all accounts he had a heart of gold.  Jimmy Barahona is collecting money to help the family with funeral arran

Thai Pineapple Fried Rice Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how you say something like, "Thai pineapple fried rice." and then you want some... W e wished that we looked this good when we were 44.  No, wait, what we meant was, we wished we had this cake when we were 44.  No, no... wait, we meant we can't remember being 44, but can we have some cake?  Or maybe just the candles? C loudy this morning with 5 miles visibility and later rain.  Winds were calm and the ocean surface was glassy.  The air temp was 59.9 and the water is 59.4.  High tide was at 10:00am +5.3' and low tide will follow at 3:58pm -0.1'.  We have a weak SSW swell out of 210º at 2.0' and it was just about half of that and breaking on the beach... T his glyph on Temple III looks remarkably like Jetski in a meditative pose, dressed in a cool headdress and earrings... P hoto #3 is the Temple of the Cross.  A gem of a building it sports one of the most complete "roof combs" at Palenque.  Stars are aligned with spaces

Lost Boys & Co... S o, deep within the corbeled arches of this temple, Capitan Donaldo and LoLa examine some of the original stucco on the walls.  This is extraordinary because the stucco/plaster on these walls is right around 2000 years old!  Take a look at your house.  You're wondering why the aluminum siding guys and the tinted stucco folks keep cold calling.  Well, if you had just hired these Mayans you might not have to do any patching until 4016.  They don't build them like that anymore... H azy sun this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 60.6 and the water is 58.8 at the buoy and 62º at the Hermosa Pier.  High tide was at 9:12am +5.5' and low tide will be at 3:20pm -0.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 200º at 2.3', but it was better than that and despite the high tide it was a rolling 3' with some nice long glides... Lost Boys & Co... N ever wanting to travel without proper lubrication, Capitan Donaldo (a.k.a. Don Congrejo, Donny, Charles Donald Souther) suggested we stop at his namesake in Villa Hermosa...   D epending on when you were reconnoitering this morning, you either got 10 miles visibility and clear skies or fog and 50yds visibility.  Winds were off by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 59.9 and the water is inching up slowly to 58.6.  High tide was at 8:25am +5.4' and low tide will be at 2:44pm -0.5'.  We have a 3.0' swell out of 202º SSW and it was 3' to 4' with some nice little peaks along most of the beach breaks... T he great pyramid at Palenque is really pretty impressive.  It stands at the south end of the quadrangle, it's stairway facing the "tree of life."  When the Spaniards came to Palenque in the mid 17th century, the whole area was covered with forests and dense jungle vegetation.  It turns out that that was a

Lost Boys & Co... O n our way to Palenque we crossed most of southern Mexico.  Lots of amazing geography in that part of the world including several of Mexico's 10 or 12 active volcanoes.  #1 is the ever popular Popocatepetl, which erupted just last year and still has a fair amount of smoke issuing from a vent on the side.   A beautiful morning with 20+ miles visibility and calm winds with smooth seas..The air temperature was 61.9 and the water is 57.9.  High tide is at 7:36am +5.2' and low tide will be at 2:08pm -0.4' for your sea-glass picking pleasure.  We have a 3.3' swell out of 238º WSW.  It was 2' to 3' with some fatter outsides, but the tide was floating things a bit and you could get a few good faces if you were patient... #2 is Pico de Orizaba, which is considered dormant and last erupted in 1684.  Considering we're talking geographic time here, we're not counting the Pico out... #3 is an overview of the courtyard at Palenque from the eas

Lost Boys & Co... C larke & Michael introduced us to Elisha two days ago and she's already:  learning how to surf, gotten lettuce from Clarke's garden, had two meals at Brother's and destroyed public property...  We thought she was doing pretty well until she wasted the sign, now she's fabulous! 20 miles visibility under clear skies.  Winds were lightly offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was a brisk 49º early and 56.7º in the water.  High tide was early at 4:29am +4.2' and low tide will follow at 12:05pm +0.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 224º at 3.6' and it was 2' to 3' with an occasional outside.  As the swell direction moves further to the north we should get some better waves.  Check it this weekend... S outhern Mexico is well known for their fantastic fruits and vegetables.  #3 are some vine ripened papayas.  Unlike some of their northern cousins, these are creamy and sweet and don't have any stringine
