Cheek To Jowl Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... N othing like Cash... L ooks like we had to wait until fall to have summer begin , nice and warm out there with 15 miles visibility under hazy sun.  No wind and glassy conditions.  It was 73.5º at 7:00am and it just kept getting hotter.  The water is 69.6 at the buoy and warmer on the beach.  High tide was at 9:13am +5.4' and low tide will follow at 3:12pm +0.9'.  We have a SSW swell out of 198º at 2.6' and it's not that big and it's swishing about on the sand... S o we wander into Trader Joe's in the Village and we see this guy massaging the strawberries.  He's got these gray polyester slacks on that have a split up the ass.  But because he's probably headed to WalMart, he put a piece of duct tape (in approximately the same shade of gray) over the rip.  Of course duct tape and polyester don't hold.  LoLa suggested that this would be a good photo, so we whipped out our phone and took this snap.  Much to our amusement it turned o

The Autumnal Solstice Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have the sun setting on summer...  F inally, after quite a dry spell, we've got some surf!  15 miles visibility and partly cloudy skies with a light south wind blowing about 3.2kts (before picking up early afternoon and blowing 15-20kts out of the west.)  The sea surface in the am was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 67.2 and the water is 69.1 at the buoy.  Low tide was at 7:50am +2.4' and high tide will be at 2:19pm +5.4'.  We have a building west swell out of 255º at 4.3' and it was 3' to 4' and planking on the inside.  But if you got an early start you could make it through the drop and on to the flats...   Whoopee! H appy hour Friday evening will be at Samba at 5:30pm on the patio. L ooking for an open spot at the counter?  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Last Day Of Summer Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S niff...  It's the last day of summer...  But it's 80 F'n DEGREES !!   Hahahaha... M eanwhile the surf sucks...  Even though it's warm and sunny and there's 20+ miles visibility the waves are flat... Just to be polite we'll tell you that it's low tide at 6:45am +1.9' and high tide will be at 1:10pm +5.7', but the surf is 1' and poor and straight out of the south.  Now all of that is supposed to change tomorrow.  That's okay because the water at the buoy is 69.3 and warmer in the surfline...  Y esterday's shirts were from 1984, so we thought, "What the hell, let's try it again in 1985."  Unfortunately, the results were almost exactly the same, including Nuuhiwa dancing with LoLa and him beating the Professor in their heat.  Except this time it was Nuuhiwa that won and John Joseph and Mike Purpus that knocked him out of the semis...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!

An Asymetrical Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he pectoral and dorsal view of a Weber contest t-shirt that is probably older than a good portion of our readers.  The Professor ended up with David Nuuhiwa and Dale Dobson in the third heat south of the Hermosa Pier.  Even though Nuuhiwa was the odds on favorite, Dobson won.  The Professor always said when asked how he did, "I got beat by Nuuhiwa and Dobson."  To add insult to injury, at the dance at the Manhattan Armory that night, David spent the night dancing with LoLa.  Handsome devil, him... A beautiful clear morning with 20+ miles visibility and some puffy Toy-Story clouds.  Winds were offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy while the water was 68.7 and the air was 74.5.  We're not through with summer YET!  Low tide was at 5:57am +1.3' and high tide was at 12:16pm +5.9'.  We have a building SW swell out of 236º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' with some hard pitching sand whackers...  Supposed to build thr

Pygmy Mammoth Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... L ast week we saw this dot coming over the water toward the pier in Hermosa.  As it got closer we could barely make out a dory and what appeared to be two pirates flying the skull and crossbones.  They were paddling at a great rate and in no time we could make out young Frankie Volk and Skipper Todd Sander as they jibbered across our bow.  They paddled through the pier and then back to land on the beach and show their colors...  They found this bark and got it ship-shape and rowed it to the beach to impress their friends and stun their enemies...  No kooks... F oggies this morning with 200 yards visibility.  Winds were out of the SW at 2.2 kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 63.9 and the water was 68.7, getting to 70 midday.  Low tide was at 5:16am +0.8' and high tide will be at 11:31am +6.0'.  We have a SW swell out of 230º at 2.3' and it was 2' to 3' and breaking hard on the shore...     I f you're looki

Another Full Moon Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o you get three guesses as to where photo #1 was taken:  #1  Kings Canyon ?   Good guess, but you're about three hundred miles off. 10 miles visibility this morning with a brilliant full moon diving into the ocean as the sun came up in a hazy sky.  No wind and a smooth sea surface.  The air temp was 60.0 and the water is 66.6.  High tide was at 9:41am +5.5' and low tide will follow at 3:36pm +0.6'.  We have a SW swell out of 219º at 2.3' and it was 2' to almost 3' pretty close to the sand... G uess #2 Santa's Village ?  Whoa, is there still a Santa's Village?  Anywhere? H appy hour tonight will be on the top deck of Hennessey's in Hermosa at the foot of the pier.  5:30pm and we'll watch the sun dissolve into the west...  Dangerously close to the end of summer we're looking at the last weekend for the summer of 2016.  Use it wisely... P hotos 2 & 3 are some more food pics from Sardinia or Sardegna as they spell

Lost Boys & Co... W e were so impressed with Gabri's stone work that we took a few shots of his outdoor kitchen.  Maybe more impressive than his masonry talents were his cooking abilities... T here were almost waves this morning!  Okay, so there were some small ones.  It was clear and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 2.7kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 63.2 and the water temp is holding around 67.6.  High tide was at 9:10am +5.2' and low tide will follow at 2:54pm +1.0'.  We have a 2.6' swell out of the SSW 203º and it was 2' to 3' north of Marine and south of 27th St. #2 is the Professor's "art shot" of the Sardinian littoral landscape.  He had LoLa walk as he panned the shot and just as in real life, she appeared and disappeared at will.  This is the first photographic evidence we have of the phenomena...  Thank you! H appy hour this week will be at Hennessey's in Hermosa, with any luck on the u

Try Not Thinking Of It As A Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he Professor and our friend Gabriel Carta at his home in Chia, Sardinia.  Gabri has three passions:  Surfing, Tango and stone masonry, he's also a pretty damned good cook.  We met him in El Salvador about a year ago and he invited us to visit him when he got home.  He's traveled all over the world, dancing and surfing.  When we met him in El Salvador, he was heading to Guatemala to work with a noted Tango instructor.  His home is a testament to his craft, using native stone that he collected from the local mountains and brought to his property.  He built the entire thing from the ground up... H azy sun this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 59.3 and the water was 68.5 and felt good in the cool air.  High tide was at 10:17am +5.0' and low tide will follow at 3:58pm +1.2'.  We have a west swell out of 256º at 3.6' and it was 3' to 4' with some ear-lobe high peaks and som
