Wooly Mold Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I t's like you're blasting down PCH and suddenly the bus starts smelling a little funky.  You notice the headlights are a bit dim and then things start turning a fungal shade of green/gray.  Yeah, dude!  You got mold!  This was a bad case, probably from leaving a pair of booties in the back... C lear and cold this morning.  Cloudless skies and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were offshore from the NE by 2.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 54.9˚ and the water was 62.8˚, but that offshore brought the wind chill to "freeze ass."  High tide was at 7:18am +5.1' and low tide will be at 1:35pm +1.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205˚ at 2.6' and it's 1' to 3' requiring a certain amount of patience to your attack...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

A Twinge Of A Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o, how do you get to the beach on Halloween?  The pumpkin bus is here to take you to your trick-or-treating destination!  Thanks to Danger Girl for sending us the idea!  The seats are a bit slimy, but the seeds are tasty... I t blows like hell yesterday and you think, "It's got to be great in the morning!  At least a short period wind swell...  Well, There's 20+ miles of visibility, with only a few rogue clouds bumping around (even though it rained with some authority this am.)  Winds were out of the north at checkout by 3.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 54.9˚ and the water was down a degree to 63.5˚.  High tide was at 6:55am +4.8' and low tide will be at 12:59pm +1.8'.  Unfortunately, it must've blown itself out and we're left with a west swell out of 261˚at 2.6'.  It's 1' to 2' and just a bit ragged... M eanwhile, the guys at Brother's were watching, possibly the largest wave ever

No Mosquitos Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e've been hearing that there's been this outbreak of West Nile virus spread by a toxic strain of pesky mosquitos.  Apparently spiders eat mosquitos.  There are no signs of mosquitos at this house in Hermosa, but they look like they've got bigger problems... S tormy Monday for your surfing pleasure.  15 miles visibility under cloudy and at times, weepy or rainy skies.  Winds were 19.1kts at checkout and the sea surface was white-capped.  The air wasn't too bad at 60.2° but the water's gone down a bit to 64.6°.  High tide at 6:32am +4.4' and low tide will be at 12:19pm +2.4'.  We have a west swell out of 267° at 5.9'.  We'll call it 4' to 5' and pretty mixed up.  Could be some weather for the next couple of days, but once the wind stops the surf could improve markedly... W e'd have you guess where photo #2 was taken, but it's so obvious that we won't bother.  Yes!  It's Iceland.  How do you explain to B

Lost Boys & Co... O ur editor wouldn't work yesterday, so we couldn't download the photos from our "Lost Brother's" tour of downtown.  Gathered at the 6th St. Tavern were Tio Ted, Lauri, Ronnie, Danger Girl, Marcy and LoLa working on the toasted cheese sandwich...  Thanks again to "Tarzan" Leko...( Photo:  Barry Santos for the LA Weakly ) C loudy skies with 9 miles visibility.  Maybe it'll break in the pm, but no promises.  Winds out of the NW 302° at 2.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 61.2° and the water is holding at 66.0°.  Low tide was at 7:31am +3.3' and high tide follows at 1:30pm +4.4'.  We have a SW swell out of 219° at 2.3' and it's not turning the corner.  1' to 2' and poor, but maybe mañana... #4... 1.    Visualization. These days we talk about our physical health ad nauseam, but sometimes our mental health gets overlooked. The morning is the perfect time to spend some qui

Thermocouple Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... L ast night the short bus left Ronnie's house and headed north to tour the big city.  No disappointments there!  We visited Mike Leko's place(s) and had some of the best grinds we've had in ages.  If you haven't had the Duck Confit Club sandwich, then you have something to look forward to.  That is if you can pass up the chicken and doughnuts or chicken lollipops or duck fries with cheese curds and roast ducky... C loudy this morning, looking like it might try and rain even.  About 7 miles visibility and lots of gray.  Winds were out of the NW at 3.3kts and the sea surface had a bit of ripple to it.  The air temp was 62.5˚ and the water was 66.2˚.  Low tide was at 6:11am +3.1' and high tide will follow at 12:29pm +4.8'. We have a SSW swell out of 202˚ at 2.3' and it's just about that and wally crashy and most inconsistent... 5 Things... 3. Eat a Healthy Breakfast. We all know that rush out the door with a cup of

Lost Boys & Co... A ll we can ever think of when we see this photo is:  "When are you gonna let Froggy Gremlin up for air?"  Boomfwappa rockin' the long hair on the occasion of his 1st birthday.  Pops took him to the barber immediately following this photo session, much to mom's dismay... O vercast skies and 7 miles visibility on a rather dampish October morning.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth with a bit of a bump/ripple.  The air temperature was 61.0˚ and the water was 66.4˚.  Just sayin' it would be a lot nicer if the sun was out.  Low tide early at 5:30am +2.7' and high tide will be at 11:46am +5.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 193˚ at 1.8' and a north swell out of 310˚ at 6.7', but both are at too severe an angle to help us out.  The Santa Monica buoy reports a 2.6' swell and that's about it for a 1' to 3' patience trying morning.  It's supposed to get better...  More patience... Tip #2

Lost Boys & Co... S o, here it is the 22nd of October and our almanac tells us that it's both Genevieve Carlisle's and Boomfwappa's birthdays!  Well, happy birthday to them!  We managed to get this beach themed photo of Genevieve, sporting what was then a rather risque suit.  Turns out, that this two piece is older than Boomfwappa... O vercast this morning breaking into hazy sun with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the SW(234˚) by 2kts and the sea surface was lightly ruffled.  The air temperature was 60.9˚ and the water was 65.8˚.  High tide was at 11:11am +5.6' and low tide will be at 6:28pm +0.4'.  We have a weak SW swell out of 243˚ at 2.0' and it's 1' and poor again .  It's supposed to get better tomorrow...  Jimmy Thomas said... F rom Capt. Donnie in Puerto Escondido (re: hurricane Raymond)... Frank:  Yes the storm is about 300 miles up the coast and we got rain and a great lightning show.  The surf has been big and somewhat mixed

Lost Boys & Co... U h, not quite sure what's going on here.  This was obviously not a candidate for "Instacanvas." Some interesting work was shown at the Hamilton Gallery for basically an "insta."  4 hours one night.  Showing Instagram photos that had been blown up and put on canvas.  If the surf was better we wouldn't have to resort to this kind of thing... S ure is dark later these days.  The sun rose at 7:01am this morning!  Overcast when you could finally see, with a hazy 10 miles visibility.  Wind was light, barely registering 2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 59.0˚ and the water was 64.9˚.  High tide was at 10:39am +5.9' and low tide will be at 5:43pm +0.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 209˚ at 1.6' and it doesn't look that big...  Now, we do have a 4' swell out of the northwest, but it's at 315˚ and we typically need something that's below 300˚.  On the flip-side we have Hurricane Raymond belo

Fatheaded Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S unny day with a bit of haze out there.  Since you can see Catalina, we'll call it 20+ miles visibility.  Where you could really see a long way, was in the water.  We paddled out past the end of the Hermosa Pier and in about 30 to 40 feet of water we could still see the bottom.  Winds were calm at checkout and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp was 64.2˚ and the water is 65.7˚.  High tide was at 9:08am +6.3' and low tide will follow at 3:45pm -0.2'.  We have a SW swell out of 223˚ at 2.0', hitting the beach way too close to shore at 1'.  There's a full moon this evening, which should be passingly spectacular.  But if you really want to see something special, get up tomorrow morning before sunrise and catch the full moon setting over the ocean.  Kinda like a Kodak moment...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!
