Day After Christmas (Friday) Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T ake a look out of our window this morning!  Kinda snowy out there.  But you can see that Anaconda Burke shovelled the driveway last night before we went out and it's looking pretty clean.  More snow expected for today, but right now it's looking pretty much Currier & Ives... L ooking at the bouy from almost a thousand miles away it looks like it's clear, but pretty windy this morning or is going to be pretty darned soon.  The buoy is reading 23.3kts and calling for white caps early.  The air temp is 52.0℉ and the water temp is 52.0℉.  The buoy is reading 8.2', which sounds pretty damned great, but we're guessing that the wind is going to raise hell with the swell and the shape.  But go check it out...  we're kinda out in the hustings here! I t's on to the mountains this morning and we're expecting more snow and snowy weather.  Hoping that the surf irons itself out and you get some good ones! "When the surf breaks, we'

Merry Christmas Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A Merry Christmas to you all on this rainy, very winter-like Southern California day.  Let's see what the surf looks like so you can try out all your new equipment... U nder rainy, cloudy skies we have one and a half miles visibility.  Winds are offshore by 9.7kts and the sea surface has a bit of reverse tack to it.  The air temp is 53.6℉ and the water is 57.7℉.  High tide is at 7:26am +5.7' and low tide will follow at 2:54pm -0.6'.  The buoy is reading 6.6' on an increasing swell and the waves even floated by the high tide are 5' to 6' where they're breaking (check out Burnout, the Cove and Avenue F at the drain.)  As the tide drops it's going to get better! S o a very Merry Holiday to you all and we'll be back on the 31st for the Kincaid's salute to '08.  Things start at 4pm and we'll be late, but start without us! "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... T he world is going crazy.  We stopped by Mrs Campbell's last night and all of her lights were out.  It couldn't have been a blown fuse, because half of Redondo would have gone down with her.  Instead we got this shot of a place behind Calle Mayor Middle School.  This photo doesn't do it justice.  Since it was blinking randomly in 14 different sections they aren't all lit at once.  The best part was that the owner of the house was ensconced in the middle of this display watching the cars go by and the general mayhem that was happening while folks tried to squeeze into that little street to get a look.  A right maniacal bastard he had a grin like the Grinch... C loudy the Christmas Eve morning with 20 miles visibility under heavy clouds which are supposed to give way to rain this afternoon.  The wind at 6am was off at 7.8kts and the sea surface was smooth, with a bit of a light roll.  The air temperature is 52.3℉ and the water is 58.1℉.  High tide

Lost Boys & Co... T ook a walk on the Hermosa Beach Pier last night and saw the above sign.  Apparently, the white croaker, known also as kingfish and tomcod is full of PCBs, DDT and other dangerous chemicals.  Now the last time we saw a white croaker flailing around on a line he was looking pretty damned energetic despite the hook in the lip situation.  We were thinking if they're doing so well with all of those chemicals floating around inside of them, maybe they've built up some immunities that we could use!  The good news is that (before they lapsed into Spanish) they assured us that no matter how much you eat, you won't go into a coma.  That's important if you want to stay conscious through the entire meal.  Of course we're still a bit sketchy about calling them "croaker."  That's kind of a red flag, yeah... F or a brief time this morning the wind was pretty much calm and then it decided it would cut loose.  So right now we have 25 miles visi

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how you get these great Christmas cards, with these perfect looking families on them and you wonder how long it took them to pose for the pic.  Well, we had some coffee with the Maggios as they stuffed their Christmas cards into envelopes and mailed them around the world.  We took this photo to prove that not all families look perfect all the time and dammit, they still look pretty damned perfect!  I t's raining this morning and we have about three-quarters of a mile visibility.  Winds are out of the southwest by 7.3kts and the sea surface is smooth and mottled from the light rain.  The air temperature is 57.2℉ and the water is 59.2℉.  High tide is at 5:43am +5.4' and low tide will be at 1:06pm +0.2', setting us up for afternoon minus tides for the rest of the week.  The buoy is reading a 3.0' swell coming out of 266 degrees.  The high tide is floating it to 2' and it's not looking like it's worth braving the persistent rain/

Lost Boys & Co... E njoying the beautiful weather between the storms!  We hit the waves in Hermosa this morning - but more in a minute... C lear and cold this morning with 25miles visibility and not a cloud in the sky.  Winds were offshore by 7.3kts and the sea surface had an offshore tack.  The air temp was 49.6℉ and the water was 59.0℉.  Low tide was at 9:52am +1.8' and high tide will follow at 3:13pm +3.5'.  The buoy is reading 2.0' and the waves actually took notice, because they held right to that 2' mark! W e decided we'd tune up for the Redondo Alumni Contest tomorrow (the first heat hits the water at 7:30am, sign ups at 7am) so even though the surf was a bit small, we decided to give the pier a try.  So we paddled out and who did we see but Bob Thomas and Bobby Warchola (both of them went to Redondo.)  So we said, "Hey, did you guys know there's a Redondo High Alumni contest tomorrow?"  They looked around and both said, "Aw shit!"
