Through and Through Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

So we started out the morning talking to Birdie and Leonard Treadwell and reminiscing about some of the old names and faces.  4 hours later we were getting out of the water at the Cove.  Let's check the surf and then talk about the Cove...

Pretty overcast this morning - bound to last all day.  3 miles visibility and a lot of haze on the deck.  Winds are offshore by 3.9kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temp is 59.4f and the water is 59.9f.  Low tide starts off the day at 7:27am +3.1', with high  tide at 12:43pm +4.0'.  While the buoy is reading 3.0' the swells seemed to be bigger than that and we caught the Cove at waist to shoulder high.  Speaking of the Cove...

We don't make any bones about it - the Cove is not one of our favorite places.  It's a commitment.  You have to drive up the hill.  You stand there and check it out.  You count how many surfers are out.  You try to decide if the surf is worth it.  Then you have to walk down the hill - that takes 15minutes.  Then you have to paddle out - who knows how long that takes?  If it has any size it takes as long as it takes.  Then you wait for your turn.  If there are a lot of folks out it takes a while.  You catch as many waves as you catch and then you have to paddle back in.  Then you have to go back up the hill.  That takes longer than the walk down because the escalator is broken.  You get the picture?  So when we decided to go out, it was with some little trepidation.  BUT, we figured we needed the exercise and the paddle would loosen up all those tight neck muscles.  You can imagine the surprise when we discovered that by the time we paddled out there only were six (6) surfers, counting us, and we knew 2 of them (Shelly Meistrel and Jenny Teer.)  The waves were chest high to right around shoulder height and pretty good shape.  We practiced our cutbacks and actually got a left that didn't section like they usually do.  We considered the whole ordeal a success and were glad we made the effort.

Tomorrow we'll be joining the BMHS surf team for a practice session at the Hermosa Pier.  The fun starts at 7:30am and probably last until 9 or 9:30.  Join the Professor and his apprentices for a good time.  Brett Balcer also has a water camera!

Also tomorrow evening we'll be congregating at El Torito to welcome Megan Chiaramonte in for the weekend.  We'll be there at 6:30 in the middle bar area (below the upper bar area and above the lower eating area.)  Don't worry you'll recognize us!

Finally, we heard this evening that Savannah Paine will be doing a gig at the Think Cafe in January.  We'll let you know the details as soon as they are available.  If you've ever heard her sing you know that it'll be a fun set.

"When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."
