Fly Away Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o, like always, everyone wants to know how the surf was...  Photo #1.  Gives some indication of the playing field.  A good wave (like the one Ché is on here) is about 200 yards.  A really good one is 300 yards, but then you have to paddle your ass all the way back.  Or you can do like Wheatley in photo #2 and go a hundred yards, but travel 200 and save the paddle out... H ere this morning we have clear skies and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were on from the start at 4.7kts and the sea surface had a slight bump.  The air temp was 72.6˚ and the water is 67.8˚, but felt a bit warmer in the surf line.  Low tide was early at 5:35am +1.2' and high tide will follow at 11:57am +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 195˚ at 5.9' and it's enough to create some 3' to 4' waves at our beaches...  Looks like a great beach day! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Mud People Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O kay, we've been on surfari, for the last couple of weeks and been hangin' with the Portagee kids since our return.  But you'll be happy to know that we were busy doing important anthropological research while on our travels.  Yes!  Turns out we were the first to make direct contact with the "Mud People" of northwestern Mexico.  A primitive race of red/pink-skinned hominids, at one point they had a thriving culture in this part of Mexico.  Evidence of their existence has circulated for years, but these are the first documented photos!  #1.  Their chief, Wheat-Wheat, wearing the "mud-crest" that signals his rank.  Note how pink the skin is in the patches you can see around his eyes and lips. A gorgeous summer day in the southland, with students being reeled back into the classroom, while Labor Day looms.  20+ miles visibility.  Winds were light out of the NW 315˚ at 1.2kts and the sea surface was mostly smooth.  The air temp was

M egalodon.  Supposedly based on a shark that lived a gazillion years ago.  It's actually a trash compactor made to look like a movie shark.  They fed it a jet ski.  Mind you, there was an entire ocean 200 yards to the west that includes an armada of smaller (and some not much smaller) but potentially more voracious animals.  This is why Disneyland, Las Vegas and Universal Studios exist... W e'll be out for the next week, down in Cardon, dodging hurricanes, sampling agaves and looking for those magic lefts...  See you when we get back!     ✠  "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Marco & Co. Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... D on't miss a chance to ride in the "Wiggly Bus" when you're in America.  Marco's back in town and he brought his crew to share the fun.  So Raquel, Sara, Marco and Pedro (he's in the back) piled into the bus and went to (where else?) Brother's for brekky.  Captain Don took them for a sail mid-day and they all got to steer "No Way" around the bay.  Dinner was a fabulous affair at Zoë's and by the end of the evening Sara was wondering if she was in a movie...  Well, yes, but Chuck owns the rights and Clark is producing it.  Everyone has a part... O vercast, breaking blue as the sun struggles through the clouds and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were almost offshore as they blew from the SE at 2.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 64.6˚ and the water was 71.2˚ at the buoy and 74˚ at the Hermosa Pier.  You gotta jump in despite the fact that the waves are teeny.  Low tide was at 6:23am +0.3' and high tid

O n the beach in Hermosa Beach waiting for the show to start.  Nothing like hanging with the eager and curious...   P artly cloudy this morning with 10+ miles visibility.  Winds were on shore at 3.3kts and the sea surface was a bit riled.  The air temperature was 66.5˚ and the water was 69.6˚ at the buoy.  Low tide at 5:03am -0.8' and high tide is at 11:20am +5.5'.  We have that persistent SSW swell out of 193˚ at 2.3' pushing some 1' to 2' shore smackers our way.  Like always it's supposed to get better tomorrow... O n his way up the coast by rail Danger Boy reports "No waves in Ventura or Santa Barbara counties." and "Didn't even see any at Hollister Ranch." M eanwhile in the Outer Banks, Boomfwappa says the wind has been blowing constantly since he got there.  "On the good side, warm water and good body surfing..." Remember Mork Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A bout four years ago we got invited to a roast for Matt Damon.  There were a bunch of "A-listers", but at the next table was Robin Williams and his wife Susan.  LoLa struck up a conversation and told him we'd been fans since the Mork days.  He was stoked we knew his work at the Comedy and Magic Club!  So LoLa had the Professor take a pic.  Meanwhile Robin's wife Susan Schneider and the Professor decided they never get their photos taken, so they had LoLa return the favor.  What marvelously genuine human beings.  They spent 20 minutes chatting with us and made our evening.  Words cannot express...  but maybe, "Nanoo, nanoo..." C lear skies and 20+ miles visibility.  Winds were on from the start of the day at 2.5kts and the sea surface was a tad bumped.  The air temperature was 68.3˚ and the water was 68.5˚.  High tide was at 10:40am +5.3' and low tide will be at 4:16pm +0.9'.  There's a SSW swell out of 198˚ at 2.6' a

Lost Boys & Co... T here will be NO fishing from this pier until September 7th.  Because?  Because they said so...   O vercast this morning as we took Boomfwappa and fam to the aerodrome.  They're heading for the outer banks.  Maybe that's where they keep their money?  We expect pics and reports.  9 miles visibility and it's starting to break up.  Winds were out of the SW at 1.1kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 65.4˚ and the water is 68.9˚ at the buoy and 72+ at the HB Pier.  High tide is at 8:46am +4.2' and low tide will follow at 1:45pm +1.8'.  We have a SSW swell out of 196˚ at 3.3', but it's too south, the tide's too high and it's 2'.  Ché made it look fun, but Donnie and the Professor couldn't muster the stoke... P ic #2, say this fast three times.  It's a Mexican word that means pendulous breasts (and if it doesn't maybe it should.) B arney's Beanery on the RB Pier tonight at 5:30pm.  Show up and do

Got Nothin' To Say Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Y ears ago when we first went down to Zihaut, they didn't warn us about the sharks, or huge mantas, or Portuguese Man o' Wars.  Nope, they warned us about the river going crocodiles.  These babies get up to 30 feet and they eat PMo'W's, mantas and sharks, which is why you don't have to worry about those things...  Our pic is from Australia where this twenty-footer nabbed a Bull Shark and brought him back to the beach for a leisurely snack... A bit overcast this morning, breaking up to partly cloudy and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface had a bit of left over bump from last night's persistent breeze.  The air temp was 64.3˚ and the water was 66.0˚.  High tide was at 8:07am +3.8' and low tide will follow at 12:51 +2.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 192˚ at 3.0' and it's 1' to 2' and poor at most spots...  There's a bit of a south swell about, so if you can make it to a south facing beach,

O vercast this morning, turning into partly cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were on 3kts and the sea surface had a bit of light chop.  The air temperature was 64.0˚ and the water was 66.6˚ at the buoy.  High tide was at 7:23am +3.4' and low tide will be at 11:47am +2.4'.  Next week the tidal swings become more pronounced and we get set up for the autumnal fluctuations in September.  We have a SSW swell out of 190˚ at 3.0'.  It's 1' to 2' and poor to fair.  Lately, the wind has been blowing early and then dying around 8 to 9am.  Maybe mañana with a more cooperative tide... B et:  Mike and Clark invited HRH Rebecca to go fishing this morning.  We bet she catches the most fish...  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Tuna & Tenderloin Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... P ut that tuna in your pipe and smoke it!  Naw, just tear off a chunk and eat it with a cold brew and some pan français.  It's already smoked! D amn wind keeps kicking up in the am, but it seems to slack off a bit as things warm up, at one point calming down to zero even.  Sea surface had a bit of residual bump though and the sea temperature was 67.6˚ (72˚ at the Hermosa Pier) and the air was 65.3˚ at checkout.  AM tides, high at 6:19am +3.1' and low at 10:29am +2.5', with not much difference.  We have a SSW swell out of 196˚ at 3.3' and it's running just about that at most spots... A trip to the mercado would be incomplete without a visit to Lupita's to see what the knacker brought in last night.  Turns out that we were there just before Lady Gaga came in for a skirt steak wardrobe update.  Can you imagine how greasy she must get?  ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... N o we can't believe it either, but Warren Paine turned 40 this weekend.  Our first photo shows Warren kicking things off, figuratively as well as literally.  In our second pic, we have Little Richie Paine howling a bluesy number to the delight of the assembled family and friends...  As per usual a great time was had by all... A sunny Monday morning with 20+ miles visibility and winds out of the SW (225˚) at 3.3kts.  A slight ripple on the water at most spots.  The air temperature was 69.5˚ and the water at the  buoy is 69.1˚.  Low tide is at 9:05am +2.3' and high tide will be at 4:22pm +5.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202˚ at 3.6', but it's a bit cramped and the waves are in the 1' to 2' range.  Like always it's supposed to be  better mañana... W e should also mention the tall, rather imposing individual on the right playing bass is Dave Hallgrimsson.  He and Richard have been making music together for getting close to 50 y

Lost Boys & Co... S ome samplings of "tuna" this morning, from Rogelio, reminded us of this pic.  The buds of the nopalé cactus are called "tuna" in Spanish.  The blades of the cacti are great in omelets and are a legendary cholesterol lowering food.  In an effort to kill several birds with one stone, Barry Santos told us that he mixed a nopalé (to lower cholesterol), a carrot (to improve his vision), an oyster (for virility) and a half a cup+ of rum (to lower his blood pressure) and put them in the blender on "perfect storm."  The results were impressive to say the least.  His cholesterol went down, his blood pressure went down, his virility went up and he could now see TWO of everything!  Amazing...  O vercast this morning, waiting for the sun and 12 miles visibility.  Winds were calm at checkout and the sea surface was smooth with just a touch of oiliness.  The air temp was 69.3˚ and the water is 67.5˚ at the buoy and near 70˚ in the surfline.  Lo
