Lost Boys & Co... O kay, this looks like an intro to a Jet Li film, with a close-up of his prison deep within the bamboo forest.  Bamboo so thick the birds couldn't hop around through it.  Actually, this is another shot of the sculpture on top of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It's going to be there awhile, so if you're in the neighborhood... S un's trying to break through the haze this morning and we have 10 miles visibility.  The winds onshore from the get-go by 5.2kts and the sea surface is sporting a medium tack.  The air temp is 61.2° and the water hits an all-time new low of 58.8° for this date.  In all fairness it's about 63 to 64 in the surfline, but it's still way below normal, even for you and me.  Low tide is at 6:13am +0.7' and high tide follows at 12:44pm +4.5'. The buoy is reading a 2.6' swell out of the SSW at 194°.  We're calling it 2' with some rideable peelers at select breaks that shall remain nameless, unless you

Lost Boys & Co... N o, this isn't how everyone dresses on the Jersey Shore.  These two guys in the traditional East Indian garb had just walked up to a couple of young women sunbathing and asked to have their pictures taken with them.  The bikini clad girls obliged and the guys happily trotted away giggling and elbowing each other.  The wedding turned out to be a full on Bolly-wood production, with the groom riding in on a white horse surrounded by a couple of dozen dancing girls.  At the reception they had aerial fireworks indoors!  They just torched them off and hid behind the tables!  The whole place smelled like curry and gun powder!  By contrast, the nice little Jewish wedding we attended was on the beach.  The second photo shows the Chuppah, which is the little structure under which they say their vows.  It represents their new home and life they will build together.  It's supposed to be open on all sides symbolizing their commitment to creating a home that is always

Lost Boys & Co... L ook!  There's our room!   It's the third from the left on the second row from the top...  Well, it was actually pretty nice...  You know it had that veranda and all.  We actually felt better when we saw how the locals live.  This is a shot of the condo multiplex next door to the hotel.  Can you imagine trying to find someone in the riot of similitude?  "Yeah, it's yellow with white trim and a gray roof.  You can't miss it.  It's either 507 or 705, I can't remember..." W hat the...!  Is that the sun?  Yeah it is!  It's clear this morning with 20 miles visibility.  Winds are already onshore by 5.1kts and the sea surface is tacked up.  The air temperature is 61.2° and the water is also 61.2°.  We're pretty sure you've been getting tired with our harping about the cool water temps, so we looked up this date last year for a little comparison.  Last year on this date the water was 69.1°!  That's 7.9 degrees, which in

Lost Boys & Co... W e have to admit that on the right coast they really encourage the arts.  Here is an example.  We have no idea what the hell it is, but there it was, on a little triangle of grass, just off the traffic circle, near the beach in Long Branch.  It stood about 8' high, covered with shells and looked like a buried elephant checking things out with it's trunk before surfacing.  LoLa thought it looked like a periscope and Keeks thought it had more of a tentacle tendency.  Our friend Sigmund thought it looked like a bent dick.  Ouch!  Dude... T o no one surprise, it's overcast again this morning and it's not appearing to make any attempt to clear up soon.  Visibility is 7 miles and the haze is gray and persistent.  Winds have been inclined to be onshore since daybreak and are currently 2.5kts, with a smooth sea surface.  The air temperature is 60.3° and the water is 63.0°, suggesting that even if you are dyslexic, it might not make too much difference.

Monmouth Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W ell, even though it's a Monmouth Monday, we're back in good ole southern Califrisco.  But here's a couple of shots from just south of Monmouth at Long Branch.  You can see that it was bigger there than it was here when we left.  We kept waiting for the Coach to say, "Hey, Professor!  We're in New Jersey!"  They actually have some pretty good waves here during the summer at the right tides and when the hurricanes are spinning far below in the Atlantic.  You might also notice that the set-up is rather Topaz-like in quality and rockiness.  In fact it goes Topaz-like all the way down the beach.  Here we demonstrate four Topazes in a row, all happening with predictable precision.  We've always wondered why the Army Corps of Engineers stopped with Topaz St. and one jetty.  We could've saved a lot of sand, created some good waves and spread the crowd out a bit if there were four or five jetties!  Damn good idea... D oing a little vacation in Ephram, WI.  Note the dual purpose table top and wind surf board.  There is NO surf today in Ephram, a small bay on the larger Green Bay .  Weather is 77 and a little muggy.  Beer is cold and deep fried cheese curds are hot, what more could one want? DirectBG (You had us at beer...  then lost us at cheese curds...  Ed.) A nother overcast start in the South Bay.  Visibility 8 miles and winds are offshore by 1.2kts.  The sea surface is smooth.  The air temp is 62.6° and the water is 62.8°.  We have a SSW swell out of 208° at 3.0', but once again it's got too much south to help us out much...  Maybe a little better tomorrow... T hanx, Prof, no mention of the sweaty confinement onboard.  How  about the temp & humidity where you are? Paver (The temps in the city were in the low 90's and the humidity was supposed to be 85%.  We thought it was more like the mid 80's and 50% humidity.  Remember, we're goofing around an

C oming to you this morning from deep in the Bambu forest of Manhattan above the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  These two guys (along with a bunch of friends) are constructing this huge bamboo sculpture that upon completion is supposed to represent a cresting wave!  Giddeeyup!  Yeah, it's pretty cool.  We didn't pay the extra tariff to climb around, but we might!  It reaches about 50' above the roof of the Met so it's pretty dramatic.  So, now we're thinking - can you imagine the view we'd have if we built one of these things on the roof of the Topaz International Trump Tower?!  You'd be able to see Malibu breaking!  T his morning in the Sout h Bay it's dawning gray and cool.  Visibility is about 4 miles.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is smooth to glassy.  The air temperature is 62.3° and the water is 61.9°.  We have a SSW swell out of 197° at 3.9'.  The swell is so south that it's missing most of the local beaches, so

Lost Boys &Co... S o we're getting ready to take the train into the Big Apple this morning.  Taking the train is fun because you can just sit there and not worry about driving and the traffic and the Holland Tunnel being way under all of that water, with jets landing on it and all that stuff... T his morning under overcast skies we have 7 miles visibility and calm winds.  They'll be coming up soon out of the SSW and probably be pretty light until about 10:30am.  The sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 66.3° and the water is 63.0° at the 46221 buoy.  We have a SSW swell out of 204° true at 3.0'.  Since we're so far away, it's hard to see the waves, but we're guessing if you run down and take a look, there'll be something to see... W hen you're on the road it's kinda fun to draw the folks that inhabit the spaces around you.  They can't catch you though - some folks get a bit of the fantods if they find out you're capturing their

Lost Boys & Co... H ere is the basic shot of the beach from the high tide line.  You can see that it's pretty damned crowded - okay - well it was Saturday...  Everybody was there...  Everybody...  and three acrobats.  They are shown in photo the second.  They look a bit zaftig from this extreme angle, but remember they are in the second row of the 5 story human pyramid, so they are not the light-weights.  The place:  Long Branch, New Jersey.  And YES!  There were waves and a couple of guys on SUP's were catching some of the squidlers and mocking the short boarders.  You should hear the folks on the beach.  They were all extras on the Sopranos... all except for the acrobats... A Montclair Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W ell, here we are on the right coast in Montclair, NJ after 3 days of eating, sunbathing, getting people married-off and swimming in 68℉ water about 15' from the shore.  Don't laugh!  There were some waves...  We've got pictures and we'll share'm as soon as we figure out how to download them on to Keeks computer... S o, as near as we can tell from 2000 miles away, we have cloudy skies with 7 miles visibility.  Winds are out of the SW by 2.7kts and there's a light tack on the water.  The air temp is 62.2° and the water is 60.8°.  So, we're calling it small and peckish and we're hoping that the overcast breaks and we get a bit of sun today. O kay, pics later... "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

A nother fabulous day in Paradise!  Here we are at Topaz Bay between sets - no... wait... oh yeah, that's Aruba!  Well, Topaz looks a lot like Aruba today.  If you don't believe us go down and take a look... There's just no Santa Monica in the distance... O n the beach we have 15 miles visibility under those Arubian blue skies, with just a bit of marine haze.  Winds out of the SW by 3.7kts, leaving a light tack on the sea surface.  Air temperature is 62.3° and the water is 58.1° at the buoy and probably closer to 63° in the surfline.  Low low tide at 5:59am -1.0' and high tide will be at 12:30pm +4.8'.  The ever popular 46221 buoy is reading a W swell out of 250°, blending into a bit of south off the jetty at 3.6'.  All of this is conspiring to create some nice waves in the 3' to 4' range, with good shape and consistency.  W e surfed Sappharua this morning and had a 2+ hour session that included 250 Junior Guards.  The Professor th

Lost Boys & Co... YES!  After weeks of overcast skies the dawn broke sunny and bright!  Nothing like a little blue sky to cheer things up... S o under those aquamarine skies we have 20 miles visibility and little or no marine layer.  Winds will kick up early, but at checkout it was 1.2kts out of the west and smooth seas.  The air temperature is 59.2° and the water is almost the same at 60.6°.  Apparently the winds over the ocean have drug up some deeper, cooler water and it's a bit chilly out there.  Low tide dredges things out at 5:19am -1.3' and high tide is at 11:49am +4.5'.  A 7.8' tidal variation between the big swings in the evening and early morning.  The 46221 buoy is reading a W swell out of 280° true at 2.6'.  We're calling it 1' to almost 3' and fair to poor shape.  We went out at Torrance after checking Topaz and Hermosa and caught some fun little crashers.  The rising tide kinda softened things out, but the wind is early today... Y et another gray morning, with 10 miles visibility under substantial overcast.  Winds are calm at checkout and the sea surface is almost glassy.  The air temp was 60.3° and the water is a ridiculously chilly 62.4°.  The good news about such cool water temperatures is that hurricanes only happen in waters that are typically 15° to 20° warmer.  So feel free to take down the storm windows and unbatten the hatches.  High tide is at 9:22am +3.6' and low tide will follow at 1:32pm +2.4'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 191° at 2.3'.  We'll call the resulting waves about half of that at 1'.  A good morning to go paddling though.  Head straight out and when you decide to turn around the onshore wind will give

This is SUPPOSED to be SUMMER for cry'n out loud!  Cloudy skies drizzling through the overcast.  Wipers a must and turn on the headlights too.  The air temperature at checkout was a balmy 58.6° and the water wasn't warm at 63.7°, even though the Hermosa Pier Patrol has the posted temp at 65° - a myth we say!  High tide at 6:48am +2.8' and low tide will be at 10:34am +2.4' with a whopping .4' tidal differential.  The 46221 buoy is reading a SSW out of 199° true at 3.6', but none of that is hitting the south South Bay, so we're calling it 1' to 2' and poor to dismal...  Tomorrow?  Maybe hail and sleet...
