Lost Boys & Co... W ho dat looking at us?  We know.  Wait 'til we get him in the water - then you'll see some stylin'.  Bet us... A gorgeous day once the fog lifted and scooted out of the way.  We started out between 1/4 and 5 miles visibility this morning and then it blew off.  Winds are offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temp at 7am was 51.4° and the water is 55.9°.  Low tide was scheduled for 7:59am -0.1' and there it was, while high tide is due at 2:57pm +2.8'.  Down from 305° we have a north swell that's just peeking around the corner coming in at 5.8'.  By the time it gets to the Santa Monica bay buoy it's 2.6' and we're calling the waves 2' to 3'.  Small but nicely shaped affairs..  You will like them.  We're hoping things hold for tomorrow morning.  F rom the Readers: Electronic Tiki torch at Franks house what happened to the purist I once knew ? Lost Boys & Co... W hat we have here is an electronic Tiki torch. It has solar cells on the top, charges the battery during the day and then when the sun goes down, or there's an eclipse or the sun goes out completely, the Tiki torch comes on with a flickering candle-like electronic light. We have no idea why, but they make us laugh. Couldn't wait for the sun to go down last night. We bought three... T en miles visibility this morning with a bit of haze and partly cloudy skies. Winds were offshore by 5.8kts and the sea surface was smooth, almost glassy. The air temperature was 54.2° and the water is 56.1°. Low tide starts the morning at 6:48am -0.3' and high tide is at 1:13pm +3.1'. The swell is coming out of 315° and the local Santa Monica buoy is calling it 3.6'. The waves were fun and about chest to head high if you kinda crouched a bit. T he Professor went out at Knob Hill and got a couple of nice rights and then a couple of lefts. Then he said, &

Lost Boys & Co... A s it happened, this morning we decided to include a couple of photos of annoying holes.  Hole #1 is a mousie hole we recently discovered behind the washing machine.  We were absolutely amazed by how perfect a mousie hole it was.  It looked just like the real mousie holes you see in the cartoons.  We took a photo of thresholdis rodentius and then immediately stuffed it with poisoned mousie bait.  Sorry, this doesn't have a happy ending... W ell the surf was good this morning!  Yep, it was partly cloudy, with more sunny than cloudy and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.9kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 54.3°and the water was 55.6° and would be a hell of a lot nicer if it would warm up.  High tide was at 9:50am +4.8' and low tide follows at 3:46pm +0.4'.  Out of 261° the buoy is reading a 3.6' swell.  But that swell mixed with a bit of the south swell is causing 4' to 5' waves and it broke right t

A beautiful morning on the bay today..  Clear skies and 22 miles visibility.  Winds are soft from the ENE at 3.9kts.  The sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 50.4°and the water is 56.3°.  High tide was at 9:12am +5.0' and low tide will be at 3:22pm +0.1'.  Out of 277° the buoy is reading a 3.9' swell.  We're calling the waves 3' to 4'.  We were out in the water when Mike Purpus showed up on a Kingfish.  He said it was the first one Gumby ever shaped.  It didn't look like he had it wired yet, but he' s hell bent to show Sciordia and the Mira Costa crew that he can still ride short boards.  The Professor wished him luck. Lost Boys & Co... L adies and gentlemen!  A good day to you.  Pictured we have Bob and Maureen Oliphant (Bob the Builder and Mo.)  Bob is just getting ready to fire up his new 7000 rpm industrial speed blender that he got for his birthday.  Mo is holding a sponge because he doesn't always think he needs the lid.  Result:  Best pina colada we've ever had wrung out of a sponge or not! S o we have 25 miles visibility this morning on a beautiful spring Tuesday.  Nary a cloud in the sky and looking blue just like it's supposed to.  Winds are offshore by 2.1kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 54.2°and the water is down around 55.4°.  High tide is at 8:36am +5.0' and low tide at 2:59pm is a +0.0'.  The swell is coming out of 280° at 3.9' and we're calling it shoulder to head high.  Topaz was rolling some nice ones and Sapphire had some outsides as well.  Looking to get smaller tomorrow, but there are still some nice ones out there.  Chec

Lost Boys & Co... O ur first photo this morning is simply titled "Recipe for Disaster."  Our second is an absolutely frightening display of nostalgia.  The funny thing about this pic is that it was probably taken during the 80's, which in the grand scheme of things was closer to the 60's than not.  Of course you now get to guess who is who.  Good luck.... A fine March day dawned this morning with 25 miles visibility and brilliant clear skies.  Winds are out of the north at 10.5kts, gusting to 15.  The sea surface is white caps and pretty bumpy.  The air temperature is 52.9° and the water has dropped a few to 55.4°.  Brrr...  High tide is at 8:01am +4.9' and low tide will be at 2:36pm -0.1'.  The buoy is reading a straight west swell out of 277° at 6.6'.  Since it's so chopped, we'll call it 6' but there appear to be some bigger sets and things are pretty blown around.  Let's hope things straighten out a bit for tomorrow.  Could be som

Stormy Sunday Special Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have three shots of the storm hitting the beaches this morning. #1 is a shot of the clouds scudding low over Palos Verdes.  So we're imagining that's about a 2,000' ceiling.  Easky, are we close? #2 is looking across the bay.  You can see Santa Monica, but the clouds are pretty low all the way across.  It was starting to rain when we snapped this one. #3 shows our own brand of hurricane palm frondage.  Okay, so they're not quite as bent as the Florida variety, but they're doing their best and making quite a show of it.  In case you're trying to re-do your palapa, you can head down Catalina street and pick up some raw materials! Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know you're going to do a thorough check of the surf when you're following the Danger Van.  Let's check the stats and see if Danger Boy and the Professor found anything... P retty gray and hazy with about a mile visibility.  Low overcast as far as we can see.  The winds are already onshore from the SW by 3.9kts and there's a considerable tack working up on the surface.  The air temp is 54.7°and the water is holding at 58.1°.  High tide was at 5:46am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 1:14pm +0.2'.  At the moment we have a swell coming out of 224° at 2.0'.  Not so deluxe, BUT we checked the Platform Harvest and they are showing a 5.5' swell coming down from 310°.  This could mean that we have a chance of having waves tomorrow or Sunday.  We LIKE that!  We'd also like to thank Danger Boy for reminding us about the Platform Harvest site..  We've attached the Platform site if you're curious about what we're looking

Lost Boys & Co... T oday is St. Joseph's Day and the traditional day on which the swallows return to Capistrano.  We have no idea if they showed up or not.  We don't even know what time they're supposed to get there.  It's also the last full day of Winter and we're happy enough about that.  The whole Spring-Summer thing is always welcome in these parts even though everyone claims we don't have seasons. A bit overcast this morning with some fog in the lowlands.  3 miles visibility and it looks like it might clear later in the morning.  Winds are offshore by 7.8kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temp is 54.2° and the water is up a couple of notches to 58.3°.  High tide is early at 4:23am +4.1' and low tide follows at 12:33pm +0.5'.  We have a swell spinning out of 239° at 2.6'.  The waves are right about waist high and looking a bit wally crashy even early on the higher tide.   O ur photo this morning is our attempt at an Anne Geddes pas

Lost Boys & Co... L ate report today!  A lot of stuff going on out there.  Let's take a look at the numbers... T his morning we were greeted with clear but hazy skies and later in the morning the fog came oozing through.  At the checkout we had 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5.7kts and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 52.9°and the water has warmed up to a much nicer 58.1°.  During the day it actually got up to 60°!  So you know that sooner or later we'll have the foggies... yuk!  High tide was an early 2:30am +4.2' and low tide was at 11:29am +0.7'.  The buoy was reading a 3.0' swell out of 232° and we're calling the waves 2' to 3'.  We surfed Tres Palmas again this morning and there are definitely some possibilities.  Check it in the morning! O ur photo today is a closeup of the famous Idaho "Dammit" sushi.  The salmon eggs are marinated in Tabasco sauce and there is a warm reminder after every bite.  Mix

I t's a beautiful almost Spring morning and we have 7 miles visibility under clear but hazy skies.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is glassy as yer mither's eye.  The air temperature is 54.1°and the water is up a couple to 57.7°  High tide is way early at 1:18am +4.5' and low tide is at 9:50am +0.8', so there's really only one tide today.  We have a swell coming out of the WSW at 200° and it's registering a 3.6'.  We lose a little as it turns the corner, but we surfed Tres Palmas and there were a few nice ones coming through.  Early is better with a bit more water! Idaho Morning Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... G etting ready to leave the Potato State this morning after a fine weekend with the Burke Family Performing Athletes.  Miles from the Pacific Ocean, we were treated to some excellent sushi a couple of night's ago.  Boise has definitely run headlong into the 21st century! T his morning there's a bit of haze (if the beach cams are any indication) and winds are calm.  The swell is out of the SSW and is just missing making the turn at the R-10 Buoy.  The water temperature is 57.4℉ and the air is slated to get in the mid to high 60's.  The swell is out of 256° and it's registering a 3.6'.  On the beach it' about 2' and we're hoping that the tide will help a bit.  Stay tuned for a full report tomorrow! W e watched a couple of performances of Eagle High's version of "You Can't Take It With You."  Rebecca Burke was sensational as Essie and the entire cast verged on stellar.  Great fun here in the hustings and we even got

Lost Boys & Co... G ood morning!  One of those beautiful Southern California March days.  It could almost pass for a Spring day - but it's not - it's still Winter.  We know it's winter because we've still got moss on the bricks in the back yard.  If you look at the photo long enough, it's hard to tell whether it's bricks or a an aerial photo of Irish farmland.  In fact we got stuck standing there for about a half an hour looking for leprechauns... P artly cloudy this morning and as the wind kicks up it's starting to blow some of the clouds out to Riverside.  Visibility is 25 miles and Santa Monica looks close enough to paddle to.  Winds are offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface is smooth.  You can expect that to change fairly early in the morning.  The air temperature is 50.6°and the water is 56.7°  High tide is at 10:48am +4.9' and low tide will follow at 4:45pm +0.3'.  We have a west swell coming out of 243° at 2.3'.  The only problem is

C loudy this morning with 15 miles visibility and the winds out of the SSE by 1.9kts.  The sea surface has a distinct tack to it.  The air temperature is 51.4° and the water is 56.3°.  High tide is at 10:05am +5.5' and low tide will be at 4:17pm -0.3'.  The buoy is reading a swell out of 273° at 2.3'.  The high tide is preventing everything from breaking, so we'll call it 1', but it doesn't look that good. Lost Boys & Co... W e have a shot this morning of the Professor up above the Cove checking out where not only the sidewalk ends, but where the entire road falls off the face of the earth.  Kinda neat to poke around and look at the geography.  You just hope that it's not going to move when you're out there! P artly cloudy this morning with some haze in the low places.  20 miles visibility, with the buildings across the bay just barely poking their pointy heads out of the smoggies.  Winds are offshore by 7.8kts and the sea surface is most glassy.  The air temperature this morning was a chilly 45.7 and the water is holding at 56.3.  High tide is at 9:22am +5.8' and low tide will be at 3:47pm -1.7'.  The buoy is reading a 2.3' swell out of  263.  The waves are barely breaking due to the high tide but we might start to see some little ones in the late morning, early afternoon.  If the wind stays off it could be okay. Future Shock Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I f you're interested in what the future holds for us, take a look at this shot taken by Big Wave Dave.  Apparently, the Biohazard Crew is going for the flat black look on some Detroit Iron.  Maybe the whole spoiler thing is being negated by those truck mirrors?  We're just standing back waiting for the anthrax to settle out....   C lear skies today and a beautiful Friday.  Visibility 20 miles.  Winds were offshore early at 3.9kts and the ocean surface was glassy.  The air temp was a cool 46.9° and the water was not warm at 56.1°. High tide was early at 4:53am +5.4' and low tide followed at 12:24pm -0.8'.  Predominantly out of the west at 260° the buoy is reading a 3' swell and that about sums up the wave height as well at most of the beaches. T he other evening we were walking along the Esplanade and noted how loud the waves were.  We started thinking about all of the conditions that cause loud waves.  Like big waves are loud - booming in fac

Lost Boys & Co... W e're checking out the surf this afternoon and right between Avenue B and Avenue C is parked the county jail bus.  We don't know if the driver was just checking the surf, or eating his lunch or someone had left and was wandering around on the beach without his bus pass.  Kind of an arresting sight just the same...  *smirk* C lear skies this morning and 20 miles visibility.  Winds started out the morning onshore by 7.8kts and the sea surface was tacked up.  The air was a bracing 47.9° and the water seemed a lot warmer even though it was 56.5°. High tide was way early at 3:31am +5.1' and low tide followed at 11:34am -0.4'.  Our new buoy (#46221) was reading a swell out of 259° W at 3.6'.  It was 4' at Topaz and the Avenues and we got some chest to shoulder high rollers at the Cove.  Possibility of rain tomorrow, but the swell is supposed to remain between 2' and 4'. -Ignore these four words- "When the surf breaks, we'll fix

Weltanschauung Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e included the photo of this tree up in the Cloisters to remind you that it's still winter in most of the Northern Hemisphere.  We still have a couple of weeks until the Vernal Equinox and of course Punxitawny Phil told us we have six more weeks of winter.  The Cloisters are up on northern Manhattan Island and face the Hudson River.  A rather idyllic setting, amplified by the fact that the Cloisters look like a Medieval Cathedral. T wenty miles visibility this morning with rain, sun, clouds and various atmospheric phenomena happening overhead.  Winds wee out of the SSW by 9.7kts and the sea surface had a heavy tack (almost chop.)  The air temperature was 54.2 and the water was a coldish 56.8.  Low tide was at 10:25am +0.1' and high tide is at 1:56pm +5.0'.  The buoy is reading a 4.9' swell out of 256 and we're calling it shoulder to head high if you're Poseur or Easky. W e hit Sapphire this morning and it was working nicely considering t

Lost Boys & Co... T he first thing we want to do today is apologize to Sting Ginther.  We were up at the top of Avenue A yakking with Sully and we decided the surf wasn't really very good.  Well, it wasn't - THERE..  We headed up to the Cove and sure enough it was going off.  Not big time, but there were only five other people in the water and it was waist to chest high.  We surfed Boneyards while everyone else was in the middle.  The kelp kept everything smooth and the tide was in a good mood as well.  The wind was on, but it barely blew the whole time.  We should'a suggested to Sting that we'd go up the hill, but we really didn't think it would be that good - honest!  We included a photo... T his morning we were greeted to partly cloudy skies and an onshore wind out of the WSW at 3.9kts.  The sea surface had a bit of a tack to it.  The air temperature was 53.2° and the water was 56.5°, although we'd swear there were some warmer spots.  High tide was at 12

Octo-Mom Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... D amn, we love the Octo-Mom!  Every day there's something new.  Her boyfriend wants a paternity test, she's channeling Angelina Jolie, Her mother thinks she's irresponsible and her father gets choked up talking about the entire thing.  What drama, pathos, sensation!  Of course the kids in the photos don't ALL belong to the Octo-mom (but they could.)  No - these are Mrs. Bogart's pupils and a fine bunch of half-pint matriculators they are.  The Professor was invited to read to the budding students and he regaled them with the last two year's worth of surf reports.  The only question they had was:  "Is Danger Boy a real person?"  "Yes, yes kiddies.  And be very afraid..."  The photos are before and after the Professor read the reports..  Guess which is which. A bit of sprinklation this morning as a storm system moves into the Southland.  We have 12 miles visibility and cloudy sometimes rainy skies.  Winds are offshore by
