Much Too Cold Tuesday Surf & Culture Rep[ort

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e have never been so happy to see a palm tree in our whole lives!  Dammit, it's cold up there in Idaho and it decided to snow everywhere we went.  Everywhere.  It snowed almost constantly un til St. George Utah.  The Salt Lake City area had 600 accidents in the TWO days we were on the road.  We saw cars in ditches, cars facing the wrong way and multiple skid/pile/crunches.  The Professor got out of the car in Vegas at Mandalay Bay and hugged the first palm tree he saw...  it was 40°, but it wasn't snowing! A beautiful morning here in the sunbelt!  25 miles visibility and clear, blue skies.  Winds were offshore by 3.2kts and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 45.0° (although various cars registered in the 30's on their thermometers!) and the water was 56.7° outside of Danger Boy's submarine.  Low tide was at 11:20am +1.1' and high tide will be at 5:04pm +3.8'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 273° at 2.0' an

Lost Boys & Co... L ivin' in the city... L ivin' in the country... H ope you all had a great Thanksgiving! A beautiful day for a "Black Friday."  20 miles visibility under sunny but hazy skies.  Winds are off by 4.1kts and the sea surface is smooth to glassy.  The air temp is a ch-ch-chilly 48.1° (Eagle, is an even chillier 21.2°, brrr...) and  the water has dropped a couple of ticks since Wednesday to 57.0°.  Get those booties out of mothballs!  Low tide starts early at 5:19am +2.9' and high tide will follow at 11:26am +5.4'.  The buoy is reading a 234° SW swell at 1.3'.  Looking like knee-slappers from here.  Get some coffee, settle down with the paper and we'll be back on Tuesday!  Oh yeah, go shopping! F rom Utah... We are in Utah and sharing the same temp's as you. Layered up and took Maggie on some nice snowshoe walks, but not planning to ski until tomorrow. I heard it was 47 at home and somehow that seems worse than 7 in Utah. Amazing

Happy Thanksgiving Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H appy Thanksgiving to all of you dedicated surfistas out there!  We're thankful that you guys are out there and that we have the privilege to be your buds!  Here's to another great fall-winter season! T he buoy is telling us that the swell has dropped precipitously, but it remains a beautiful morning with 25 miles visibility and clear skies.  Keeks is watching from the 11th floor of the Topaz International Trump Tower Suites and she's telling us that winds are calm and the sea surface is smooth.  She says it's a bit chilly on the lanai at 47.3° (it just happens to be 7° here in Eagle, Idaho) and the water temperature is 57.9°.  High tide is at 10:31am +5.9' and low tide will follow at 6:09pm -0.4'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a west swell out of 276° at 3.0'.  Looks like it's 1' to 3', but check your favorite spot and see if there's a bit of juice left. W e got a couple of reports yesterday, so lets take a look... Very

Lost Boys & Co... T he Professor impersonating the Coach as Karly Goins reads the signals.  She came in first, despite his coaching! P artly cloudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature was a reported 47.9° (can that be true?) and the water is an entirely believable 59.2°.  High tide is at 9:45am +6.2' and low tide will be at 5:19pm -0.6'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 273° at 4.6'.  We can only imagine that it's 3' to 5' and really good, until the wind comes up...  Well - is it?  T hank you for all of the reports . Yesterdays report inspired me to get wet .  Black ice is most  definitely a scary thing . 4 wheel drive is key . Snow tires helpful . Slow Down and leave extra space . Light and Ginger on the gas and brakes . I will sometimes put my car into second gear when starting from a standstill at a light . The lower gearing causes more friction , hence the tendency to slip

Lost Boys & Co... O n our first shot is M att Harris coming from behind to snag this little backside right.  He's one of the standouts for Bishop Montgomery this year. P artly cloudy skies with 15 miles visibility this morning (It snowed in Boise last evening.)  Winds are onshore by 3.1kts and  the sea surface is sporting a slight bump.  The air temperature is 55.0° and the water is 60.4°.  High tide is at 9:05am +6.4' and low tide will be at 4:35pm -0.7'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 210° at 3.6' and there are a fair amount of stalwarts out there in the 3' to 4' surf.  Get suited up and hit it! P ic #2 would be the Fab Burke Sisters, Al & Bec.  We were trying to catch some Rembrandt lighting at "Cool Hand Luke's Steak House."  Would you believe they didn't have any hard boiled eggs.  We asked the waitress and she said, "Looks like we have a failure to communicate here..."  Pic #3 is a shot of a young lady that B

Lost Boys & Co... T hanks to Gidget this morning for some help on the remote report!  15 miles visibility, with hazy sun this morning.  Winds are calm and the sea surface has a bit of roll to it.  The air temperature is 56.2° and the water has finally dropped below 60 to 59.9°.  High tide at 8:28am +6.4' and low tide will be at 3:50pm -0.7'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 272° at 5.2'.  Get your booties in the car and make sure you check it out! W e're in Boise (Eagle, actually) this morning and the weather is featuring a lot of puffy clouds (in the sky) and snow (on the ground.)  The news is warning everyone that a blizzard is coming tonight (along with Boomfwappa!)  They're even suggesting laying in a couple of days food supply! So we're snug and happy, but it wasn't exactly that way on our trip up.  Read on... I t started out fine - honest.  Snowy, but wet.  Traction was fine.  Everyone warned us about  the black ice.   Everyone.  And we

Lost Boys & Co... O kay, we're fools for the city.  Actually, we were wondering if you could see the surf from way up there?  The Topaz International Trump Tower Suites is only 11 floors high, too bade it's not like twenty.  We could see Malibu breaking! "S he's the triumph of sugar over diabetes." (said about one of Chuck's dates...  Ed.) O vercast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Lookin' like it might be trying to rain later on.  Winds are already onshore by 5.5kts and the sea surface is chopped up a bit.  The air temp is 56.8° and the water is 62.4°, but it's lookin' a bit gray and uninviting.  High tide's at 6:57am +5.9' and low tide will follow at 2:01pm -0.1'.  The buoy is reading a SW swell out of 214° at 2.6'.  We're calling it 2' and pretty dismal. T he surf had to be pretty bad!  Brother's was jammed with all the local boys who decided coffee and burritos were the best call.  Of course, they were ri

C lear skies and 22 miles visibility this morning.  Winds were calm at checkout and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temperature was 55.5° and the water was 63.0°, not too bad for November.  High tide was at 6:08am +5.3' and low tide will be at 12:56pm +0.8'.  The buoy is reading a SSW swell out of 194° at 2.6'.  It must be focused on us pretty straight because we're calling it 3', with some fatter outsides.  Hermosa looked good this morning, but there was a four-way contest with Redondo vs. Mira Costa and PV vs South, so it was pretty plugged.  On the other hand we hit the Cove again, but this time there was a guy out.  Yeah, a guy.  O

Lost Boys & Co... M orning Frank. Returned from the Drop Zone saturday. On our eight attempt we completed our formation! A 58 way! Attached is the official photo. Also a pic with the Army Golden Knights vertical team who flew with us on the record. It was a fantastic experience, way out of my comfort level. Saw things I could never imagine...  just thankful to be on the ground and alive. Heard you had some great surf while I was out in the desert. Paddled out with Sandy late afternoon yesterday. Fun but tiny. See ya in the line up. Andrew Staich (Sometimes fallin' seems like flyin' - for a little while...  Congrats to Andrew and his crew of crazy jumpers!  We were a little astonished at the Golden Knights.  Not that they had a woman, but that she looks like she's fourteen!  She's probably their best jumper!   Ed.) T he morning started out with less than a mile visibility and fog closing in fast.  Winds were offshore at 3.8kts and

A beautiful summer's morning as the sun boiled up in the east at 6:25am.  Visibility was 23 miles and the sky was cloudless.  Winds were offshore by 5.2kts and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 55.7° and the water is 61.5°.  High tide is at 5:21am +4.7' and low tide will be at 11:42am +2.0'.  We're working toward more radical tidal swings as we head toward the weekend and next week.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 265° at 2.6' to 3.0'.  We're calling it 2' to 3', but it's a bit walled and not very makeable.  That being said, we saw a couple at the Hermosa Pier that John Grannis manage

Lost Boys & Co... We forgot a few things in today's report: 1.  Update Day 2 State Record Attempts : Launching 60 ways! 3 planes in tight formation. At 16,500 ft with Oxygen. No completions but getting close. Tomorrow hitting it again . My slot on the big way is awesome. Not only is Kelli B in the same plane, she is last diver, I get to dive out after the group of flyers which is the base, out of the SkyVan's tail door. When I exit I go past in freefall the two other planes in formation! Usually the first on the formation. 8 seconds.  Man when the 50 people get on it has a life of its own. cool. Am the last wave to break off pulling at 2500 ft. Boy thats low.  Even the Army Parachute team, the Golden Knights are flying with us. A happy veterans day and founders day. On the way to the DZ. More attempts today. Peace and Love Andrew Staich (The whole thing sounds like it's too low to be jumping out of a Mini-Van's backdoor, let alone a Sky

A bright sunny day today with 25 miles visibility under clear skies.  Winds were offshore all morning and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temp was a chilly 49.6° at checkout and the water was 60.3°.  Low tide was at 7:38am +3.3' and high tide will follow at 1:07pm +4.4'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 265° at 3.0' and we're calling it 2' to 3' and a bit wally and crashy.  Doesn't look like it will hold for tomorrow, but don't take our word for it... Lost Boys & Co... O kay, some big waves last week - everywhere but here.  One of the places that got some mackers was Mavericks.  We have no idea who is on the right, but on the left is Todd Tisue.  We were wondering if O'Neill makes wetsuits with more room for cojones for places like this?  A fter the wind blew most of the night, last night, we awoke to clear skies and 25 miles visibility.  Winds had turned offshore and were variable to 7.1kts.  With all that cold air coming down from the north it was 49.6° at checkout and the water was 62.2°.  Now that's only down 2° from yesterday, but it seemed like 5°.  High tide was at 10:14am +6.1' and it looks like it might break all the way through.  Low tide is at 5:48pm -0.3', opening things up for some afternoon action.  The 46221 Buoy is reading a west swell out of 276° at 3.9' and it must be hitting us pretty square, since it was 3' to 4' with some solid 5' outsiders.  Maybe we'll get a couple of g
