New Year's Eve Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W ell, here it is.  Another year running down to the short strokes and everyone is trying to decide if we should celebrate or hunker down and wait until the dust clears.  Now we could be in Idaho (#1) and it would be 28º and we would be up to our knees in snow.  But here on the Left Coast it's sunny and bright and we have at least 10 miles visibility with some fluffy clouds skidding by on the 6 to 10kt winds out of the west.  The air at checkout was 43.8º and the water is right there at 57.7º and not sporting frozen chunks.  High tide was at 6:33am +6.7' and low tide drains way out at 1:51pm -1.3'.  There's a west swell out of 264º at 4.3' and it was a choppy, frothy 4' and the wind was having it's way with the swell.  Maybe mañana.  Supposed to be offshore... O n the pier we find our version of the "Three Wise Monkeys."  Originally from Japanese lore, it's been adopted universally and we decided it was perfect for not com

Lost Boys & Co... (#1) H ere we have an excellent example of an aubade written by the wind in the runic style.  It is a celebration of the light chasing away the darkness of the night.  It also suggests the disappointment that lovers feel as the light of the morning ends their long romantic night.  Kinda perfect for these long winter's nights... I t's a Covid vs Hepatitis kind of morning with reduced visibility, clouds and rain (heavy at times).  Winds are out of the SE by 13 to 15kts and the sea surface is brushed smooth. If you want a laugh, pull up the Malibu cam and check out how blown out the 'bu is this morning.  It's 55.5º in the damp air and 58.1º in the water.  High tide was at 5:50am +6.2' and low tide follows at 1:05pm -0.6'.  We have a south swell out of 172º at 5.2', but it's at such an angle our surf is in the 2' range with an occasional three footer.  Let's give it a look mañana... Lost Boys & Co... P hoto #1 doesn't quite do this morning's conditions justice.  First, you can see Jay standing there on the right, after having caught a sweet little left-hander from the middle all the way to where he's standing.  But we didn't get him on the wave😟.  Then, there's the wind.  It's blowing offshore at 5 to 7kts and the sea surface is brushed smooth.  This is making the already chilly 43.8º air even chillier.  The water is a lot warmer in contrast to the air, but it's not exactly balmy at 57.6º.  High tide was at 5:09am +5.7' and low tide will be at 12:16pm +0.2'.  We have a nice little west swell out of 271º at 3.3' and it was 2' to 3' with some brisk little corners to warm the cockles of your frigid heart... B ut if you really wanted to be cold, you could've joined Danger Girl, LoLa and the Professor on their trek through the Big Apple.  Here (#2) the ladies are shown at Il Cortile Restaurante quaffing some Chia

Lost Boys & Co... W ell, we're back and now we all have to deal with it.  Whatever it is.  But first here's what the water quality guy saw (#1) and how he dealt with it.  Understand that he NEVER got out of the truck.  He looked at the outfall, wrote an "F" in his book and peeled himself outta there... M eanwhile, in Paterson New Jersey there are these falls (#2) that gave rise to the industrial revolution in this country.  Some of the early founding fathers realized the potential in this falling water and some of the first water powered mills and factories were located on these falls.  Does the name Alexander Hamilton ring a bell? W inds out of the west this morning by 8to 10kts and the sea surface was choppy and uneven.  We'll cut right to the chase and the swell was from the west at 268º at 6.9' and it was 5' to 7' and great for mind surfing, but not so great for actually getting in the water and doing it.  One of the only exceptions was Sapphir

Lost Boys & Co... T his morning the drain at the Hermosa Pier finally blew open (#1)!  Good news, bad news...  The rain and storm conditions might very well dig some holes in the sand bars and create some new ones and the runoff will help the rip into the office, but the pollution in the system that's been building up for months is now in the water and it'll be a judgement call about when it will be safe to get back in the water.  Rainy conditions and at times limited visibility.  Winds whipping out of the SW at 10 to 20kts and the sea surface is white-capped and choppy.  The air temperature was 53.7º and the water is 59.5º.  High tide was at 6:05am +5.5' and low tide will be at 1:02pm +0.5'.  Crazy waves out of the SW 220º at 9.2' and breaking to almost 10'.  Here's one (#2) rolling through the office... W ent down the rabbit hole of old surf photos on the internet the other day and found these two. #3.  Bing Copeland (Bing Surfboards), Bev Morgan (one

Lost Boys & Co... S anta came early to Burnsy this year!  In a turn of events that suggested she should buy a couple of lottery tickets, Burnsy won this hot pink surfboard (#1) in a raffle to aid breast cancer awareness.  She received no small amount of advice on how many fins to employ, size and shape of fins and position of her feet.  Here she is (#2) with her retinue of advisors... M eanwhile we were trying to make the surf look good while watching Trevor Russell get worked while his mother was trying to get him out of the water and back to school.  9 miles visibility under cold cloudy skies and the wind stayed offshore all day long.  The air was 50.0º at checkout and the water dropped a degree to 59.7º.  High tide was at 5:36am +5.3' and low tide will be at 12:21pm +1.0'.  It was a SW swell out of 233º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 5' and designed to lop your head off if you couldn't duck fast enough...  Supposed to rain like hell tomorrow... It's Our Fault Friday Surf Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O kay, not much to see here (#1)...  Yeah, well, that's not quite the case.  That sharp rise to the left is on the Pacific Tectonic Plate moving toward the east.  Where we're standing is on the Continental Plate that is catching the Pacific Plate.  That oasis of palm trees is growing up through the crack in the earth that has exposed water rich strata.  Well, what the hell do they call this area anyway?  Friends, this geological curiosity is the San Andreas Fault!  Yes, the very fault that folks believe will be home to the "Big One" and certainly numerous little ones.  Can we go now... L ow tide this morning at 8:41am +2.8' and it was a bit dredgy (#2).  High tide is at 2:06pm +4.4' and it's a matter of when the wind will turn.  In the AM it was offshore by 4 to 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was pretty chilly at 48.1º and the water felt downright cozy at 60.1º.  We have a SW swell out of 230º at 4.3' and it was 4&#

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have three hearty souls (who are obviously from somewhere else) tackling this morning's surf.  As you can see it was cloudy with about 10miles visibility.  Winds were persistently onshore by 10 to 14kts and the sea surface was chopped up a bit.  The air temp was 55.5º and the water is 60.4º and the wind should knock that down a bit.  Low tide at 6:54am +3.0' and the high tide will be at 12:41pm +5.0'.  We have a west swell out of 264º at 3' and it was about that with these three guys bobbing around in the soup.  The good news is that this could set-up a nice wind swell event for the morning!  Stay tuned and give it a check in the am.  The kids will be out at 8 sharp because I'm gonna blow the whistle... T alk about a whistle!  (#2) Is the iconic Marilyn statue that has been a landmark in Palm Springs for some time.  We headed out to the desert at the behest of Steve And Christine Jones, friends from high school and they spared no

Lost Boys & Co... A total of over 200 years and not a single pedicure (#1)... Truth in advertising (#2).  That's our motto... Overcast, cloudy this morning with about 5 miles visibility.  Winds wee onshore by 3 to 5kts and the sea surface had a bit of bump to it.  The air temp was 55.2º and the water is 61.5º.  High tide was at 7:33am +7.1' and low tide follows at 2:41pm -1.4'.  There's a WSW swell out of 255º at 2.6' and it was 3' to 4' and not enough corners to make it look inviting.  That and the cold.  Hey, we have a hood! Grabbed some images from Brendan Simmons and his trip with the familia to Waco.  #3 Looks like Dylan Roa wrapping a right with a flashy backside rip.  Thinking he could've made the 360º!  Then there's Jordan Romero on a little backside/backlit tube.  Looks like kinda a great place to set up a tripod and shoot away!  Wait, this is Texas...  Shoot photos!! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

She Ran All The Way Home Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... B urnsy ran all the way home, in the fog, to get her camera and catch this photogenic little lefthander (#1) from the pier.  We might have looked at it and thought, "Nice little left, but hard to see."  She spied something entirely different... C old out there, with not much heat coming through the thick and persistent overcast.  Visibility 2 miles.  Winds were light onshore by 1 to 2kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy.  The air temp was 54.0º and the water is 61.3º and felt a lot warmer than the air.  High tide was at 6:65am +6.7' and low tide follows at 1:57pm -0.9'.  We have a WSW swell out of 245º and it was 3' and looking for some sand bars to break on and some holes to paddle out through.  Otherwise it was perfect wally Hermosa...  Try again mañana... Lost Boys & Co... O kay, everyone who's tired of this fog raise your hand...  wait we're still counting.  Then, all who like it, raise your other hand.  Hmmm, maybe our sample is too small...  S o we sent the kids out into the fog (#1) with about a hundred yards visibility and a hundred percent humidity.  They were game, but we had to count them going in and coming out.  Winds were light offshore and we think the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 52.5º and the water jumped to 62.1º, but at eight sharp the air temperature dropped by three degrees and chilled everyone to the bone.  High tide was at 6:24am +6.2' and low tide was at 1:11pm -0.1' dipping precipitously for all you clam diggers.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 2.6' and it was 2' to 3' with some bigger outsides. A s you well know we're merely guerilla photographers, not like Burnsy, Robin, Brendan, Kevin, Paul or the list goes on...  But we liked this image (#2) from the

Lost Boys & Co... T he ghastly crumb foggies this morning (#1) with less than a quarter mile visibility and all surfaces wet to the touch.  Winds were offshore and unkindly perfect given the atmospheric conditions.  The air temperature was 49.0º and the water is a reluctant 61.9 (probably embarrassed that it's not a full 62.)  High tide was at 5:54am +5.6' and low tide would be at 12:27pm +0.7'.  It's a west swell out of 265º at 2.0' and it was 2' to 3' but not fabulous enough to lure us out...  Maybe mañana... S o deep in the heart of Texas, we find our crew deep in the heart of this freshwater, man-made tube (#2).  But we do not take these things lightly, despite our snobbish tendencies to imagine only surfing on the ocean is really surfing.  That might have all ended when people started surfing the web.  Like Vonnegut says, "So it goes..." Lost Boys & Co... I f Botticelli had seen Jah Morgan flying along this wave on the nose, he might have had a totally different take on the "Birth of Venus."  We took this from the Barahona site, so if any one in the familia knows who took it, we'd like to give them credit.  Also Jah, Christian and Gabe left this morning for Waco to surf some fresh water tubes!  Maybe we'll get some news from the Lone Star state...  S ome creeping foggies this morning, with sometimes less than a quarter mile visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 49.0º and the water is 61.9º  High tide was at 5:28am +5.0' and low tide will be at 11:42am +1.6'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 2.6' and it was 3' with some 4' outsides, but steep and a bit walled...  Quite like Hermosa... Lost Boys & Co... P hoto #1 about sums up the conditions this morning.  Cloudless skies with a bit of smog on the horizon.  Offshore winds at 3 to 5kts were brushing the manes of the small waves.  The air was a chilly 48.5º and the water was 62.2º.  Low tide was at 7:50am +3.6' and high tide was at 1:00pm +4.3', with not much of a tidal disparity.  We have a west swell out of 261º at 2.0' and that's probably why things were a bit walled up even as the tide filled in... L ike daughter, like father (#2), SeaWolf made an appearance this morning on his legendary "Fire Woman" Takayama Model T.  SeaWolf was one of the founding members of the Lost Boys Surf & Culture Club and was present for some of the early forays into mainland Mex.  He's currently living in Washington and he was happy to be in some water that didn't have ice floating around in it.  Great to see him in the water... W hat are we Thankful for?  One of the things would be the crew at B
