Lost Boys & Co... T his in this afternoon:  Professor, Danger boy just called me to say he would be home late because his friend "rented a backhoe and invited me to come over and take it for a spin" I'm very afraid that he might interpret that literally... DB's B (No report yet on DB's backhoe adventure....  Ed.) L ate report tonight!  The observations come from this morning at 7am.  Visibility 10 miles, under partly cloudy skies, clearing by mid-morning.  Winds were offshore out of the SE by 5.5kts and the sea surface was smooth before the wind picked up at 10am.  The air temp was 60.6° and the water was 63.3°.  High tide was at 8:06am +3.6' and low tide followed at 1:13pm +1.5'.  The buoy was reading a 3.0 swell out of 263 and we had some nice waves in the waist to chest high vicinity.  We rode some nice ones with Birdie, his cousin from England Chris, Paul Brede, and Buffalo Holmes.  It was nice for a spring morning wind swell! Lost Boys & Co... W e headed down to Hermosa this morning and took a short walk on a long pier.  As always we checked the board (see photo) to see what the conditions were according to the lifeguards.  Lo-and-behold we scoped the water temp and it said (as you can see) 67°!  Being skeptics we didn't think that was possible.  So we knocked on the door and Rodney himself answers.  "Hey Rodney, is that temp correct?" "Well, yeah, I took it myself." "But it says 67°!" "Yeah, kinda warm for this time of year." "The buoy says it's 64°!" "Yeah, but that's way the hell out there." "How deep did you let the thermometer go?" "About 3'...  maybe 2'..." "Too bad there's no waves..." "When the waves come, the water gets colder...  What - do you want it all?" "Er, ah, yeah..." S o we have overcast skies and 5 miles visibility.  Winds are already heavy onshore by

Lost Boys & Co... S o have you stopped shakin' yet?  It's always interesting when we have an earthquake.  Where you were?  What you were doing?  How strong did you imagine it to be?  Boomfwappa tells us that he was driving and he noticed the light poles going up and down !  Here on the 11th floor of the Topaz International Trump Tower Suites we experienced a concussion, then some energetic rocking.  Didn't last very long, but long enough to let you know who's in charge.  Mother Nature - 1,  LA - 0... A foggy, overcast morning here in the Southland.  Looks like it might clear up later, but it's pretty heavy at the moment.  Winds are calm and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 60.8° and the water is a very nice 64.9°.  Low tide is at 11:23am +0.9' and high tide will be at 6:13pm +4.4'.  The swell has really dropped after 3 weeks of pretty good waves.  The buoy is reading a 2.0' swell out of 196° and we're calling the surf barely 1

Lost Boys & Co... A splendid morning here in the Southland... This news just came to us this morning: IMPORTANT! STING GINTHER HAS SHED HIS BOOTIES FOR THE SPRING/SUMMER. HE HAS NO INTENTION OF PUTTING THEM ON AGAIN UNTIL OCTOBER AT THE EARLIEST. THAT IS ALL. N ow he's still wearing the PolarTech™, but it's only a matter of time before he gets down to raw rubber. You'll hear it here first, when he does! Semi-seriously, he got some great waves this morning at Topaz, where he and the Professor hung with some of the local thrashers. Corey, the polisher from Mangialli was out on the Elia, wooden plank and was getting some pretty great rides. We'll have to get some pics of one of these things - you'll be interested and you might want to make one! L ooking good this morning with 10 miles visibility, under hazy but bluish skies.. Winds were offshore by 7.8kts and the sea surface was smooth, polished by those offshores that blew all night. The air temp is

Lost Boys & Co... T his morning we have a shot of some feets.  These feet are practicing how it might be to hang ten.  You can kinda imagine the nose of the board there under the feets.  So could we.  We took the photo thinking that if it ever happened we know what it was... A really beautiful morning here in the So. Bay..  Visibility is 15 miles and the sky is clear.  Winds started off the morning offshore by 1.9kts and smooth conditions.  Of course the wind came up and now it's blowing about 12kts, straight out of the west and it's pretty choppy.  At 7am the air temp was 59.1° and the water is a toasty 62..8°  This morning is the first that we've been inclined to agree with the water temp.  It was pretty nice with a shorty.  Low tide was at 8:01am +0.2' and high tide will follow at 3:40pm +3.2'.  The buoy is reading a 3.9' swell out of 273° and were calling it waist to chest high.  T here were some nice waves along the avenues and Topaz and Sapphire were

Lost Boys & Co... D o you know how much time you can waste on "Photo Booth?"  A lot.  Take our word for it, a lot! L ight overcast this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The wind turned fairly early, but it was good before it switched.  The air temperature at 7am was 59.9° and the water was 61.2°.  Low tide was at 7:09am +0.0' snd high tide was at 2:22pm +3.1'.  The buoy was reading a 3.9' swell out of 272° and we're calling it 3' to 4'. A rather moving eulogy from Paver: Thank you for the condolences, Professor.  Mark [major --- as differentiated from Mark, minor aka Maleko] was nearly 90.  Some of the Kings Canyon crew may remember my dad & his wife camped there with us once quite a few years ago.  For those interested, here's the obit I wrote: COLE, Mark Born New York City , Sept. 18, 1919; died Ventura, CA , April 29, 2009 as the result of a severe stroke. Lost Boys & Co... T hese are the Box Brothers.  They have their own surfboard.  Buck Delameter rides for them.  It gets sanded and polished tomorrow.  One day soon, he will pick it up - then, he'll want to get it wet.  That's when the trouble will start. T he Tiki Torches have just come on and we finally got a minute or two to send out the report.  The following are the 7am readings:  10 miles visibility under partly cloudy skies.  Some areas of morning fog.  Winds started out calm and quickly turned onshore.  It started out bumpy and got worse.  The air temperature was 58.8° and the water is 61.2° at the buoy.  We surfed Hermosa Beach and it felt like it was getting close to 60, but we're not quite sure it was there.  Low tide was at 6:23am -0.3' and hide tide was at 1:15pm +3.2'.  The buoy is reading a 3.9' swell out of 270° and the waves were a bit bumpy at 3' to 4'.  A good workout and a pretty spring morning. O ur condolences go out to Tony &

Lost Boys & Co... H i All,   Just back from Ericiera in Portugal, I highly recommend it, check out Riberia D'Ilhas in the picture!   Kind regards, Mark ( John Boy) Walton O kay, before you read any further, we can tell you that the surf in the South Bay this morning bears no resemblance to Riberia D'Ilhas.  We can also tell you that our correspondent John-Boy Walton, probably shredded those waves all morning, had a pint and then shredded them all afternoon.  If you're ever in Ireland look him up, but be prepared for a ragin' good time and probably some big Irish waves! U nder overcast skies we have 5 miles visibility.  Looks like it should break up around noon, with some afternoon clouds.  Winds are out of the SSE by 5.6kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 58.8° and the water is 59.5°.  We caution you that we take the readings from the NDBC Buoy that's off of Redondo by about 2 or three miles.  For some reason the water

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know some people are hard at work, like Birdie here, glassing the Box Brother's Buck Model .  He and Oscar we're coating about 8 blades a piece this morning, while Jose was in the foam cavern mowing a similar number.  Is it work or is it art? B eautiful morning!  Ten miles visibility with a bit of haze on the deck.  Winds were offshore by 5.3kts and the sea surface was smoothly rolling.  The air temp is 59.1° and the water is 58.3°.  Taking a look at the buoy it's showing us a rapid increase in the water temp.  It went from 57.4° at 6:30am to 60.2° at 12:15pm.  It would be nice if the warm water really got serious and gave us a break.  High tide was at 10:04am +3.8' and low tide will follow at 2:59pm +1.7'.  Not too much tidal change.  The buoy is reading a 4.3' swell out of 270° and we're calling it 4' to 5'.  Some good waves out there!  Some big rips though, so watch yourself. O ur second picture shows Danger Boy chilla

Lost Boys & Co... Y es, that is a pretty damned perfect rail line there!  Another deluxe Barahona ready to come off the line.  It gets glassed tomorrow at 9am.  If you're interested in watching, the Professor is heading down to take some pics.  Birdie will be officiating.  Give the Professor a call for field trip info! A beautiful morning ahead of us.  Sunny skies and 20 miles visibility.  Winds are strongly offshore by 5.9kts and the sea surface has a rolling bump to it.  The air temp is 60.1°and the water is 57.9°.  High tide is at 9:19am +4.0' and low tide will follow at 2:30pm +1.3'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a west swell out of 271° at 4.6'.  We're calling the surf 4' to 5' with some even bigger outsides.  T opaz and Sapphire were working this morning and we have a report from the Coach that he was going out at Torrance.  Betcha' he got more than a few lefts at his semi-secret spot!  Grab that rail! Lost Boys & Co... Above we have Birdie and the Professor after a good session at Sapphire.  Naw, it really wasn't breaking.  You know Sapphire, it never breaks.  But despite the fact that it wasn't breaking they paddled around and got some good exercise and there were some little waves *smirk*... The morning started out with some sun and then a bit of fog crept through.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was rolling and then when the wind picked up it had a pronounced tack.  The air temperature was 57.9° and the water was 56.1°, but felt closer to 60.  High tide was at 8:31am +4.1' and low tide was at 1:58pm +1..0'.  The swell continues to pick up and at 8am it was 4.9' out of 270°.  We called it 4' to 5', but this evening the buoys are showing a 6.6' swell.  We checked Topaz and it was looking head high.  If the wind and tide cooperate, it could be good in the morning. Hope you all had a good Cinco de Mayo!  It was kinda quiet, but that works so

Lost Boys & Co... D own in Mexico there's this little village that only Tyrone James knows about.  This reef is know locally as T.J.'s Reef.  The locals pronounce it Tee-Yays Reef, but you know it when you see it.  It's rocky, it gets big and there's funny fish in the water.  He's there right now...  and you're not... H azy sun this morning with 15 miles visibility.  The wind turned early and by 9am it was 6.3kts out of the west.  There's a storm out there at 295° so the wind was just waiting to kick up some big tack.  The air temperature was 57.0° and the water was a springer 59.9°, getting all the way up to 62 this afternoon.  High tide was at 6:37am +4.3' and low tide was at 12:47pm +0.4'.  The buoy was reading the swell at 4.3' out of 268°.  The waves were a solid 4' to 5' and actually pretty good shape off the high tide.  You didn't have a lot of choice because the wind came up so quick, but earlier might be better than late

Lost Boys & Co... A s you can see from the photo Buck Delameter is in town and he and the Professor were ripping the Hermosa Pier this morning.  It was sloppy, but hey, they're used to sloppy - sloppy is their middle name.  No, wait...  Actually their middle names are Kent and Robert.  So anyway despite all the sloppiness the water is getting warmer and they had their own fair share of fun... T he weatherman is calling for some showers tonight, but in the meantime we have hazy sun with 10 miles visibility.  The winds were offshore by 7.8kts with smooth sea conditions.  The air temp was 51.5° and the water was 59.2°.  Low tide was at 10:11am -0.3' and hide tide will follow at 5:25pm +3.9'.  The swell is out of 225° at 3.0' and we're calling the surf 2' to 3'.  Nothing to write home about, but fun none-the-less. B uck gets his stick shaped this afternoon, so there should be good waves until he picks it up in a couple of weeks!  So wax up and be ready... &
