Maraca Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

Hi All,

Just back from Ericiera in Portugal, I highly recommend it, check out Riberia D'Ilhas in the picture!

Kind regards,

Mark ( John Boy) Walton

Okay, before you read any further, we can tell you that the surf in the South Bay this morning bears no resemblance to Riberia D'Ilhas.  We can also tell you that our correspondent John-Boy Walton, probably shredded those waves all morning, had a pint and then shredded them all afternoon.  If you're ever in Ireland look him up, but be prepared for a ragin' good time and probably some big Irish waves!

Under overcast skies we have 5 miles visibility.  Looks like it should break up around noon, with some afternoon clouds.  Winds are out of the SSE by 5.6kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 58.8° and the water is 59.5°.  We caution you that we take the readings from the NDBC Buoy that's off of Redondo by about 2 or three miles.  For some reason the water didn't feel like 59° this morning.  We're thinking it was probably more like 57.  A little chilly..  Low tide is at 5:40am -0.6' and high tide will be at 12:20pm +3.3'.  The buoy is reading a 3.0' swell out of 268° and we're calling it 2' to 3'.

This morning was the smallest day we've had in 2 weeks.  Now a couple of those days were blown out, but we've had a really respectable run of surf.  The swell isn't totally over but we're thinking that tomorrow there won't be a ring of white water around the breakwall.  We rode Sapphire 5 days in a row and on Saturday Birdie and Jose from Becker were in the line-up as well as Malukka, Buffalo Kevin, Danger Boy, Sting Ginther and the Professor.  We're not getting paid to be Danger Boy's publicist, but he was on fire.  He took off late on what looked like a hopelessly closed out right and blew past the whole ugly start and turned it into a crankin' little skater.  This was also after he rocked the Free World Friday night to the Wrynkles at Keegan's. Sunday we hit Torrance with Tyrone James (currently in Mexico,) the Rock and some of his buds from SB.  There were some ear-high thick ones that made for some pretty long rides.  TJ got a left that ushered him out of the zip code!

Meanwhile, on the road in the Florida Keys...

The surf was flat in South Beach. I recommend the medium crab claws at Joe's Stone Crabs. They've been getting right since 1913.

Duval St is rockin in the Keys.

Water temp a surprising 78 degrees.
Big Wave Dave (Stromath)
