Escondido Saturday Special Reporto

Lost Boys & Co...   All of the coast is abuzz with the earthquake in Chile...  We appear to be out of the path of the tidal wave, although that isn´t stopping everyone from conjecturing about the possibilities.   Waves were smaller today, but extremely powerful.  Yesterday the sets were about headhigh and would guillotine you if you were just a lttle late.  My board didn´t make it until yesterday afternoon, so I was using Don Souther´s 8´6¨spear.  I was going really fast, but the waves seem to be justy as fast!  Today I had my board so I got a couple of sweet ones.  You gotta have a fair amount of respect for this place!  I can see how it got it´s reputation.   Clear today with light offshore breezes turning on shore around 10am (early for here.)  Air temp is around 75 and the water is 75-80.  Pretty damned nice!   Okay, we´re off to the mercado!  It´s market day and we have shopping to do!   ¨When the surf breaks, we´ll fix it...¨  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... J ust a couple more manhole covers for your consideration.  Carol, did a bit of research: "The Redondo Beach manhole cover is a good example of art in the ordinary and it 's made in the USA! I looked up East Jordan Iron Works ( from Michigan ) and saw in their Cutstom Logo Covers' photo gallery, one from Houston. Strange- it looks like a characature of a pelican and some sort of mutant. The motto on the cover says "Clean Water-Clear Choice."  Thanks for the diversion from my lunchtime homework efforts :)" (Take a look at the East Jordan Iron Works site.  The cool thing is that they not only have manhole covers, but all kinds of swag as well.  Everything from hats and jackets, to pens and small cast reproductions of manhole covers!  Sounds like a good place to go on a field trip...  Ed.) C loudy this morning with about 12 miles visibility.  We got a few drops on the windshield as we cruised along the shore, but nothing daunting.  Winds

Lost Boys & Co... W ater, water, everywhere... but how does it get there?  Well, it travels around quite a bit underground.  This just happens to be one of the places they monitor it. M eanwhile, rolling around on the street we have 20 miles visibility, under partly cloudy skies.  Winds are offshore by 5.7kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is a chilly 46.9° and the water is 59.4°.  Low tide is at the south end of the morning at 11:54am -0.2' and high tide will be at 6:55pm +3.2'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 266° at 3.9' and the surf is 3' to 4'.  Most of the folks thought it was going to be quite a bit bigger, if not better.  We'll have to wait and see if things get better arranged on Wednesday morning. O ur second shot is yesterday about 3:30pm at Manhattan Beach.  As you recall the winds had been on-shore all day and then suddenly as the front passed through, things changed around about 180°.  The temps went up about 10°

Lost Boys & Co... U ntil recently, it never really struck us as to how far a municipality might go to emblazon it's name on public property.  Here we have two of our favorite cities showing their mastheads on your basic manhole covers.  That got us to noticing many of the covers that adorn the access to the netherworld of underground utilities.  There are tons of them!  So this week we're going to feature some of this utilitarian ornamentation.  When you start to notice them, you'll find there are really some artistic pieces out there.  And it's not like you have to collect anything and put it on your wall.  They're out there, waiting to be appreciated once you step outside! S till windier than shit out there today!  The hawk is out of the west by 19.4kts and gusting to over 25.  The skies are clear and we have maximum visibility (at least 25 miles.)  The sea surface is choppy with considerable whitecaps.  At checkout time the air temperature was 53.6° and the

Lost Boys & Co... W e were wondering about the visibility this morning and then we realized we could see Catalina from the Hermosa Pier.  Catalina is 26 miles away, so it's at least that clear.  But we were really wondering about the outfall there in the foreground of today's pic.  They have it marked with a nice bright yellow cone, so you can't accidentally run into it.  Then there are those handrails so you can stand there and watch the water gush out, while you hold on for dear life.  Considerate of them really... since it's supposed to rain all weekend long... S o, like we said, there's 26 miles visibility under cloudy, marginally threatening clouds.  Winds were offshore at checkout time at 1.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 55.0° and the water is still 59.7°.  Low tide is at 6:18am +1.2' and high tide will follow at 11:59am +3.0'.  The buoy is reading a pretty consistent 2.6' to 3.0' swell out of the SW at 235°.  We

Lost Boys & Co... A touch of gray this morning and we wend our way about the So. Bay.  The weather is supposed to be closing in over the next couple of days, so if you need a little outdoor time, better grab it soon!  1.5 miles visibility under a distant sun.  Winds were offshore at checkout, by 3.1kts, but turned early (9am.)  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 53.3° and the water is still 59.7°.  Low tide starts off the morning at 5:22am +1.1' and high tide is also an am at 11:09am +3.6'.  The buoy is reading a W swell out of 265° at 3.9'.  We're calling it a solid 3' with bigger outsides. W e hung with Don Swift and Leonard Treadwell this morning.  We were basically set to check out Hermosa when they walked down.  They were probably 11 or 12 when they started surfing Topaz and the Professor was a big high schooler.  Funny how that goes.  Anyway, they basically talked us into going out at Topaz and before the wind kicked up, we got some nice ones a

Lost Boys & Co... C an you believe this weather?  It's been nicer than most summer days.  That's why we've been counting all these sunny days as "summer" and all the rainy cold days as "winter."  Getting ready for a run down to Mexico, we're working on tanning our feets.  Should we run into Sub-Commandante Marcos, we are planning to do a full interview! T wenty three miles visibility this morning, under a hazy, but confident sun.  Winds are offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature at checkout was 55.2° and the water is a remarkable 59.4°.  High tide is at 10:30am +4.2' and low tide will be at 4:39pm +0.7'.  Our favorite buoy (#46221) is telling us that we have a WSW swell out of 256° at 3.3'.  We're calling it 3' to 4' and poor to fair.  Hermosa was a bit bigger, but wallier and crashier as well.  Knob Hill provided some nice lefts and was just about the best place for the rising tide.  Stay

Lost Boys & Co... C ough, cough, sniffle, wheeze...  No, we're actually better!  You should'a seen us Sunday.  We were good enough to make it down for the checkout and catch Andrew on this tight little right at Sapphirua and Don Swift on this yawning peeler just on the other side of the jetty.  The waves were a bit bigger on the Topaz side, but Andrew was catching three to one at Sapphire.  Speaking of Andrew, he's entering his screen play in a competition!  Dude, we KNOW he's going to win!  Besides, even if he comes in second, he still shreds! A nother beautiful day, with 25 miles visibility and just a bit of haze on the horizontal.  Winds are offshore by 3.9kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature is 51.5° and the water is 59.4°.  As far as the water temps this year, it has been one of the warmest winters we can ever remember.  Let's hope this ushers us into an equally warm summer!  High tide is at 9:57am +4.7' and low tide will be at 4:18p

Lost Boys & Co... S o here we have a photo of this group of Native Americans chillin' outside of the neighborhood furniture store.  They gave us an icy stare, so we moved on...  Then we ran into Lady Godiva, or someone who had a passing resemblance. Obviously, we did nothing to melt her frozen heart... H azy skies this morning with 20 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.9kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 48.7° and the water was 58.8°.  High tide was at 7:57am +5.6' and low tide will follow at 2:51pm -0.6'.  The surf is coming out of the west 261° at 2.3'.  We're calling it 2' to 3', but the tide is really making it tough to get some of the bigger waves without crashing into the sand. S peaking of crashing into the sand...  Whenever you go surfing with Danger Boy and Gidget, odds are that someone is going to visit the ER.  This morning was Gidget's turn, as she surfed her way to the beach on a waist high roller, then fell

Lost Boys & Co... L arry Moch sent in our first photo today.  Take a look and cast your vote...  We're thinking it might be Tyler Russell getting a little air on this little wave.  Actually, this wave is little only when considering how big it's been lately!  Tell us if you recognize the featured surfer! A nother beautiful day!  20 miles visibility, with some high clouds scudding along the ether.  Winds have been off all day, blowing 7.4kts at checkout, with the sea surface smooth and rolling.  The air temp was a chilly 48.9°, but better than yesterday's 41.2°.  The water remains relatively toasty at 58.6°.  High tide is at 7:25am +5.6' and low tide will follow at 2:27pm -0.6'.  The buoy is reading a 3.3' swell out of the west at 270° and we're calling it 3' to 4' and excellent shape.  We surfed Hermosa, ninth and a half street and it looked like the wave machine had just been oiled.  There were even a couple of cylinders, if you could make your

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how sometimes the water is ice-cold and the toilet seat is freezing?  This is taking it to the max with the entire bathroom made out of ice.  Don't worry, this wasn't the cabin (otherwise you can be sure LoLa and Rebecca wouldn't be mugging for the camera.)  It was part of the Ice Carnival they hold annually in McCall, Idaho.  Isn't Idaho a funny word!  Say it over and over...  Anyway, even though they're hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean, they managed to feature this whale of a sculpture as well! G reat conditions today!  Crystal blue skies after yesterday's rain and unlimited visibility.  Winds out of the SSE by 8.3kts and the sea surface was sporting a light tack.  The air was a bit chilly at 41.2° at checkout time, but the water was 58.8° making it not so bad.  High tide was at 6:49am +5.5' and low tide is this afternoon at 1:59pm -0.6'.  The #46221 Buoy is registering a 3.9' swell out of 266° W and we'

I t's stormy this afternoon, but the morning started out partly cloudy and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were at 9.7kts from the SE, before they turned WSW and kicked up a bit of chop.  The air temperature was 51.6° and the water was an honest 59.0°.  High tide was at 6:06am +5.3' and low tide will be at 1:28pm -0.5'.  The buoy is reading a 3.9' swell straight out of the west at 270°.  We're calling it 3' to 4' and the tide was bouncing it a bit before the wind ragged it out.  Let's see what the storm brings, in terms of wave height and conditions in the morning! O ur second shot is a speedometer!  Kinda small, kinda cute, kinda old.  We're hoping Birdie might be able to help us on this one...  (Don't worry Birdie, we'll run som

Lost Boys & Co…   S o we're still in Boise this morning and we'll be heading out this evening.   Some great skiing at Bogus Basin and Brundage Mountain, not to mention some great grazing at Steamers, downtown McCall and Lardo's out by the cabin.   But first, let's look at the surf…   P artly cloudy skies and 15 miles visibility.   Winds are offshore out of the east by 7.8kts and the sea surface is smooth.   The air temp is 53.7 ° and the water is 59.0 ° .   High tide is at 5:13am 5.2' and low tide will be at 12:51pm -0.7'.   The buoy is reading a west swell out of 263 ° at 5.2'.   The surf is 4' to 6' and you need to find just the right place to make it work for you!   Y es, Lardo's!   Lardo's has been a fixture in McCall since the 1920's and they're still acting as though prohibition might come back unannounced.   The Professor started out the evening right, by falling on his ass coming down from the parking lot.

Lost Boys & Co... S o Monday comes and the Professor is checking out the surf.  Even though it's high tide he decides that Topaz has some possibilities.   In fact, there are some waves that look pretty good size on the outside, off the jetty.  So he paddles out and proceed to have an absolutely horrible session.  He looked like someone who had read about surfing, but never actually had done it himself.  He had it alone for about a half an hour and then some other folks came out, probably to see first hand if he was okay or just delusional.  Trying to resuscitate his reputation he decided he had to take one of those outsides next to the jetty.  It began as a nice right, a little bigger than head high, and then it just blew apart on the inside.  He dove off.  Just before he broke to the surface and covered his head, the board (which had started out behind him) circled around, dove about five feet and then clobbered him in the nose.  It looked like he had stepped on a rake.  Actu
