What's A Spill Between Friends Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T his (#1) is what happens when you have a fire hydrant fail and it sends tons of water into the ocean.  Fortunately, we have recently had a significant amount of rainfall so the water wasn't as contaminated as it might have been from all the street detritus.  Still, it made for a pretty dramatic difference between the salt and fresh water! 20 Miles visibility this morning and another beautiful late summer's day.  Not much wind to speak of this morning and the air was 63.9º and the water was 68.0º at the buoy.  It's a "Blue Moon" driven high tide at 9:55am +4.9' this morning and low tide is at 3:14pm +1.3'.  We have a SW swell out of 229º at 3.0' and again Sapphire was one of the few places with any waves in the South Bay.  Keep your fingers crossed for mañana at the Hermosa Pier... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co... O ne of the two happiest days in a boat owner's life.  This happens to be the first one: when you buy the boat!  Mark Mitchler and Suzy just got this bitchen Catalina 320 (#1) and officially renamed it "Twisted Sheets".  We're wishing them many happy days sailing on the bounding main! A two session day today, being a legitimate summer's day.  Unlimited visibility under clear skies and light winds out of the west by 1 to 2kts.  The air temperature early was 61.9º and the water at the buoy is 65.8º.  High tide was at 9:24am +4.5' and low tide is at 2:25pm +1.8'.  We have a combo swell out of WNW 290º at 3.0' and it's enough to give a little 2' push and send our happy little group gliding along... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

32 Miles Monday Surf (Paddle) & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W hen's the last time you paddled 32 miles without stopping?  We figured that to get 32 miles under our belts we would have had to paddle 2.5miles every go out this month (12).  We were feeling pretty good about ourselves until math raised it's ugly head.  All props to Christian and Mark Cole who was also in the race!  What a spectacular feat and the familia is basking in the reflective light of their accomplishment!  Here's a snap #1) of Christian upon exiting the water and checking in... A beautiful summer's day, one of the few we've had.  Unlimited visibility under clear skies.  Winds were light onshore at 1 to 2kts and the sea surface was smooth enough.  The air temperature was 63.9º and the water at the buoy was 66.4º, but felt more like 70 in the surf.  High tide was at 8:54am +4.2' and low tide follows at 1:35pm +2.3'.  It's a combo west swell out of 260º at 2.6' and it was 2' and slow at Sapphy for everyone who need

As The Wheels Turn Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... #1)  I f you haven't joined recently, maybe you want to consider meeting the crew for dinner on Monday evenings at 6pm at Capt. Kidd's Seafood Carousel.  The service is slow, the food mediocre, but the company is absolutely fabulous.  It has also come to our attention that on many nights there are not enough revelers to drink all of the wine that gets uncorked.  A new wrinkle in the Monday evening tradition has been the use of electric bikes to ride to the Captain's table.  Here we have Sancho and LoLa showing off their rides waiting for their e-biker buddies...  Don't drive angry Sancho... 3 miles visibility and it was a damp drizzle that slicked up the playing field.  Winds were persistent on-shore and the sea surface was chopped.  The air temp was 61.9º and the water is 66.7º and if the sun doesn't come out for longer than a couple of hours, it may not get much better.  There's one tide today, a high at 3:19pm +5.0'.  We have a swel

Waiting On Waves Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S till waiting on waves!  But it was a beautiful day with 20+miles visibility and not a cloud in the sky at checkout.  No wind early to speak of and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 62.9º at 6:15am and the water is 66.4º at the buoy.  Low tide was at 6:53am +2.3' and high tide will be at 2:10pm +4.9'.  We have a SSW swell out of 199º at 2.6' and it was almost breaking at Annaland!  If Hermosa's not breaking mañana, we might give Longfellow a look.  It appeared there might be some bumps there... N o, it's not the senior prom, although the Professor is certainly a senior!  Anna and Morgan's film "To Be Frank" was shown at the Chinese Theater for the 19th Annual Oscar Qualifying "Holly Shorts" Film Festival.  They didn't get an invite to the Oscar's, but they got to walk the red carpet and appeared to be the only ones to do it in flip-flops.  Also the Professor challenged George Hamilton to a end

Tiny Surf Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T he surf is sooo tiny that we included a tiny Jetski and a tiny Christiano to make it look bigger...  Not really working that well, huh... O ne thing we really noticed was how clean everything was after the rain!  Things were a bit dusty and those steady showers did a great job of cleaning things up... T omorrow is the first day of class for the Redondo Surf Team!  Class is 6:45am to 7:45am on Monday's. On Wednesday's and Friday's it's 6:45am to 8:30am so the pier will be busy those mornings.  As always you can jump in be

Warp Speed Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... C ompelled to do our civic duty.  We snapped a pic (#1) of the new pier railing that after a couple of weeks is already beginning to warp!  We corralled a Public Works employee and he suggested we contact "Go Hermosa" and voice our concern.  We shall do that and let you know how that works out.  After cutting through some of the old wood, we're here to tell you, it still had a lot of useful life... A fter a night of lightning and thunder and spitting-almost-rain we awoke to onshore winds (5 to 10kts) and chopped up seas.  The air was 65.5° and the water is 68.5°.  High tide was at 10:49am +4.2' and low tide isn't that low at 3:50pm +2.0'.  On a new moon we have a SSW swell out of 202° at 3.0' and it's 2' and breaking right on the sand... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Minimum Wave Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A s we've said numerous times in the past, "...when the party's over and you have more Hawaiian shirts than when you started, it was a classic party."  This soiree was in honor of another trip around the sun for the ever popular Morgan "Jah-Morgan" Sliff.  Shown with the irrepressible S.J. Bacallao, a grand time was had by all... C loudy, overcast this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were moderate out of the west, 3 to 5kts and the sea surface sported a bit of texture.  The air temperature was 65.3° and the water is 71.2°.  High tide was at 10:04am +4.1' and low tide will be at 2:48pm +2.4'.  We have a SSW swell out of 200° at 3.0' and that translated into a merciless shorebreak...  Hoping for some waves this week... W e have three new additions to the Surf & Culture Report.  Ryan Hall who's going to be a junior at UC San Diego and is the son of Pat "Larry" Hall of "Two-Larry's" fame.

Abalone Aw-Baloney Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T here wasn't a report yesterday because there was nothing to report about.  We were still high from our trip to the Cabrillo Marine Museum.  One of the most exciting things we saw was their labs for the propagation of abalones.  So take a look at this black ab compared to the size of LoLa's hand.  A good sized specimen.  So how old do you think this bad boy is?  Answer at the end. C loudy today with some actual raindrops falling in Round Town.  Air 68.0° water 70.0°.  High tide was at 7:49am +3.4' and low tide follows at 11:25am +2.9'.  There's a phantom SSW swell out of 200° at 2.6' and it's O' to 1'☹️... A nswer:  It's as old as Doc and the Professor - 73+ years old!  Makes you want to take abalone off the list of your faves!  If you could find it in the first place... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Cabrillo Beach Marine Museum Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A special day for the kiddos with a visit to the Cabrillo Beach Marine Museum with our amazing guide José Bacallao.  The adults and the kids alike learned some amazing facts about the plants and animals in our local waters!  A must see place to visit when you get the chance... U nlimited visibility under clear skies with offshore winds and a smooth sea surface.  The air was 65.6° and the water is 71.2°.  Low tide was at 8:00am +1.4' and high tide is at 2:48pm +5.3'.  We had a SSW swell out of 210° at 3.0' and it was a solid 2' and Sapphire was the call.  Aubrie was on fire! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Y ou can see the stacks in the photo below... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Don't Drink The Water Wednesday

Image
Lost Boys & Co... So it's sunny, 10 miles visibility, but the winds are out of the west by 5 to 8kts and the sea surface is lumped.  The air is 61.9° and the water is 70.5°.  Coming off the am low, it was high tide at 11:08am +4.5' and low again at 4:08pm +1.7'.  It was a west swell out of 262° at 4.3' and it was 3' to 5' and Aaron was ripping it up!   The call for mañana is 6:30am, let's hope there's no wind! #1.  This is what happens when Sancho let's the new guy run the scrubbers...  Not pretty... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

NOT On Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A few "NOTS" today: Visibility was NOT great. Winds were NOT offshore.  Onshore light. The surf in Hermosa was NOT breaking.  There was a SSW swell out of 192° at 3', but it was too weak to beat the tide. There was a high tide at 10:33am +4.3' and it was low at 2:25pm +2.2'.  It was a pleasant 68.0° in the air and 70.5° in the water. #1.  Here we have T.J. Maggio and the Professor at T.J.'s mother's memorial service.  She was an original Manhattan Beach surf mom and had four wacky boys who must have tried her patience.  T.J. was an original Lost Boy and figured prominently on the first trip to Saladitas in '89.  He drove, was our interpreter and found all the key spots.  He's retiring soon and says we might see him in Hermosa! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!
