Should'a Been Here Yesterday Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I t was good this morning (#1), but it was REALLY good yesterday.  Cloudless today with light NE offshore winds.  The sea surface was smooth, verging on glassy.  The air was a chilly 49.1º, but warmed up quickly and the water is 56.3º.  Low tide was at 6:00am -0.5' and high tide will be at 12:10pm +4.1'.  We have a SSW swell out of 204º at 2.6' and it was a solid 3' with some bigger sets... A good time was had by all at Chris and Pam Sellar's house with Steve and Christine Jones making a stop on their way home in Palm Springs.  From L to  R:  Chris, Pam, LoLa, Clyde the Glide (lurking in the background), Teresa, Donna, Christine and Steve.  Good to see everyone in good health and fine spirits!  Steve and Christine were original Topaz groms... Board Meeting Of The Minds Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... F irst morning back for the RUHS Surf Team Seniors and out in the water were Coach Avery and Slade Brown (#1).  They were treated to a magnificent moonset and some sweet 3' peelers that turned into some bigger mounds...  Like 10 miles visibility under cloudless skies and no wind to speak of.  The sea surface was smooth..The air remains a chilly 48.7º in the morning and the water is 54.9º and not helping warm things up.  High tide was at 10:23am +5.3' and low tide will be at 4:27pm -0.1', as the tides flip tomorrow.  We have a 3.0' swell out of SSW 219º and it started out smaller and lined up and got peakier and a little fatter with the tide... #2)  W hatever you do, don't be unavailable when Jah Morgan decides to FaceTime you... S 'posed to be a little bigger mañana, so even though it's a bit chilly you might try to make it down... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

How Many Sociopaths Do You Know Friday Surf & Culture Report?

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W e guess the entire subject line was a question.  But it is Friday and it is a Surf & Culture Report, so we'll head out from there... S o in photo the first, we have a good view of the playing field.  Large by Hermosa standards and high tide 8:12am +5.6'.  Also crowded for a Friday.  Winds were offshore at game time by 6kts and the sea surface was rolling and a bit mushed out.  The north side (#2) also seemed to have some good peaks, but everyone seemed to be entranced by the south side.  The water is still chilly at 54.0º at the buoy and 47.9º in the air.  We have a SSW swell out of 200º at 4.3' and it was easy 4' to head high and maybe a bit more on the second reef Hermosa.  #3) S hows Scott and Scotty splitting a really fat peak that took out most of the pack except for the eagle-eyed three guys on the outside.  It was like that all morning and by the time the tide had dropped enough to make it better, the wind came up.  You can tell Scott

A Lumpy Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A nd it was lumpy out there this morning as evidenced by photo #1.  It was cloudy with a weak sun peaking through on occasion and winds started out offshore before turning on.  The air temp at checkout was 49.3º  and the water is a chilly 54.1º.  High tide was at 7:29am +5.3' and low tide followed at 2:25pm -0.7'.  The swell is out of the WSW 255º at 3.9' and it was 3' to 5' and incredibly mushy as you can see in #'s 2 and 3.  Scotty and Jeff the Pilot were bobbing around and you had to be in the right place at the right time to score one of these mushburgers...  But Scotty did get a couple as we watched him paddle his ass off...  Nice guy, now he doesn't have an ass... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Plunk Your Magic Twanger Tuesday Surf & Culture Report (Froggy Gremlin)

Lost Boys & Co... H ere it is (#1) the El Russo, Bullet Model by José Barahona and inspired by Jetski himself...  Although the dimensions are secret, he might share them with you over a burrito...  When someone remarked that the glass job looked like a thin candy shell, Jetski (#2)wasted no time in giving it a nibble... W hat do you mean how do we know that Doc ? was here? (#3)  By the time we caught up with him the wind was picking up from about 3kts from the north to almost 20kts from the west.  The sea surface was rough, but the skies are blue and the air was chilly at 51.0º.  The water at the buoy has been 54.3º and we're hoping when the wind stops it might take a turn toward the 60's.  It was high tide this morning at 5:45am +4.5', so that Aaron (#4) didn't have to walk so far to the pounding surf.  It was low at 1:21pm -0.1'.  We have a west swell out of 255º at 5.2' and it was 5' to 7' with some bigger outsides. Y ou can tell the surf wasn'

Lost Boys & Co... W hat's Uncle Miloe (#1) so worked up about?  Probably because it's Jetski's 5th Surfaversary!  Yeah, that's it!  So a special commemorative edition of the Camo Board was shaped by the master himself (#2) El Ché and was suitably inscribed (#3) and presented to El Russo at a special dinner in his honor... A nd to top the whole thing off, he rode it this morning with Tarsan, Doc ?, Capitán Don Congrejo and the Professor to make it real and official!  The sky was basically cloudless and visibility was 10+ miles.  Winds were moderate offshore by 5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 47.3º and the water is 54.0º and you're probably getting tired of hearing us complain about the cold, but the fun factor is exponentially decreased by the drop in temperature.  High tide was early at 4:23am +4.2' and low tide will be at 12:41pm +0.3'.  Looking for a week of minus tides in the pm.  We have a west swell out of 266º at 4.6'

The Vernal Equinox Is Sometimes On Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H aving missed a couple of Surf & Culture Reports we thought we'd send out a Saturday Edition, plus it's the Vernal Equinox.  The sun crossed the line (imaginary) at 2:37am this morning PDT.  This marks the time when the sun crossed the celestial equator (also an imaginary line).  It rose at 6:56am at 89º E and will set tonight at 7:05pm 271º W.  If you're looking for the date when day and night were most equal, you'd have to go back to the 16th of March...  We dropped the ball on that one... S ome good surf this week!  Just look at Wednesday (#1), it was offshore and breaking way the hell out there.  It wasn't that big, but as the tide turned it got really good.  It was windy this morning and blowing from 7 to 10kts onshore, but yesterday (from top to bottom) Kelly, Kira, the Professor and Bacallao got some long rides from second reef Hermosa Bubbles to the tower at 10th!  But even with the wind this morning Dane Boy (#3) got some verts an

Sub-Commandanté, Bacallao (#2) surveying the playing field this morning from the Pier at Hermosa (the) Beach.  +20 miles visibility under cloudless skies.  Yesterday's winds did a 180 and it was from the NE this morning at 5.2kts.  A rolling sea surface and chilly water at 55.9º for this season's low temperature.  The air was also brisk at 47.9º.  High tide is at 11:41am +4.0' and low tide will be at 5:32pm +1.0'.  Currently we have an 8' to 10' surf running and some of the outsides are double-overhead.  To give you some perspective photo #3 shows three trusty warriors making their way out through the relentless lines of surf.  There's about 50 yards between each of them, maybe more and not many breaks in the action.  The best appr

Marching In On The Ides Of March Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O f course "It's always HERMOSA in Hermosa." (#1)  But this morning it was raining and we made it inside Martha's for our first dine-in experience in a year (#2)!  Better than delicious, the steak and eggs were perfect!  The rain cleared and now the wind is coming in Like a dagger in Caesar's back.  The air temperature was 51.9º and the water is stuck at 57.7º, but this wind might drive that down a bit.  High tide is at 11:07am +4.6' and low tide is at 5:12pm +0.6'.  We have a west swell out of 270º and the surf is 2' and will be blasting to 4' to 6' by the time the wind has it's way... #3) E xperimenting with depth-of-field...  Nice window shot... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

It Was A Pretty Fun Friday And NOW It's Saturday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T hey had to remove Boomfwappa's foot to put in all these metal fittings (#1).  In the old days he would have had a peg... #2)  C louds across the bay courtesy of Julia Burke... S ome good ones Friday morning!  Doc ? and the Professor had their passports stamped and they went to the north side, while Aaron (#3), Duncan and Zach (#4) scored a couple on the south side.  It was distantly cloudy and 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface was smooth with that easy west swell roll.  This morning the air temp was 44.3º and the water is holding at 57.0º.  High tide was at 8:58am +5.4' and low tide follows at 3:26pm -0.3'.  It was 4' to 6' and some of the outsides were pretty fat.  We went back to the south side and the office and it was a bit crowded, but we still got our share! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

We Say The Beachboys Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... "W hen the clouds parted we heard this celestial singing, like angels, but it could have been the Beachboys..." O n the other hand, how would like to be the person whom these women (#1) asked to take the photo? "Yes, wait...  but the light is behind you...  On second thought, it's okay like this..." T he surf was pumping this morning (#2) and there were a few stouthearted chargers who said, "Fie" to the runoff, rain, virus and bacterium.  Partly cloudy with an occasional rain squall and offshore winds for most of the morning.  The air temp was 46.9º and the water is 57.0º.  High tide was at 7:46am +5.8' and low tide follows at 2:33pm with a draining -0.9'.  Despite the high tide, there were some tubes and this guy (#3) got covered up before he finished this left... N otice:  Jimmy Utah is back in town!  (seal bark!) A nd this morning on the way back from checking it, the "Wiggly Bus" or "Scooter Boy" hi

A Change In The Weather Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he high tide coupled with the swell set up some nice peaks (#1) if you were in the mood to challenge the runoff and the wind, which came up fairly early.  The NDBC 46221 buoy is on the fritz (as well as parts of the system), so we're taking a flyer on some of the data, but we do know that it was 48.4º in the air this morning and the water is 57.0º.  High tide was at 7:04am +5.7' and low tide will be at 2:00pm -1.0'.  It's predominantly a west swell in the 5' to7'+ range and Dave Carter (#4) got some nice ones before reporting for duty... #2)  H ere we have LoLa and Capitán Donaldo Congrejo discussing travel plans for the upcoming season.  It seems that many places (that have surf) are opening up as the citizenry gets vaccinated... #3)   O n the banks of Lago Hermosa, as Weegs decides whether to open up the berm and let the questionable water flow or cover the entire mess and pretend it never happened... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we

A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... D espite the buoy telling us the swell size is in the 2' range, it was looking 5' to 7' (#1) and there were some sizeable outsides.  Not longboard friendly!  It was calm early, but it took no time at all for the wind to switch around and by 10am it was 7 to 10kts from the west and the sea surface got bumpier as the day wore on, until it was whitecaps and spray as far as you could see.  The air was 48.3º and the water is 58.6º, as if you didn't like the 14.3 Celsius version.  High tide was at 6:16am +5.5' and low tide was at 1:25pm -1.0'.  A SW swell out of 276º, probably building with the wind, but rain in the forecast for late this evening and early mañana... W eather conditions?  Forecasts?  Prior year's experience?  Nope, the berm goes down on the second week of March (#2) and there you have it.  Case closed!  The kids will now be putting away their sleds for next year...  The good news is that you'll now be able to see more of t

No, We Can't Draw An Octopus Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... " O f course we can draw an octopus!" said the Professor when asked to adorn the bow of the recently repaired boat belonging to Chris "Sancho" Urchita.  But when push came to shove or brush came to hull, it turns out the Professor couldn't draw an octopus worth a damn.  So back to the drawing board (or table in this case) (#1) and some careful study of the creature in question... I f you caught it early this morning you were fine, but if you waited too long, the jig was up.  The offshore winds turned at 9am and immediately started to blow at 7 to 10kts and the sea became a rather bumpy mess.  If you were like Doc ?, Christiano and the Professor, you were right in the middle of it.  The air was 55.5º and the water is 57.7º and fortunately it was sunny!  High tide was at 5:16am +5.3' and low tide will be at 12:41pm -0.8' for a week of pm minus tides.  We have a bumpy WSW swell out of 257º at 3.6' and that translated to 4' to 5
