Lost Boys & Co... P atrick Malloy's tonight for happy hour.  Come say howdy to Patrick himself! M anny LaGod is one of the famous Ali'is that backed Don Ho.  One night Duke Kahanamoku strolled in and gave Manny this engraved Zippo cigarette lighter.  He's got stories from here to Guam!  He's promised to send us a few pics from that era and we'll fo' shore post dem... C loudy this morning and we discovered that you have to walk all the way on the pier to the berm before you can see the surf.  That's gotta be another 25 or thirty feet farther than our typical spot!  Outrageous!  10 miles visibility and it's supposed to sprinkle tomorrow.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temp was 56.5 and the water is 64.8.  High tide was at 7:31am +6.0' and low tide will follow at 2:13pm +-0.0'.  We have a SSW swell out of 202º at 2.0'.  That translates to 1' and poor and it's not looking promising for at least a couple of days... T omorrow morning will be Redondo High's first dual competition against Peninsula.  Action starts at 6:30

A Bar In Havana Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T his is the bar in Havana where we got the free drink for showing the barkeep how to make a proper martini🍸.  If we had noticed what great legs he had we might have complemented him...  Wait...  No, we would have kept that to ourselves... H azy sun on this fall morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 2.1kts and glassy conditions.  The air temperature was 56.9 and the water is 65.7.  High tide was at 7:03am +5.9' and low tide is at 1:37pm +0.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 193º at 3.0' and it was 2' to 3' and okay to fun... Twice The Moustache Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T here are probably a lot of reasons to go see "Murder on the Orient Express" but as far as we're concerned it was worth the price of admission just to see Hercule Poirot's mustaches (#'s 1 & 2.)  Amazing!  Fabulous!  Bitchin'!  He even had a facial mask to protect them while he slept!  We strained to see if they were pasted on during the close-ups, but for all it's worth they look like Branagh grew them for the part...  Okay, we should'a paid better attention - we're not even sure who the murderer was... A beautiful fall morning here in LaLa Land!  10 miles visibility and only a few laggardly clouds.  The air was a chilly 51.5 and the water was comparatively warm at 64.8.  High tide was at 6:34am +5.7' and low tide will be at 12:58pm +0.7'.  We have a 2.6' SSW swell out of 200º true.  It was 2' to 3' and some pretty fun little growlers.  Capitan Donaldo, Morgan and the Professor we're catching s

Berm Baby Berm Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... L ike clockwork, the berm goes up on the second Monday of November.  This is because kids in Southern California need something to slide down like those kids in Michigan in the snow.  It also lets you jump over the railing on the pier and only fall a couple of feet.  It looks great if you edit it right... P artly cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility this morning.  Winds wee offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 53.8 and the water is 63.7 thanks to that recent upwelling.  High tide is at 6:00am 5.4' and low tide will be at 12:13pm +1.2'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 3.3' and it was a fun 3' with some nice peaks, best at the higher tide... Y ou know Jane the Mermaid?  She made these cookies for the crew.  They were delicious.  What did you expect them to look like...  She's a flamin' mermaid! F inally, YES!  We got the bus back.  This proves that when something goes wrong with your ride, all you hav

Watch That Follow Through Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o, the sharks freaked us out a bit when considering the Galapagos but then we saw the rays (#1)...  All of these normally solitary animals have somehow decided that the Galapagos are the place to go and meet up with their relatives!  Aren't there any warm fuzzy animals out there? P artly cloudy this morning with 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 56.3 and the water is 65.7 at the buoy.  Low tide was at 8:29am +2.9' (which is high for a low tide) and high tide will follow at 2:08pm +4.9' (which isn't that high for a high tide.)  We have a west swell out of 260º at 4.9' and it was 3' to 4' with some good waves if you were patient.  Jah Morgan was patient and we watched her get an honest barrel on a nice little dredger right off 615...  Classic... W hen you've honed your stalking technique, you can get right up to folks without them noticing.  Here (#2) the Professor finally make

Let It Roll Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S he's just shown here hovering (#1), but when she sits down and takes off it's very impressive.  Maybe 40 or 50mph at top speed.  Have no idea how she controls the thing...  We want one, but she won't sell...  What does Iran want with nukes when it's got these babies...?? B eautiful day this (#2).  Winds were initially offshore by about 1.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 54.9 and the water at the buoy is 64.9.  Down +3º from yesterday, probably a bit of upwelling with the incoming swell.  Low tide was at 6:40am +2.9' and high tide follows at 12:41pm +5.3'.  It started out as a west swell at 1.6' and by 3pm it was 3.3' out of 271º.  Should be some waves mañana, if the wind doesn't mess it up! H eaded up to the Cove (#3) later in the morning and it was beautiful in it's own Palos Verdes-overbuilt-fake-facade-go ride your pony because you like jodhpurs just as flat as the rest of the Bay sort of way

Baby On Board Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... P utting the "board" in Baby-on-Board... A beautiful morning, we had a few scattered clouds and 20+miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore by 1.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 54.9 and the water is 67.3, but registered 69 at the Hermosa Pier.  Pretty toasty for November.  Low tide was at 5:18am +2.6' and high tide will be at 11:31am +5.8'.  We have a WSW swell out of 243º at 1.6' and it was almost that on the beach.  Actually, we watched the RUHS team snag a few zippers and it inspired us to take a paddle.  Especially standing out this morning was Ben Oien, who got three turns on a little dredger and wrapped a 270 at the end of the ride!  Pretty great in such small surf... O ur friend and compatriot Hugo Vau on a macker at Nazaré (#2).  One of the most humble, real people we have ever met he obviously has nerves of steel and ice water in his veins.  An amazing wave and an equally amazing person... A Samhain Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S neaked up on us this year, but yes indeed, it's "Samhain" or mid-fall.  Kinda feels like mid-fall.  Actually, our favorite is "Lughnasad" which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue very melodically, but is mid-summer.  We could have helped Shakespeare with a "Lughnasad Night's Dream." S o, we're checking out the Galapagos and they're famous for exotic flora and fauna.  They also advertise some diving excursions.  (#1) is a shot of one of their famous dive spots.  Okay, we don't know about you, but we couldn't hold our collective breaths long enough to let all of those hammerheads pass by.  Hey we thought sharks were solitary predators!  Then we found this:  "This family of sharks (hammerheads) has an unusual behavior by forming groups or "schools" of up to 500 members. Few species of sharks do this. Each group has a social structure that determines hierarchical dominance according

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have Dorothy from the Kansas Wavepool enjoying some of the stratospheric spectral displays we had this weekend with the rain!  #2 was from LoLa on the bikepath on the Avenues.  #3 was a screen-grab from Jetski on the South Hermosa Cam and #4 was actually this morning when a little front passed through and the Professor noticed this hot dog of a rainbow bouncing along... M eanwhile, things have mostly cleared up and we have 20 miles visibility with some clouds.  Winds were offshore by 3.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 57.8 and the water is 66.7.  The high tide was at 9:49am +6.6' and low tide will be at 4:57pm -0.7' for your clam digging pleasure.  We have a SSW swell out of 215º at 2.6' and it was 1' to 2' with some little spitters running down the beach.  Despite the small surf it was fun... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Another Photogenic Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T his morning all you have to know about art is Botticelli's "Birth of Venus."  She's not really Venus, she's Jah Morgan and she just plays Venus when she's surfing (#1)...  By-the-by, she's on day 856 straight... T he sunlight on the water this morning (#2) was just fantastic.  Considering the sun was just coming up and all the angles involved, we weren't quit sure how all the rays were being focused like they were...  Was it a sign?  Probably.  Do we know what it meant?  Not so much... F abulous conditions this morning with offshore winds at 4.5kts and glassy sea surface.  Great visibility and "Toy Story" clouds.  The air was 58.0 and the water is 67.5.  High tide was at 8:56am +6.4' and low tide will follow at 3:33pm -0.4'.  We have a WSW swell out of 254º at 1.6' and it was about half of that on the beach... T he Tin Man and Jah Average Joe having a moment out in the water (#3).  We didn't realize t

Lost Boys & Co... T he use of telecommunications is invaluable when stalking a suspect (#1).  Also disguise can be crucial, here we have the Professor shadowing Jetski disguised as a bandy-legged old man... R ainy skies this morning with unusually clear visibility.  Even though it's cloudy and overcast, Catalina is clear as a bell.  We'll call it 20 miles visibility with a low ceiling.  Winds are brisk out of the SSW by 5 to 10kts and the sea surface has a definite short chop.  The air temp is 58.3 and the water is 67.3.  High tide is at 8:25am +6.0' and low tide follows at 2:58pm +0.1'.  We have a WSW swell out of 245º at 2.3' and the surf is a poor 1' to almost 2'...  There's a swell out of the NW on it's way and with any luck, we might get a taste of that tomorrow... E l Santo (#2) bonking the photographer on the head with his patented "surf and turf" move.  He clobbers you with his surfboard and you fall to the turf... D rone phot

Lost Boys & Co... W hen a family of Vikings asks you to help them with their shields, you say "YES!"  Shannon, Charlie & Mike... C loudy this morning looking like it might rain, but still 10 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was glassy.  The air temperature was 62.7 and the water is 66.7.  High tide is at 7:57am +5.6' and low tide will be at 2:14pm +0.7'.  We have a WSW swell out of 240º at 2.3' and it was a poor 1' to 2'.  The buoys are beginning to pick up along the northern coast, so we're hoping that might be a good sign... T his (#2) is what happens when the photographer says, "Look fierce!"  Not one fierce look registered, as near as we could tell... (#3)   The Tin Man was still on the beach this morning rusted in place.  He spent the entire night putting the "fun" in funnel... E l Santo and Dorothy mugging for the camera (#4).  Since Dorothy has been taking boxing lessons with J.P. she and El Sa
