Fort Knox Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... P hoto #1 is of a large portrait of the "Supreme Leader" that hangs in the Museum of the Revolution.  It's titled "The Triumph of the Prophecy."  The funny thing is, that it doesn't look like he's particularly happy with how things worked out.  We were a bit surprised that it was the first thing you see when you walk into the lobby of the museum.  Looking at it in a positive light you could say that he's shouldered the responsibility for the revolution.  No so good light and maybe he's saying, "Maybe it didn't turn out so great..." A Basq Kitchen tonight at 5:30 for those eager and ready to start the weekend.  It's north of Quality Seafood and south of Naja's on the International Boardwalk, Redondo Pier.  Different than the usual fare, but interesting and good... #2   These days you can invade the Bay of Pigs in a '75 Combi.  Instead of being repelled, they'll sell you a tall rum drink and som

Why Is It Thames And Not "Tems" Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I n the "Bahia de los Cochinos" the clarity and color of the water was fabulous.  Some of the best snorkeling we had ever experienced.  Someone had cut out this narrow entry way out to the reefs, but you could just jump in and see one of the most breath taking seascapes you can imagine.  The most impressive thing was that all of the coral was still alive!  It hasn't been poisoned by the runoff from factories, walked on by eager tourists or dynamited out of existence for a harbor.  We managed to sneak up on this mermaid sunning herself.   A brilliant day in the Southland today with 15 miles visibility under hazy skies.  Winds were calm to offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 54.9º and the water was trying at 64.4º.  Low tide was at 9:37am +2.6' and high tide will follow at 3:03pm +4.2'.  More than fun surf, with a 2.6' west 271º swell that bumped to 3' and some longboard friendly waves... Lost Boys & Co... W e have it on good authority that Happy Hour this Friday will be at "A Basq Kitchen" at the usual time of 5:30pm.  You can find it on the International Boardwalk somewhere between Naja's and Quality Seafood.  They have interesting selections for Happy Hour and it lasts until 7pm.  Should be a nice warm-up to Thanksgiving without those annoying family... S peaking of Happy Hour, this one in Havana Vieja was pretty deluxe.  Our host Jorgé converted his living room into a restaurant and the food was quite good.  Could've been a tad spicier, but they were on the right track.  At 8:55pm he lead us all up on the roof and we heard the "Cañonado" from across the harbor channel and the El Morro at 9pm "en punto."  By the time we were through with dinner Mike had purchased two boxes of Cohibas, duly recorded and notarized and we could barely move from the dessert.  We thought that in communist countries people ate millet and canned pea

Lost Boys & Co... O f course cigars are right up there with rum, sugar cane and revolutionaries as the chief exports of Cuba.  LoLa was making friends outside the Bodequita del Medio and had the opportunity to decline a free cigar, but opted for the photo op instead.  Notice the gentleman behind the girls smoking a bomber!  C lear skies and 20+ miles visibility with offshore winds at 3.9kts and smooth seas.  The air temperature is 47.9 but freezing degrees and the water is a relatively warm 62.6º.  Low tide was at 6:03am +3.1' and low tide will be at 12:03pm +4.8'.  We have a west swell out of 274º at 4.3' and it was at least that big at Hermosa and a tad smaller at some other spots...  Could be fun mañana! A t the Floradita Club in Habana Vieja.  They assert that they are the birthplace of the Daquiri, a somewhat specious claim, given the preponderance of the drink.  Daquiri is actually the name of a region in Cuba and possibly the name of an indigenous group of people

Lost Boys & Co...  S o, it was blowin' like a son of a gun this morning and one of the places that seemed to hold things together a bit was between the horseshoe pier in Redondo.  We show a nice peak and a right off the north side of the horseshoe.  Not clear exactly how illegal it is to ride there.  It used to be okay, then strictly forbidden and now the signs are down, but no one seems to be making the effort. W indswept vistas greeted the dawn and it was 20+ miles visibility in all directions.  Winds were hard out of the north up to 20kts and the sea surface was full whitecaps.  The air temperature was a wind assisted 53.3º and the water was 62.4º.  High tide was at 11:03am +5.2' and low tide will be at 6:44pm +0.5'.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 9.5' and it was a spectacular 8'-10'. C lark the Meth Hunter, Jetski and LoLa check things out from the Hermosa Pier.  Hangin' on to keep from being blown away... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'l

Lost Boys & Co... N o, this didn't make the album cover either, but we were on the cover of "Brewer's Yeast" the magazine for micro breweries.  We purchased a "yard" of their finest microbrew  and it was cold, flavorful and had a mellow finish.  Captain Donnie says we should have ordered the "obscura."  This place is the first micro-brewery in Cuba...  Speaking of the album cover, these girls were part of the audition for a maraca and timbale player.  Turns out they played on cuts 4,5 and 7.  Lots of comments on the maraca player.  Sorry, Mick Jagger... H appy Hour on Friday will be at the Mermaid and we understand that there will be Bikram Pool for those devotees.  Because it's getting dark so early, the wagon masters (LoLa & Jetski) have decided the gathering time will be 5:00pm instead of 5:30.  Someone suggested that those who work might have difficulty making the adjustment.  Understood.  Advice:  Leave early... O f course here in

Lost Boys & Co... U mm, nope this one didn't make the album cover either.  That's El Morro in the background, the fort that guards Havana Harbor.  In the old days they would drag a chain across the mouth of the harbor there so pirates couldn't sail into the bay and clog things up.  They still sound the canon at 9pm to let you know they haven't forgotten...   Tarzan, LoLa, Ché and Donnie.  The ukulele player took the pic... H ere in the South Bay the winds abated and we had some sweet, but cool offshores to contend with.  20miles visibility under clear skies.  Winds were offshore by 4.6kts and the sea surface was smooth to glassy at times.  The air temperature was 55.2º, driven down lower with the winds.  The sea temperature was 65.5º and felt relatively warm.  High tide was at 8:13am +6.0' and low tide followed at 3:07pm -0.1'.  The buoy was reporting a SSW swell out of 198º at 3.6' and it was a fat 3' to 4' with some looming outsides.  Some good

Lost Boys & Co... O ne word from Irie Pete and the berm appears.  When he gets tired of it's presence, he'll make the call and it will disappear.  For now all of the poor Hermosa children who can't afford to go to the snow like their Manhattan Beach counterparts, will find themselves sledding down the Hermosa Alps... 20+ M iles visibility as the wind blows away all of the detritus that inhibits your vista.  Those winds were steady at around 14kts and the sea surface was rife with whitecaps.  The air was a brisk 57.2º and the water is 65.8º.  High tide is at 7:48am +5.8' and low tide will be at 2:35pm +0.1.  We have a west swell out of 268º at 6.2' and it's 4' to 6' at most spots, but a little rough with all that bluster. A n excellent street corner take on the 50's vehicles that abound in Havana.  D own on the Bahia de los Cochinos (or better known as The Bay of Pigs) the Professor inspects this 1959 Bluebird (Pre-Grummon) school bus, converted i

Lost Boys & Co... F un to travel around and check out new and interesting places, but sometimes home deals up some great surprises.  Like this morning's sunrise.  Braedan, who was struggling with his wetsuit, turned around and went "Whoa!"  Yeah, whoa! P artly cloudy and an excellent morning for sunrises.  12 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 5.6kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 59.9º and the water was 66.4º.  High tide was at 7:24am +5.7' and low tide will be at 2:04pm +0.3'.  We have a west swell out of 272º at 3.0' and it was a high tide floated 2' to 3', with a few goodies, but you had to wait... I f you were following our Instagrams from the road, you know this pic didn't make the album cover.  LoLa, Tarzan, Cheli, Jorge (the maraca player) and Capt. Donnie.  Jorge owned the restaurant across from El Morro, where we went up to the roof to listen to the "canonado" at 9pm to close off Havana harbo

Lost Boys & Co... H appy hour will be at Samba tonight.  5:30pm on the patio. D riving around in old classic "Detroit Iron" isn't the only way to get around in Havana.  You can always grab one of these coconut transports and buzz around way faster than you think is healthy.  There are several advantages, such as:  They can fit down the narrow streets of Habana Vieja.  They are nimble enough to cut in and out of the traffic.  The drivers know all of the interesting short cuts.  At one point, Tarzan and the Professor jumped into a coconut and as the driver endeavored to stay up with coco filled with our comrades, he hiked us over on two wheels to negotiate a tricky 90º turn.  The Professor looked at Tarzan and said, "How's come the driver is wearing a helmet and we're not?" W e have a beautiful and not so freezing morning going on today.  20+ miles visibility and clear skies.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 59.3º and

Lost Boys & Co...   H owdy citizens, we're back and somehow, despite grabbing as much warm water and humid air as we possibly could, temps have still managed to plummet on land, sea and air.  An example of our attempt(s) is demonstrated in photo #1 as we come in low and hot over the Cuban archipelago...  Lots of warm, clear water and temps in the low 80's... B ut here, even though we have lots of visibility, 20+ miles, and clear skies, it's still 52.3º chilly degrees on land and 66.4º cool ones in the water.  To top things off, we have an offshore wind, with accompanying chill, at 5.6kts and smooth sea surface.  High tide was at 5:44am +4.8' and low tide will be at 11:47am +2.0'.  We have a west swell from 255º at 3.3' and it was 3' to 4', with some spectacular manes on the waves... G reetings!  We made it into Cuba with only minor difficulties, mostly stemming from the fact that Cheli apparently looks like a person of interest to the revolutionary g
