FUD Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... Ahhh... here we are in Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico.  The diving is deluxe, although we have seen only fragments of ruins on our dives and we're almost positive they were put there for our Norte pleasure.  It's blowing like a bandit this morning,   15 to 25kts out of the SE and the diving conditions are so bad, it's almost like home.  It's supposed to calm down tomorrow and we should get some water time.  We are eating too much dammit...  Had the best posole since Brother's! "When the surf breaks. we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co.. . I t's always a little sketchy when all those fish just keep swimming toward you and suddenly your in the middle of the school.  Holy mackerel!  How can the shark tell you from the fish?  Simple answer:  He can't! D ammit, it's cold out there this morning!  Overcast skies with 7 miles visibility.  Winds are persistent out of the south by 5.2kts and the sea surface was smooth at checkout time.  The air temperature is 56.3° and the water is 57.2°.  High tide is at 9:26am +4.4' and low tide will be at 2:51pm +0.9'.  The buoy is reading a SW swell out of 220° at 2.6'.  Because of the high tide we're calling it 1' to 2' and poor. Lost Boys & Co... P ink?  Green?  Paver seems to be in way over his head.  You know, you go to happy hour with this guy and he really wants to be happy... A dreary Monday with overcast skies and 5 miles visibility.  Winds started out offshore, by 1.9kts with glassy conditions, but that didn't last long and the hawk has already changed.  The air temperature was 54.9° and the water is 56.5°.  High tide is plugging everything up this morning at 8:35am +4.6' and low tide will be at 2:16pm +0.5'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a west swell out of 262° at 2.3' and we're calling the bumps 2' to 3' and breaking right on the shore.  If the wind doesn't go crazy it make work later on... O ur second photo asks you to find the hidden halibut.  Since it appears Paver was on his own fishing expedition, it's your turn... Lost Boys & Co... L adies and gentlemen, may we present some of the finest individuals to ever wear the LA County Lifeguard colors!  From L to R:  Bob Souther, TC (Ted Claire,) Donny Souther, (3 unidentified,) Alan Walti and Ross McInnon.  Between the five of these seahorses, there are probably 10,000 saves.  Five of the reasons why LA county has some of the safest beaches anywhere!  We caught them on Monday night at Louey-Louey's enjoying the happy hour. A beautiful day in the southland, with 25 miles visibility, under clear royal blue skies.  Winds were offshore this morning by 5.5kts and the sea surface was smooth, almost glassed off.  The air was a cool 48.4° and the water was a chilly 55.8°.  Where's all this global warming?  Geez, don't waste it on some volcano in Iceland for cryin' out loud... Heat up our water!  High tide is at 5:32am +4.5' and low tide will follow at 12:17pm -0.1'.  The 46221 buoy is reading a WSW swell out of 256° at 3.9'.

Lost Boys & Co... N o rain this morning and mostly sunny skies for the morning session.  20 miles visibility and it's clouding up as the afternoon approaches.  Winds were offshore by 6.3kts and the sea surface was smooth with a pronounced roll.  The air temp was a chilly 47.3° and the water has dropped 6° since Tuesday to 54.3°.  All of that wind obviously had an effect on the upwelling of cooler water.  Low tide is at 11:27am -0.1' and high tide will follow at 6:22pm +4.1'.  The buoy is reading a WNW swell out of 286° at 7.2' and we're calling it 5' to 8'.  The tide was really having it's way with the surf.  As it dropped, things got rounder and more critical.  There were a lot of surfers trying for the late drop-in and getting pitched in the process. Lost Boys & Co... F rom Tandis Morgan: Thanks so much for the offer to but a bit about Tiem bikinis in your blog.  So far word of mouth has been our only real advertising method, so it'd be great to get the word out via other channels as well.  Do I need to be added to the list for your blog?  Or is it a website I can just visit?  And speaking of visiting websites... If you're interested in getting a suit for your daughter(s), you can order online at www.tiemsurf.com or get one from Fluid Ski and Surf on Artesia and Aviation.  I also added a couple photos both in the text and as attachments.  Use any or all of them!   Thanks again, and hopefully I'll see you around this summer when I get my freedom back... -Tandis (Our pleasure!  Maybe it's just because of all the guilt we've felt about enjoying all of those bikini tops flying off in the surf, that we've decided to give a shout out to a product that keeps them on...  Our first photo is of Tiem&

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou can appreciate how competition brings out the animal in some folks.  Here we have a shot of Birdie, sending his opponent from Brother's Burritos, crashing to the canvas.  Actually, it just looks that way.  The guy tripped and Birdie took advantage of that moment to pass the ball to a fleet footed José, seen running past.  Our second shot is of Corey (Becker) and Juan (Brother's) vying for the ball.  Corey was long on enthusiasm, while Juan is a veteran footballer.  Finally, we have a shot of Lance (Brother's) about to make a crucial save.  It ended up being a close game and depending on who you talked to - a tie...  (We'll have a few more shots tomorrow...  Ed.) C loudy and windy this morning with 15 miles visibility and winds out of the west by 7.8kts, gusting to almost twice that.  The sea surface is working it's way to a fine chop, with white caps are beginning to form as the front makes it's way in.  The air temperature is 56.7° a

Lost Boys & Co... T he South Bay Surf League held it's league finals on Saturday, April 17.  We snagged a few photos of the awards ceremony.  First, we have Karly Goins, Bishop Montgomery's top female surfer.  She surfed through three heats of fierce competition and placed sixth in the finals.  She was bummed, but we think it's pretty good after you surf against over 60 women during the course of the season and then make the finals in league!  Our second shot is of Dayton Silva, who finished first - in everything.  First in Bodyboard, first in Longboard and first in Shortboard.  In our recollection that's the first time that's happened in this league.  Watching him in the short board finals, it looked like he had jets attached to his board.  Everyone else looked like they were surfing in slo-mo.  Finally, the guy who makes the whole thing work, John Joseph.  JJ, selflessly throws himself into putting on these contests and doesn't get half the credit he dese

Halfway Finished Friday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e started yesterday off with a pic of Andrew and Jose discussing the approach to shaping the new blade.  Here we have the finished product (with a smiling José holding on,) ready for Birdie to do his magic.  But wait... Davey is going to do some rising sun imagery with the Barahona eagle coming out of the sun!  Let's see if we can get some shots of the artwork for next week... R ight on schedule the sun came bounding out on to the firmament at 6:26am.  20 miles visibility, under partly cloudy, mostly sunny, skies.  Winds were disappointing out of the west at 11.4kts and the sea surface had a heavy tack to chop first thing.  The air temp was 54.1° and the water has reached the spring milestone of 60.1°.  If it doesn't get any colder for the next seven months, we'll be way happy.  Low tide started out the morning at 5:15am -0.5' and high tide will follow at 11:36am +3.5'.  The buoy is reading a bumpy 3.3' swell out of 210° SSW and we'r

Lost Boys & Co... Y ou know how stoked you get when you arrive to get that custom blade shaped.  Here we have Andrew Staich and José, discussing some fine tuning on an older prototype.  We'll see if we can't get a shot of the shaped blank as it goes to Dave in airbrushing.  Andrew says he wants his equipment to be memorable...  Gotta like that! A beautiful spring morning with 12 miles visibility, under a hazy sun.  Winds were calm and the sea has a slight tack on a smooth background.  The air temp was 51.4° and the water is up another degree to 59.5°.  High tide is at 10:51am +3.8' and low tide will follow at 3:58pm +1.5'.  The buoy is reading a SW swell out of 225° at 3.0'.  The surf is right there at 3' and there were some good ones if you were patient and picky. H ere we have the remainder of the Redondo High Men's Volleyball Schedule.  Duncan Avery, Knob Hill local and Pineapple Paul's son-in-law is their coach and doing a rather good job!  Sup

Lost Boys & Co... T he sun comes up, the sun goes down, doesn't really matter in party town...  So this is either the sunrise or the sunset and like the chair at the first Continental Congress you have to decide which it is.  (Ben Franklin decided it was rising.)  Don't worry there are no wrong answers... C hilly this morning at checkout time, running 51.1° as we shuffled to the car.  Visibility was 15 miles with partly cloudy skies and the normal haze.  Winds were offshore by 5.3kts, but the sea surface persisted in being a bit tacked, from who knows what blow.  The water has continued to warm up adding another degree and turning 58.3° at sunrise.  High tide was at 10:10am +4.1' and low tide will be at 3:34pm +1.2'.  The buoy tells us that there is a SW swell out of 232° at 3.6'.  We're calling the resulting waves 3' to 5', poor to fair to almost good.  W e saw Kevin "Buffalo" Holmes out again today and he caught a couple of good ones on

Lost Boys & Co... T hat perfect wave is always where you find it... Hi Professor, It's amazing!  Two weeks ago I drove out to Death Valley and found the perfect wave!!  Took a big one on the head and ended up with some serious sand in serious places.  Other than that it was a good score. All the best, Poseur (Mike "Poseur" McKinney always comes through with some of the best images around!  We'll bet after that initial wipeout, he was surfing this beauty to the max.  Speaking of good photographers, Randy Ruby has been producing some great images this winter.  He has some especially good dolphin shots, as well as some fine surfing photos.  Almost all of his shots of from the avenues, so it's fun to see days you remember captured so cleverly.  Ed.)   M ostly sunny this morning with 15 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 7.8kts and the sea surface was smooth early, giving way to a light tack around 9:30 - 10am.  The air temperature was 51.3°

Lost Boys & Co... S o, we go to this party and we're expecting a lot of sketchy guys, mob types, old school guineas...  you know.  So, the first guy we run into is Murph.  And Murph is putting up a good front.  He's hanging tough, steely gaze, gold chain, same outfit he wore to the morning checkout.  Oh yeah, except for the lit cigarette behind his ear.  That's tres tough in our book... R ain intermittently this morning, with the sun breaking through when you least expect it.  Visibility is 15 to 20 miles, depending on the clouds.  Winds out of the WSW by 7.5kts and the sea surface is working a major tack, almost to chop.  The air temperature at checkout was 54.3° and the water is holding at 58.1° despite the influx of fresh water.  High tide is at 8:57am +4.4' and low tide will be at 2:46pm +0.7'.  The buoy is reading a west swell out of 260° at 5.9' and we're calling it 4' to 7'.  If the wind stops in time today, tomorrow could have some goo

L ost Boys & Co... J ust in case you're not appreciating the recent warm weather, here's a shot of McCall, Idaho last week.  That's a pine tree covered with freshly fallen snow... A little cloudy this morning with 20 miles visibility and a bit of haze.  Winds were erratic, but mostly out of the east by 3.9kts.  The sea surface was slightly rolled with a short bump between sets.  The air temp was 55.0° and the water was a refreshing 57.0°.  That was pointed up, when we tried to squeeze into our relatively new Billabong wetsuit and ripped a seam.  Oh, you've never heard of a Billabong wetsuit?  You didn't know they made them?  Well, they do and as near as we can tell, that might be the last one we purchase.  High tide was at 7:02am +4.3' and low tide will follow at 1:34pm +0.4'.  The buoy is reading a surprise 5.2' swell out of 261° W and we're calling it 4' to 6'.  Topaz and Sapphire were on pphire and there were some critical drops and

Lost Boys & Co... T hings you seldom read anywhere else:  "Yeah, you got me right in the thorax with that one!" T he sun came up this morning with the thinly disguised purpose of heating the shit out of Redondo Beach and it's neighboring bergs.  A good job too, because there were no icebergs when we hit the water this morning.  20 miles visibility and only a bit of marine haziness.  Winds were offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface was smooth, with a slight bump only visible to the studied eye.  The air temp was 57.0° and the water was 56.7°.  High tide was at 6:12am +4.2' and low tide will follow at 1:03pm +0.4'.  NDBC Station Buoy #46221 was reading a west swell out of 275° at 3.3'.  We ended up surfing Topaz and it was an inconsistent 3' with some bigger waves on the odd set.  Unfortunately, it looks like things are getting smaller before they'll get bigger.  The forecast is calling for increasing cloudiness over the next few days with rain in

Wallaroo Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A n wallaroo is a large reddish gray kangaroo found in the Port Jackson area of Australia.   Sometimes it's just impossible to not use a word like wallaroo.  That's all about that... A beautiful morning here in the Beach Cities.  25 miles visibility under sunny skies and 3.9kt winds out of the NE.  The sea surface has a short bump to it, which is a little odd, considering that it wasn't blowing that much yesterday.  The air temperature was 52.5° at checkout and the water was 56.5°.  We can't tell you how much we'd like it to warm up!  This cold water thing seems to go on forever...  High tide is at 5:04am +4.0' and low tide will be at 12:24pm +0.4'.  The buoy was reading a strong west swell out of 279° at 4.9' and we're calling it 3' to 5' and very crunchy.  Topaz and Sapphire were both breaking with considerable authority and any wipeout meant specific and general macro-derm abrasion therapy.  The water feels harder w
