March Leaves Like A Turkey Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... M arch came in like a lion and is now leaving like a turkey or maybe a manatee.  Not quite sure... W ho says all Portagee girls have mustaches?  There must be three or four of them in this pic that don't.  Then again one of them is four years old...  (L to R:  Taylor, Rebecca, Anna, Nathan, Jillian, Allison, the Professor, Lilly, Kristen, Kathy, Yoshi, Suzanne and Joey.  Photo Credit:  Azoreana Images) O vercast skies clearing early to hazy sun and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore in the am by 2.1kts and the sea surface was slightly bumped.  The air temperature was 57.3˚ and the water was 63.5˚.  High tide was at 7:52am +4.6' and low tide will be at 2:20pm +0.2'.  We have a south swell out of 190˚ that's pounding the south-facing beaches, but hitting us at 4.3' and looking 3' to 5' on the beach. Lost Boys & Co... O ne of the pleasures of giving folks surfing lessons is being part of that initial stoke that they show when they get those first waves.  Boris Vishnevsky, has lived in Hermosa Beach for 12 years and finally decided it was time to try surfing.  That in itself is a bit strange since he was a competitive swimmer in his prep days and a lot of those guys gravitate toward surfing pretty early.  We decided he should get the full experience, so we started by checking it out... H azy sun this morning and about 12 miles visibility.  Winds were calm to 3.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 66.3˚ and the water was 62.2˚.  Low tide was late at 11:22am +0.4' and high tide will follow at 6:28pm +3.5'.  We have a 3' SW swell that's not quite hitting us square at 220˚ and it's 2' to 3' and wally-crashy...  Supposed to be a NW combo on the way for tomorrow, so it will be here on Sunday... H ere is Boris, suited up and ready to go!  H

Cable's Out Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... N o report yesterday because the %$#@-ing cable was out.  Finally got the thing fixed and now everything is right with the world...  Just like at Brother's with Iv... wait that's not Ivan at the front!  That's OSCAR!  And who's at the grill?  Damn, it's Ivan!  Yoshi must be calling for reinforcements!  Anything could happen now... M eanwhile on the sand we have 20+ miles visibility and clear skies.  Winds were calm and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp was 64.3˚ ramping up to a pretty warm day and the water was 63.3˚.  Low tide was at 9:57am +0.4' and low tide will follow at 5:03pm +3.2'. We have a SW swell out of 225˚ at 3.0' and it's 3' with some fatter ones on the outside.  A beautiful day in and out of the water! L ast Saturday Redondo had a tag-team competition against all of the other teams in the So. Bay Surf League.  When all the dust cleared, it was Redondo second to Mira Costa by a measly 7 points!  Damn, I

Lost Boys & Co... W e always like to scoop the real blogs with cool art and products and this is no exception!  What we have here is both,  a one-of-a-kind sculptural piece that has been adapted to charge your cell phone(s.)  Executed by Steve "Birdie" Burdette and adapted by Ronnie Garcia, it suggests Jackson Pollack's flair for the random and thrilling use of color.  NOT cast, it is built from a tar paper substrate a drop at a time!  This process can take months and when the proper thickness is achieved Garcia uses his skilled eye to isolate each individual piece.  He must consider color, clarity, shape and size.  Obviously, each piece is unique.  They will be available for a limited time only at Brother's Burritos, 24 11th St. Hermosa Beach, CA.  ($375 and they will ship anywhere.) S ome good surf today!  Visibility was 20+miles and clear skies from the mountains to the sea.  Winds were off by 2.2kts and the sea surface was smooth. The air was a bit chilly at

Mournful Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... T hanks to all of the folks who responded with condolences to our announcement of Ken Norris' passing.  We include a little montage of some of the pics that Ken had prominently displayed in his home.  He often told us how much he liked the photo of Gen and him in the Tiki Bar and often mused that he could have been in the islands and no one would have known the difference!  In answer to a few questions, he spent his working career as a rep for Rolls-Royce jet engines.  Until a couple of years ago the airlines regularly called him to certify planes they were pulling out of mothballs.  He made it a practice of test flying everything he certified (something many reps won't do!)  He and Gen met in a walking class at Torrance Beach after his wife had passed.  They had no children and he was looking for some healthy activity.  They were together for fifteen years!  In the last few years he had suffered from advanced Chronic-Obstructive Pulmonary disorder and tha

Special Sunday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... I t is with profound sadness that we must convey the passing of Ken Norris, long-time companion of Grandma Genevieve, Saturday evening March 21st.    E ighty-nine years old, Ken was born in Brantford, Ontario, Canada and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII.  He worked for AVRO Aviation in Canada and did mapping and high altitude and cold weather testing on early jets.  His stories were the kind of thing that legends are made of and he often was at his post in the Tiki Bar reminding us of the kind of men that went before us. A true Lost Boy, he introduced the crew to the wisdom of the properly constructed rum & Coke® and remained a devotee until the very end.  He drove until the day before he passed and struck fear into the hearts of pedestrians, the constabulary and other drivers. T here will be a proper ceremony in about a month and we'll let you know when that will be taking place.  Until then, hoist a glass with an appropriate cocktail a

Lost Boys & Co... H ere we have a little high-tide, vernal equinox, more than half-way through the school year impromptu dance.  We feature Kris Hall, Emma Waldinger and Hali Honea... H azy sun this morning, giving way to a perfectly temperate day.  12 miles visibility, despite the marine humidity.  Winds were offshore by 3.3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temp at checkout was 58.5˚ and the water was 63.0˚.  High tide was at 9:09am +5.9' and it will drop about a foot an hour until low tide at 3:32pm -0.9'.  We have a nice strong SSW swell out of 206˚ at 3.3' and the surf is 3' to 4', with some nice strong sets.  If you had the magic ticket this morning, like Ché, you got some long roping lefts.  If you didn't have the magic ticket (like the rest of us,) you got to watch and hope you learned something... O ut in the garden it's feeling a bit springish as well.  These hibiscus were blooming just above the edge of the fence, prompting the Profe

Lost Boys & Co... S o the wind was howling out of the southeast this morning, holding up these little left peelers.  Wind speed was 7 to 10kts and the sea surface was a bit roughed up with the offshore.  Skies were cloudy almost looking like it could drip a bit and about 10 miles visibility.  The air and water were both 62.8˚.  High tide was at 8:21am +5.9' and low tide will follow at 2:54pm -0.9'.  We have a strong little SSW swell out of 209˚ at 3.0' and it's 3' to 4' and there are some good ones if you're patient. Magneton Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o it's been a bit steamy here the last week and it's almost a bit of relief ( almost ) when the sun dissolves into the broad Pacific, like it did in this photo on Sunday.  Of course as the Professor is fond of saying, "When you have a chance to lie in the sun, do it.  It'll get cloudy soon enough." B ut not today!  Go lie in that sun and get a base going for summer!  20+ miles visibility and the skies are mostly clear with a few high clouds.  Winds were offshore at checkout by 4.2kts out of the east.  The sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 67.9˚ (which doesn't seem outrageous, unless you consider it's still March! )  The ocean is 62.2˚ for it's own bit of toast.  High tide is at 6:37am +5.3' and low tide is a -0.5' at 1:37pm.  We have a WSW swell out of 250˚ at 2.6' and if you waited for the window to open, and you crawled in, and you were in the right place, you might have scored a few good ones... Another Friday The Thirteenth Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co.. S o maybe a little pick-me-up would be good for a Friday the Thirteenth?  How about a double-rainbow at sunset, Wednesday evening dropping right into Jim McGarry's pool?  Repeated dives discovered no gold.  Although Miss Lilly said she saw leprechaun feet disappear into the filter... W e've been in bed for the last two days so this is just the summary of the posted numbers, not our empirical observations.  Clear this morning (at least it was straight up).  The air temp was 66.3˚ and the water at the buoy was 61.0˚.  Low tide was at 9:51am +0.8' and high tide will be at 9:51pm +2.9'.  We have a 2.6' swell out of 245˚ SSW.  I f you thought double rainbows was cool, the sunset wasn't half bad either.   ♣ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Lost Boys & Co...   Check this out .  My step-uncle in Oregon  (Barbara's brother)  has been hand-crafting this board for me over the past 2 years.  He's making one for my Dad, too.  He doesn't surf, but loves working with wood and just decided to bust these out.  Can't wait to take delivery of this fine craftsmanship!  He ordered the frpames at the bottom, but then chose to source all the wood for the deck, base, and rails himself.  All of those parts were custom crafted.  He then found a glasser in the Portland area and had the finishing touches put on.  I see an Oregon road trip coming up (this baby isn't going to be shipped or flown)!   Aloha,   Paul  H ow'd you like to have one of these babies headed your way?  Then there's the real conundrum, do you hang it right away or do you take it out and risk dinging it or even just putting wax on it?  We'll report on how the Miloe's handle this dilemma... 40 years ago this would'a been a foggy

Neon Mermaid Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... L ike a bolt of lightning this neon mermaid just came outta the sky... H azy sun this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 3.7kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was 55.2˚ and it's supposed to warm up as we go through the week.  The water's steady at 60.6˚ and it was listed as 62˚ at the Hermosa Pier.  Low tide was early at 5:05am +0.9' and high tide will also be before noon at 10:59am +3.8'.  We have a SW swell out of 225˚ at 2.3' and it seemed a little bigger than that as Jimmy Thomas and Rasta Pete put on a show on the north side of the pier.  Some crystal clear waist high rollers on the rising tide... Y ou ever have that problem, that whenever someone takes your photo your eyes are closed?  Kelly Haraka, has solved that dilemma by closing her eyes on purpose!   This really takes a lot of the pressure off and you can be sure that you'll know what the results will look like...  Once you open your eyes, that is

Lost Boys & Co... G etting up early does have it's advantages.  Take for instance watching the moon set over the end of the Hermosa Pier.  Jimmy Utah initially thought there were three moons, kinda like Pluto, but with the rising sun two of them turned out to be lights on the pier.  Okay, maybe you can get up a little too early... A n absolutely stellar/lunar summer day with 20+ miles visibility and nary a cloud in the sky.  Winds were offshore at 4.3kts and the sea surface was glassy to smooth.  The air temp was 55.7˚ and the water was 60.4˚.  Speaking of water and air temps, we understand that it has been made official:  We are in an El Niño, albeit a weak-ish one.  High tide was at 9:16am +5.0' and low tide will follow at 3:36pm +0.2'.  We currently have a SSW swell out of 202˚ at 2.6' and that's just about the size of it...  That and it's breaking right on the sand... Lost Boys & Co... O ne of the differences between the HB's?  Huntington has snow and Hermosa doesn't...  They can have it... A nother brilliantly clear morning with 20+ miles visibility and clouds rimming the horizon.  Winds were off from the NE at 5.2kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was chilling at 48.3˚, but not even pretending to snow and the water was 61.5˚, but felt a tad cooler.  High tide was at 7:44am +5.3' and low tide will be at 2:25pm -0.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 198˚ and as that swings further north the waves should get better.  Right now it's 2.6' at the #46221 Buoy and it's about 2' on the beach with some fatter ones at the higher tides...  ♣ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it..."  The Professor!!

Monsoon Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S ome spectacular weather as of late.  Our first image shows a classic thunderhead rearing up between Catalina and Palos Verdes.  About a half an hour after we took the first pic, it had blown up to this rather ominous column of water vapor.  By 9am it was raining like crazy and by 11 it was sunny and bright again... F abulous visibility, 20 miles plus with those thunderheads and assorted clouds bumping around.  Rain, sun and partly cloudy with the winds blowing off shore at 5.2kts.  Some nice tack on the water.  The air temperature was 49.3˚ and the water is 60.4˚.  High tide is at 7:10am +5.3' and low tide will be at 1:59pm -0.3'.  We have a west swell out of 260˚ at 2.6' and it's 1' to 2' on the sand trying to skim over that high tide... B efore it started to rain, another cell was rotating to the north, aiming itself at Santa Monica.  Lots of lightning and thunder, but in the midst of all that sturm und drang, there was this rainbow col
