Floating Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have the most crowded spot in the South Bay, the Hermosa Beach Pier.  People were wondering aloud if and when they were going to close the pier.  Well, they didn't do that, mostly because it wasn't quite that big this morning. The lighting was dramatic and then we couldn't help but nudge the levels around until we got this kinda brooding atmospheric thing going.  H azy sun this morning and 9miles visibility.  The air was a chilly 52.0º, not helped by the haze and the water was 62.2º, but didn't seem as warm as yesterday.  High tide was at 9:53am +5.6' and low tide follows at 5:20pm -0.7'.  It's a west swell out of 260º at 7.2' and it was 6' to 10' with some pretty dramatic drops and spectacular rides.  Calling for rain mañana, but you know how that works in So. Cal...  We'll be checking... H ope you had a good year and observed all of last year's resolutions.  Now it's time to maybe come up with som

Festive Preparations Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... (We're not yelling, this computer won't let us justify the bold or italic of the text) So, here we are preparing for the holiday to come.  Maybe doing a little last minute shopping, munching on a bit of peppermint choco-bark or contemplating the real meaning of "merry"... But let us not forget the surf!  High tide at 5:23am +5.7' followed by a low at 12:33pm at +-0.0' (a tide that always makes us double check our sources).   A few clouds with offshore winds at 4 to 6kts.  The air temp is 60.8° and the water is 62.4°.  The sea surface is smooth and the visibility is 12 miles.  We have a west swell out of 271° at 3.9' and if you're at Sapphire (#1) this is what it looks like. Okay, Christmas is on Monday and we're going to take the day and dwell on our gift of family which happens to include you.  The diversions will be many so although we probably won't get to the report we will be thinking of you and what you mean to us an

Another St. Wenceslaus Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... Y eah, Good King Wenceslaus, or you might know him better as "Vaclav the Good."  And yes we know he really wasn't King but a prince or duke.  According to lore he was assassinated by his brother "Boleslaus the Cruel" (so far we're not making any of this up!). He was actually a day late for Christmas and we celebrate his feast day on December 26 (or the second day of Christmas.).   Maybe it's the air up here in Eagle, Idaho or the fact that we flew into Boise at 2am, but just before the wheels hit the ground our pilot decided it was too foggy to land!  We diverted to Salt Lake City and left after a restless night in the SLC airport.  Still lousy visibility here in Boise, but our pilot threw caution to the wind and his IFR and landed us perfectly on the runway and not the adjacent freeway, to the enthusiastic ovation of the faithful... M eanwhile the surf looks like there's possibilities at Sapphire if you're patient and have

Short days Long Nights Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... S o tomorrow we're looking at about 8hrs and 25 minutes of daylight.  Not to pressure you, but if you've got something you absolutely have to do during the daylight, best to get on it early!  On the other hand for our nocturnal friends (Jetski etc.) you'll be right in your wheelhouse. C loudy with intermittent rain this morning and 5 miles visibility.  Winds were primarily from the SE at 3 to 5kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air temperature at checkout was 60.0º and the water is 62.6º.  Low tide was at 10:26am +1.7' and high tide will be at 3:57pm +3.7'.  There's a west swell out of 263º at 4.3' steaming through the office.  Honestly, a little more sand and it could get some character back very quickly.  What are you asking Santa for this Christmas?  Like Steve O' said, a few sand bars would be nice! O ff to the frozen north!  See you on the 28th! ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Secret Santa Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... V ery secret, very Santa, very merry.  A good time was had by all at the 4th anniversary of the first secret event.  To top it off the surf was pumping and the assembled crew gathered on the pier to watch some overhead thrashers come through and wipe out the 3 unfortunate guys who managed to paddled out.  The backwash was spectacular and the drops were long and steep... C loudy and a few drops here and there.  14 miles visibility.  Winds were offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.3º and the water is 62.4º.  You are right around 98.6º.  Low tide was at 8:57am +2.4' and high tide is at 2:19pm +4.1'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 4.9' and it was jumping from 5' to 8' all along the beach... W e'll be heading up to Boise for the Winter Solstice and the attending Holidays.  Yeah gang it's Christmas!  We hope to send some quick snips, but we hope you have a great holiday and you have our permission to take

Late Night Sunday/Early Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o, you take a walk after a little get together at one of the local watering holes.  You think that walking out to the end of the pier will be a bit of a refresh and you won't have to worry about piloting your velocipede safely down the bikepath.  But those Hermosa civil servants take their jobs seriously!  Yep, right at 10pm they come down and close the pier for the evening.  Come on now!  Doesn't 10pm sound a tad early?  Of course if you're on the east side of the gates, no problem.  But if you're on the west side of the gates...  You get to be the first one to check out the surf in the morning! C razy morning this.  Visibility was 20 miles under cloudy rain threatening skies.  In fact a few drops fell at odd times during the day.  Winds were variable and depending on when you checked it could have been on, off or becalmed.  The water was 62.5º and the air was a preternaturally warm 53.2º.  Low tide was at 7:12am +2.8' and high tide was at 1

No One Told Us Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... A ll of the atmospheric conditions are absolutely perfect.  Skies are clear, winds are offshore by 2 to 4kts and the sea surface is smooth.  The air was winter-like 48.8º and the water is still holding at 62.6º.  High tide was really high at 9:06am +6.7' and low tide was really low at 4:41;pm -1.2'.  There were patches of dry sand inside the harbor.  We have a weak west swell out of 270º and it was almost 1' and looked like someone had left the pool cover on according to Jetski. F amilia!  Familia!  Familia!  You have no idea.  It's possible that we just solved your last minute Christmas gifting problems.  In a move as unorthodox as you are, we have created a SRUF Familia T-shirt.  If we were to say nothing else, the term "RING SPUN COTTON" should throw you back on your heels.  They have been painstakingly cut and assembled in our secret factory in El Salvador (thank you Oscar) and have been hand-printed using the highest quality camel oi

Queen of Denial Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e found ourselves continuously on the opposite side of the Nile from where we wanted to be next.  Which actually was fortuitous considering we got to be on the river every day.  You don't realize how closely the culture adheres to the river, considering that a few miles from the river it's the most inhospitable desert you've ever seen.  Not like the Mojave or the high desert where there are Joshua trees or cacti, there's not a blade of grass or even lichens to be found.  The river, of course, is charming and makes you want to spend you time on it's banks.  Here (#1) we have Sancho and LoLa heading over to the Luxor side of the river to do a bit of exploring... A bit of surprise this morning as some waves broke through the extremely high tide.  15 miles visibility and a few wispy clouds, not counting the smoke over the Marina.  Winds were offshore at 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 49.1º and the water is 63.1º.

As Far As Monuments Go Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... F rom the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre (c. 2575 - 2465 bce) and thought to depict his face on a lion's body.  It's carved from a single piece of the limestone bedrock and is 240 feet long and 66 feet high.  The Nile came right up to the feet of the statue in ancient times and there's a causeway that connects the Sphinx and the pyramid of Khafre (the second largest one).  Napoleon's soldiers did NOT shoot off his nose, it fell in an earthquake ages before the French ever got there.  When British archaeologists were excavating, they found a large carved stone between the forelegs, but couldn't identify it.  Turns out it was the Sphinx's beard which had probably fallen off around the same time as the nose.  But the Brits won't give it back and if you want to see it you have to visit

Best Christmas Gift Ever Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... S o, who do you think got an early Christmas/Hanukah present this year?  YES!  Doc Scale snagged this beauty (#1) out of Danny's bay and had it waxed and tuned up before you could say Jack Frost!  Danny had been working on it in secret, keeping it from prying eyes and finally gifted it to Eddie just in time for the holidays.  Great glass job and pinstripes by Davey and the Barahona crew.  Now we just need some good waves for the maiden voyage!  Yay, Doc! C lear skies this morning and 16 miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a brisk 54.1º and the water is holding at 63.3º.  High tide was at 5:29am +4.9' and low tide follows at 12:08pm +1.5'. It's a WSW swell out of 256º at 4.3' and it was 3' to 4' as the crew hit an unpredictable mysto spot that opened up for them... C hristiano is heading up north for his contest this weekend for the SLO CAL Open.  Look for the WSL Qualifying Series on

No Weapons On Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... W e decided that if we were going to Egypt, we'd decompress on our arrival on the Red Sea at a spot called Hurghada.  Hurghada is noted for their clear water (no the water is NOT red) and vibrant coral reefs.  Well those things are true and in fact there was this spur of reef (#1) right off of our hotel's beach.  We did head out to one of the offshore islands one day and managed to stray off our appointed beach, get yelled at by the other beach's Nazis and not get excited by the dolphins that came by.  It was like, "Yeah, dolphins."  The boat driver was cataleptic.  "These are wild dolphins!"  "Uh, yeah, wild dolphins." we said.  "How often do YOU see wild dolphins?"  He asked incredulously?  "Almost every day." We replied a little snarky.  "Where are you FROM?" he asked.  "California.  We invented dolphins.  Like Flipper!"  He looked a little crestfallen.  "Hey, you can have so

Tasty Camel Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O ne of the questions we always get when we travel is "Did you have anything interesting or weird to eat?"  This time Egypt served up it's best camel and Sancho and the Professor claimed it was every bit as good as your favorite filet Mignon!  It came with mushroom sauce, baked vegetables and 7 peas.  Everyone, including a few Egyptians we met, kept insisting we were putting them on, but I'm here to tell you it was one of the best meals we had on the trip! F ew scattered clouds this morning with 19miles visibility.  Winds were offshore by 1 to 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a pleasant 55.2º and the water is 63.3º.  Low tide was at 10:28am +2.8' and high tide is at 3:15pm +3.6'.  We have a WSW swell out of 250º at 3.3' and it was breaking close at 2' to 3' and not quite rideable. ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

There's A Memphis In Egypt Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W ell, we weren't too close to Memphis here in Giza as we skirted the Great Pyramid of Cheops on our way to the Nile.  As near as we could tell there isn't a bore on the Nile because the delta is so spread out that there isn't a spot where all of the incoming tide gathers and then goes up a central channel.  That's as near as we could tell.  That doesn't mean that somewhere along that stretch there isn't SOMETHING that resembles a bore.  We just didn't see it and we crossed the Nile at least a dozen times... A beautiful Monday morning on our way to the Holidays.  Partly cloudy skies and 15miles visibility.  Winds were light offshore 2 to 4kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air was a chilly 48.8º (Hey!  It's December!) and the water is holding at 63.0º.  Low tide was at 9:00am +3.2' and high tide will be at 1:42pm +3.9'.  It's a weak west swell out of 262º at 2.6' and it was a crunchy 2' to 3' and not
