As Far As Monuments Go Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co...

From the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre (c. 2575 - 2465 bce) and thought to depict his face on a lion's body.  It's carved from a single piece of the limestone bedrock and is 240 feet long and 66 feet high.  The Nile came right up to the feet of the statue in ancient times and there's a causeway that connects the Sphinx and the pyramid of Khafre (the second largest one).  Napoleon's soldiers did NOT shoot off his nose, it fell in an earthquake ages before the French ever got there.  When British archaeologists were excavating, they found a large carved stone between the forelegs, but couldn't identify it.  Turns out it was the Sphinx's beard which had probably fallen off around the same time as the nose.  But the Brits won't give it back and if you want to see it you have to visit the British Museum.   Most people were duly impressed and we heard this fellow say, "Dude, this is like the really true Sphinx!  Oh wait, that was us!

The surf is flat.  Like pool table flat.  50.1º in the air and 63.3º in the water.  It's pancake flat.  There's a 2.0' SSW swell out of 210º and it's flat as a dining room table.  High tide at 7:12am +6.3' and low tide at 2:33pm -0.8' and it managed to be as flat as the Bonneville Salt Flats.  Boris thought someone had put a pool cover over the ocean...

Some excellent performances last Friday in the South Bay Scholastic Surfing Association Kickoff Classic for the men's shortboard division.  RUHS advanced 11 surfers:

With any luck the contest will continue on Friday!
