Image
Lost Boys & Co... N o it's a real skip loader (#2).  Looks like a Tonka version however.  Do they still make Tonka Toys? M arco getting ready to head out (#3).  Join us tonight at Shade for some happy hour foolishness.  5:15pm is the reservation... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Thinking About Thursday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... L uis (#1) went to Brazil for a couple of weeks and when we asked him if it was for Carnival.  He reluctantly let on that he got an award.  Well it turns out that he was inducted into Brazil's Weightlifting Hall of fame and got the award from none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger!  Congratulations!  He also schooled us on the basics of the KETO diet and we're pretty sure that a KETO Burrito would be a big hit...  He also said that martinis (#2) were KETO acceptable! O vercast this morning with variable winds out of several directions.  The sea surface had a bit of a bump to it.  The air temp was 58.3 and the water is 60.6.  Low tide was at 9:33am +0.4' and high tide follows at 5:33pm +3.3'.  We have a SSW swell out of 193º at 2.0' and it was a small 1' to 2'. S hade Hotel for Happy Hour this week at 5:15...  Marco and Raquel will be joining us for the evening before they head back to Portugal... N ext week we'll be headed back to th

(#1) H azy sun this morning and 10 miles visibility.  Winds wee offshore by 5.5kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 58.1 and the water is 60.8, but we're not going to make a big deal about that.  The last time we commented on the water getting to 60, a gale blew through and it dropped to 55...  Low tide was at 8:16am +0.1' and high tide will be at 3:38pm +3.2'.  We have a west swell out of 263º at 2.3' and it was about half of that...  S'posed to be a bit bigger in the morning, so let's take a look and hold good thoughts... M ateus (#2) making the most of breakfast, both eating and wearing it!  Friday we'll be saying goodbye to the Leao's at Shade at 5:30 on the patio... ✠ "When the surf breaks, we'll fix it" The Professor!!

Putting The Cult In Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... O kay, we're going to move on from India and wing our way to Boise for a little celebration of LoLa's birthday and Easter Sunday.  But not before we give a big thank you to our guide and eventually friend in the sub-continent Neel Pradap.  Neel expertly shepherded us through what could have been a most chaotic and confusing 16 days.  We can't imagine India without him.  He wove history, culture, politics and religion together to make some sense of what we were seeing on our all too brief sojourn.  Should you ever entertain the notion of going to India, let us know and we'll put you in touch with Neel and his company... S ome good waves this morning with fluky, but light winds and smooth seas.  10 miles visibility and the air was 54 and the water is 58.1.  Low tide was at 7:12am -0.2' and high tide will be at 1:55pm +3.3'.  We have a west swell out of 262º at 3.0' and it was 3' to 4' with some nice peaks! Kathmandu, Kat Man Don't Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... A lmost every building in Kathmandu is undergoing reconstruction since the devastating 7.8 earthquake of April 2015.  Over 750,000 structures were destroyed, 9,000 people died and over 20,000 were injured.  Most people stayed outside for over four months until the aftershocks subsided.  This (#1) is the temple square and is undergoing extensive reconstruction.  There are before and after photos at most sites showing what was there and what was left... A s our more normal wind patterns return, we had 10 miles visibility under clear skies.  Winds were out of the SE by 3kts and the sea surface was smooth.  The air temperature was 53.9 and the water was 56.3, but felt almost 60 in the lineup.  High tide was at 8:29am +5.4' and low tide will be at 2:43pm -0.5'.  We have a SW swell out of 235º at 3.0', but it bumped a bit and it was a solid 4' with some good to great rollers working through the high tide!  Check it mañana... Well, Well It's Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... C all Lassie, we found the well (#1) but Timmy's nowhere to be seen...  One of the exciting things about wells in India and Nepal is that they really don't advertise that they're there.  Like we walked right up to the edge of this well and found ourselves wondering how many people fall into this abyss on a regular basis... W ind and tide are still playing games with us this week.  10 miles visibility this morning under hazy skies.  Winds wee onshore by 5 to 7kts and the sea surface was bumped.  The air temperature was 53.8 and the water is 56.3.  High tide was at 7:37am +5.3' and low tide will be at 2:08pm -0.6'.  We have a WSW swell out of 252º at 3.0', but the tide and wind knocked it down all morning... (#2 & #3) T his was absolutely intriguing!  This is a step well and is probably almost a hundred yards across and at least that deep.  It looked like an Escher drawing in real life!  During the monsoon season it fills to about the thi

Spiritual, Religious Or Holy Monday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... I ndia and Nepal just might lead the world as a destination for holy-persons...  In photo #1 we see a "Sky Clad" a holy man who refuses the accoutrements of the world, including clothes.  Clad only in flowers and ashes rubbed on his body, he really doesn't beg for alms, but will extend his hand if you take his picture.  In return he gives you a couple of sweets from a bowl in front of him... W indy again this morning!  Boo!  10 miles visibility and cloudy skies.  Winds were 5 to 7kts on shore and the sea surface was bumpy.  The air temperature was 53.3 and the water is 55.9 and can start warmi9ng up again whenever it wants.  High tide was at 6:41am +5.1' and low tide will be at 1:27pm -0.6'.  We have a SW swell out of 227º at 2.3' and it was a weak 2' and blown out... T his monk sits in front of a large bell with Buddhist inscriptions (#2).  The Indian flag has three colors representing the three main religions:  orange for Buddhists,

On The Banks Of The Ganges Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... T he Ganges is the holiest river in India.  Like Mecca for Muslims and Jerusalem for Jews, it is a destination for devout followers of the Hindu religion.  Many believe that by coming to the banks of the Ganges at Varanasi they can be purified and skip a few steps in their journey to Nirvana.  Many people who are old and infirm come here to die and in a country where there are 1.2 billion people, that ends up being a considerable number.  We took a boat out into the river (#1) at sunset and watched the ritual bathing, purification and eventual cremation from the water...  T oo windy this morning, but 10 miles visibility under a hazy sun.  The air temp was 53.6 and the water has taken a hit and is down to 56.8.  Low tide at 10:41am +0.1' and high tide follows at 6:17pm +3.4'.  We have a west swell out of 265º at 5.2' and it was a rough 4' to 6' and pretty disorganized...  Maybe mañana... Thursday As A Concept Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... H ere (#1) we have an example of an Hindu calendar.  That first box with the figure that looks like a "9" is the 14th of April.  Things go quickly downhill from there...  Approximately every 15 days, there is a holiday, so "9t" or May 1st requires some celebration.  Then, of course, every Saturday is special, so they are shown in red (as they should be.)  In the four corners we have your horoscopes, whatever they may be.  You can be sure yours is most auspicious, just look... T he wind subsided enough this morning to give us a window for about an hour.  Hazy sun and 10 miles visibility.  Winds were out of the NE by 2 to 3kts and the sea surface had a bit of roll to it.  The air temp was 53.7 and the water is 57.2.  If the wind holds off, it should warm a bit more for the weekend.  Low tide at 9:15am +0.3' and high tide follows at 5:00pm +3.0'.  We have a building swell from the west 264º at 4.3' and it was 3' to 5' with some

A Taj Mahal Wednesday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... W ord association:  India.  Taj Mahal?  Correct!  So that's one of the few things we know for sure about India.  Did we go and check it out?  Well, of course we did.  T he first thing we realized is that it's a lot bigger than we imagined.  If you zoom in on #1 you'll see the people walking around the base.  It's really majestic.  Built as a mausoleum by Shah Jahan in the mid 1600's for the rulers beloved wife, they took pains to make it look a bit mosque-like to not incur the wrath of the Muslims.  In fact the west gate is still a mosque and the whole place is closed on Friday's for Muslim services, even though none are held in the Taj (after you've been there all morning you can call it the "Taj" for short.) itself... M ore wind this morning, but now mostly from the north, 13 to 15kts.  The sea surface was chopped up and the sky was mostly clear.  The air temperature was 57.5 and the water is 58.1.  Low tide was at 7:53am

Lost Boys & Co... F or five thousand years-plus, they've been using donkeys to get around (#1) why change now?  Especially when the biggest obstacle you might encounter is a cow, at least the donkey understands cow mentality...  They don't agree with it, they just understand it... L ike the sign says, "We deliver any load, any size." (#2)  O ne word, "wind."  Started on-shore and got stronger.  The air temperature was 57.3 and the water is 59.7.  Low tide 6:48am +0.2' and high tide was at 1:10pm +3.2'.  We have a wild west swell out of 268º at 6.9' and it was 4' to 8' and pretty tumultuous... T hen there's the "Bicycle Rickshaw." (#3)  Especially in Delhi these are a popular means of transportation.  Motorized tuk-tuks are faster and can carry up to 5 or 6 people, but for the experience, bicycles are the way to go.  To demonstrate how crowded things get, we were in our own rickshaw going the other way down this lane when

Hardhat Monday Surf & Culture Report

Lost Boys & Co... On a personal note I have to admit that I'm a sucker for the use of bamboo in construction.  Of course this has it's genesis in the Tiki Bar, but has grown to embrace the use of bamboo in all manner of building.  #1 demonstrates how it is often employed as scaffolding (or a birdcage, not exactly sure.)  In some ways, stronger than steel of the same size we saw it in use throughout India and Nepal... Hazy sun this morning with 5 miles visibility.  Winds were calm and the sea surface had a bit of roll to it.  The air temperature was 54.9 and the water is 61.0.  Low tide was at 5:57am +0.1' and high tide will be at 12:09pm +3.6'.  There's a WSW swell out of 257º at 4.3' and it was a fun 3' to 5'... This Kathmandu construction site (#2) employs a couple of techniques rarely seen here in the US.  The first is the mixing of concrete in the form itself.  Usually there's a mixer and then the wet concrete is pumped into the form.  In thi

India Telecom Friday Surf & Culture Report

Image
Lost Boys & Co... H ave you gotten a call from one of those call centers in India lately?  Paver and the Professor had thought they had found the nexus of all Indian telecom when they found this bundle of wire (#1) just blocks from their digs in New Delhi, but NO!  Most telephone poles in India and Nepal look like this!  When they need new wire, they just string up a new one and leave the old one there...  Since no one knows what's what, they have to put in new wire every time... H appy Birthday to Jetsky!  Today's the day, but we could celebrate all weekend! D espite the ugly rumors, there was surf this morning!  A beautiful morning with partly cloudy skies and 10 miles visibility.  No wind and smooth seas, with the air at 51.7 and the water at 59.5.  High tide was at 10:16am +4.6' and low tide is at 4:14pm +0.7'.  We have a SSW swell out of 205º at 2.6' and it was a fun high tide 2' to 3'. W e thought we were getting warmer when we found all this cabl
